Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Roz, Anne's Crime will be on Card #2, but Janice should finish her Crime for Card #1 to make the Row. There's also the Column once Sam and Casceil finish their books.

message 502: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4536 comments Oh rats, I missed that. Anyway it's still better to put me in Non-Fiction. Everyone is doing so well. I've only done 3, which is good for me.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Anne, let's plug for you in Crime on Card #2. I've got Me, Sam, Kat, and Annette down for Fantasy, Paranormal, Contemporary, and Myth/Fable. If you do Crime, I can read SciFi, Romance, or Non-fiction for the row or Historical Fiction or Biography for the Column. I'm sure we can finish at least 2 strings on that card with the new rules.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Roz wrote: "If someone can read another culture to replace Mariab, we have the bottom row too."

Unfortunately, no player other than Mariab is able to read that last slot in Culture. I really wish she'd chime in and let us know if she still plans to read. I checked the member list, and she hasn't posted to the group since the first week of the month.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Theresa, no worries from me. I worked for the government for 25 years - I'm used to being told what to do. =) And I might be able to squeeze another book in, too since I can read all day since I'm retired. Only thing I have to do is go to the DMV Friday to get my car tags renewed -- I'll bring a book along with me.

message 506: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I am a little over 100 pages from the end of my Steampunk book, so let me know what to read next.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Casceil, Anne's reading Crime, so we can build a string on that. Would you rather read Sci fi, Non-fiction, Action/Advenure, Historical Fiction, or Biography? If you pick one of those, I'll pick another on the row or column, and I'm sure we can get another player or two to finish the string.

message 508: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Theresa, I went to Mariab's profile page. She hasn't posted or rated a book on GR since Feb. 6th - I honestly don't think she's been on Goodreads, since.

message 509: by Annette (new)

Annette Olsen | 205 comments I will finish my steampunk book sometime tonight. I will start my myth/fable for card #2 tonight or in the morning. I don't have anything going for the next couple of days so I am definitely on track for a 6th book. Just let me know what you want me to read!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Anne (Booklady) wrote: "Theresa, I went to Mariab's profile page. She hasn't posted or rated a book on GR since Feb. 6th - I honestly don't think she's been on Goodreads, since."

I found the same.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Oh well, Theresa. I'm still having fun and still doing the SRC - no complaints from me. =)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Annette and Casceil, if one of you can do SciFi and the other Non-Fiction, we can get our 2nd string on Card #2. Here's what I have for that one so far:

String #1:
Fantasy - Theresa
Paranormal - Sam
Contemporary - Kat
Myth/Fable - Annette

String #2:
SciFi - Annette or Casceil
Romance - Theresa
Non-Fiction - Annette or Casceil
Crime - Anne

message 513: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I would rather read Sci-Fi than non-fiction.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments As for myself, I finished The Firebird, my 5th and last book for Card #1, filling a slot in the Paranormal genre. I'm now listening to Stardust by Neil Gaiman for Fantasy on Card #2. After that I'll listen to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for Romance or Historical Fiction.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Casceil wrote: "I would rather read Sci-Fi than non-fiction."

Okay, Casceil. I'll put you down for Sci Fi and Annette for Non-fiction.

I hope Mariab is okay and that nothing serious is keeping her away.

Janice, I sent message to both Mariab and Joe a short time ago. Hopefully we'll hear back soon.

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Thanks for doing that Theresa. I hope they're both okay. They're missing out on a great party.

I need advice on what 2 books I'm treating myself, any suggestions? I read Thrillers a lot.

May I warm up? La, la, la, lalalal la. Got to get these ol' vocal chords primed for some virtual singing. :)

I took a peek at your TBR, and you have The Bat and The Keeper of Lost Causes listed. If you use your to-read shelf as a wishlist, I'd recommend that you get those.

message 521: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Thanks Janice. I read The Keeper of Lost Causes a couple of years ago and my sister in law sent me The Bat. My TBR Shelf lists the books I own that I want to read before I die - both hard copies and digital. I guess I should create a "wishlist" shelf, eh?

Have you read Before I Go To Sleepby S.J. Watson? I really enjoyed it.

That's how I use my TBR shelf too. So back to the drawing board...

