Newsweek has put together a list of 50 books whose themes are very relevant to today's news and times.

Fifty Books For Our Times

Very interesting list of books; a departure from the usual list of "Must Reads" that often includes books (*cough Ulysses *cough) that many of us will never read.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I've only read one of the books on the list, and I've already forgotten which one it is.

message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Much to my shock I've read seven of those books. Usually I'm zero for whatever on recommended book lists.

message 4: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) I've only read 5 of them.
it's an interesting list, a curious mix.

message 5: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Thanks Gus for the list!

I found the next non-fiction book I want to present to book club - PRISONER OF THE STATE by Zhao Ziyang

message 6: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments A very interesting list, and I've read NONE of them. *shamed* Well, I saw Persepolis, does that count?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've read five of them, too. I'm interested in the book about Oppenheimer, American Prometheus The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, that sounds fascinating!

I've gotten more and more interested in nonfiction as I've gotten older. I think I must be needing less escapism than I used to.

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've only read a few of those...interesting list. I see my "to read" growing again in the near future. Sigh.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I've added 4 of those books to my list. I've also read a few of them, Delillo's White Noise among the standouts.

message 10: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Sarah, my to-read list is just a never-ending mess. Even that "move to the top" feature is pointless now.

message 11: by Kemper (new)

Kemper I've been making an effort to read some 'liter-a-ture' lately and finished a couple of books like Blood Meridian and Confederacy of Dunces. And what do I get for my trouble? A new list with only one book I've read on it. Stupid Newsweek. I'm subscribing to Time now......

message 12: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Nah, if it got you reading A Confederacy of Dunces, it was worth it!

:)

message 13: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 158 comments I read Things Fall Apart in middle school I believe...I really dont remember anything about it. Thats the only one on the list that I've read though.

I've actually read more from that list than I'd expected. I found Underworld at a garage sale recently, so as soon as I recover from thesis writing I'll get on that.

message 15: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) I've only read 4 of them.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Sally, Underworld is enthralling. Yes, it's a big book, but its' focus is so sharp, and Delillo has never written anything as epic as this.

message 17: by Randy (new)

Randy I started The Dark is Rising last night...I forget how many books I'm currently reading but they are all over the house and some on my desk at work! No doubt it is mainly the fault of GR.

message 18: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) I've read Year of Wonders, Things Fall Apart, and Leaves of Grass. Dang.

message 19: by Randy (new)

Randy I've read vast parts of Leaves of Grass, but probably not the whole shebang...is that word offensive, by the way?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Vast? Nah, it's fine, Randy.

message 21: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Vast?

message 22: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments :D

message 23: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Ricky Martin doesn't think so.

message 24: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Shebang?

Offensive?

message 26: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments I have read one on the list. I am a dolt.

I did find a book at the library today. A nice easy novel by John Sandford who I for fun stories. I also made a short list of books to get soon:

Ride Of A Lifetime - Teutul
The Lottery Wars - (forgot to write down author)
Miracle Ball - Biegel
American Buffalo - Rinella

message 27: by Randy (new)

In that case:

*unwithers*

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Frankenstein and Persepolis are two of the five I've read, Ko. And The Dark Is Rising, Predictably Irrational, and, hmm, I thought I'd read five, but no... only four.

Shouldn't some teen fiction be on here, too?

message 32: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i am ok with being a very random reader who includes some drivel (ok, lots of drivel) as i read for enjoyment, very seldom for self improvement or enlightenment
