Under- appreciated novels discussion

If any of you have read this book I think it is amazing as a stand alone and I cant really figure out why they made a second one? They just juice ut for all its worth I guess. What did you think of this novel? I loved the characters and their reactions to what happens. It was interesting because it was a fantasy and a mystery