Thunderhead
The Yard (more a mystery than a thriller)

How about:

Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Twelve Years a Slave would work. it's rather short and only 99 cents in the Kindle version.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Team Gold has been busy and has 5 strings completed - Top Row, Far Left and Right Columns, and both Diagonals.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I just posted our newest chart with 5 completed strings. I've also posted the current plan for Chart #2, which is definitely open to changes. Here's how I find our players:

Ann - committed to 2, both completed. Is there any chance you could read a short Fantasy or Non-Fiction to help complete strings?
Anne - finished Card #1 and reading Crime for Card #2
Annette - finished Card #1 and will be reading Myth/Fable and Non-Fiction for Card #2
Casceil - finished Card #1 and will be reading SciFi for Card #2.
Erin - finished 2 and still has a commitment to Steampunk on Card #1
Esther - Finished Card #1. We need to set her up on Card #2
Janice - finished 2 and is still committed to Crime and Mystery on Card #1
Joe - Committed to Non-Fiction and Biography but has not reported in since the Toppler began. I sent a message last night but have not heard back.
Kat - finished Card #1 and will be reading Contemporary for Card #2
Kirila - completed her commitment for 2 books on Card #1 and will not be able to read more.
Mariab - Committed to Non-Fiction, Cultural, and Fantasy but has not reported in since the Toppler began. I sent a message last night but have not heard back.
Roz - expects to finish her 3rd book today. It's slotted for Science/Nature but may be moved to Non-Fiction.
Sam - has finished 3 and is committed to Horror and Myth/Fable on Card #1, then will read Paranormal for Card #2
Theresa (me) - finished Card #1, am reading Fantasy and Romance for Card #2, and should be able to fit in one more.

If anyone would like to change up Card #2, please let me know. I realized when writiing this up that we hadn't set up a slot for Esther, so we have some planning yet to do.

I have to get to work, so I'll check in again this evening.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments One other note, if you haven't been following the main Toppler thread, Jaxnsmom also posted that in addition to strings, there will be points for orphaned slots that have been read but are not in completed strings. All those yellow slots won't go for naught.

message 531: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments I didn't get much reading done yesterday - too many distractions. But I'll make up for it today and tomorrow!

message 532: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I am going to read Triplanetary for science fiction. it looks like a fast read, so I may be able to do one more book for card 2.

Esther (nyctale) | 5195 comments Hi,

My hotel wifi and goodreads do not get along.

I am done with work so i am bundling up for a walk on the beach. I am bring hearphones and my biography. I am pushing just as we have not heard from Joe and we may need it.

I started death by Darjeeling last night that can be used for crime or mystery.

Let me know what i can read and i can surely find something at a bookstore tomorrow am on my way to the airport. I also plan to do nothing on saturday morning so i can do a last minute sprint.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Esther, we can certainly set up a string on page 2 so you can have Mystery.

Ann, since tomorrow's your birthday, why don't you pick the genre you want, and we'll make it work. Your options are: Classic, Fantasy, Horror, Science/Nature, Mystery, Dystopian, YA, Short Stories, Contemporaray, Steampunk, Cultural, Humor, or Myth/Fable.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Annette wrote: "Theresa, I will be starting my non fiction book tonight. I chose Disposable Income A True Story of Sex, Greed and Im-purr-fect Murder"

Annette, I hope you haven't started that book yet. The rules say you must read books with at least 175 pages, and that only has 171. Do you have another non-fiction, or perhaps a Romance you could read? I can swap slots with you if that helps.

Thanks Theresa. I had just noticed the page thing and have been frantically searching for a new book for the last half hour. Drat!! I hate to ask you to switch. I will keep looking. It's not like the world doesn't have plenty of books in it to choose from.

message 541: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5195 comments having a couple of hour of airport and a flight tomorrow and my lazy saturday morning, I may be able to do a 2nd book on card #2.
What genre would be best?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Esther, tomorrow is Anne's birthday, so when she said she will finish Crime on Card #2 and could read another, I suggested she choose from the genres available to her and we'd try to make a string for it. How soon do you need to decide?

FYI, the options available to you (assuming the book you're reading is Crime) would be: Fantasy, Horror, Suspense/Thriller, Non-fiction, Crime, YA, Historical Fiction, Culture, Myth/Fable, and Memoir.

Your birthday wish is granted! We'll put you in Mystery and do our best to make it a string.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Mariab, it's so good to hear that you were able to read with us. I am sorry about your health problem and hope it's resolved.

Can you please be sure to post your finishes in the "Reporting Only - Team Gold" thread as well? That's the "official" notice spot for us.

Be sure, too, to post when you finish Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture

message 547: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5195 comments I am online until tomorrow morning. Then It will have to wait until I am home. With mystery taking 3 threads and the 5 Iread for the first card, my choices are getting limited. :)

It might come to HF, YA, fantasy or cultural... just out of the blue... as I expect to vanish, what genre would The Ghost Bride fit in, if any?

Ok... Typed this 3 times... I am giving up. this hotel's wifi hates goodreads. every site but this one seems fine...

I was having similar problems on my home internet last night. My computer was showing that the speed was low, but sites that usually give me problems were zipping right along while I couldn't even got onto GR.
