Martin Hill (martinroyhill) | 125 comments Nearly a month to the day after the 9/11 attacks, American Airlines Flight 587 crashed while taking off from JFK Airport in New York. The NTSB determined the crash was due to pilot error, and so it stands today.

But.....

A couple years later I was attending a medical conference for special operations (SOF) medical personnel. I was listening to a lecture on the history of terrorism given by an Israeli special ops doctor. He listed and discussed a number of incidents, and then declared that the crash of Flight 587 was due to a terrorist attack. Well, that certainly perked me up and I looked around at the others in the audience. I saw a lot of heads going up and down in agreement.

As soon as the lecture was over, I rushed upstairs to my hotel room and Googled the crash. Sure enough, I came up with foreign news reports saying that Canadian and Israeli intelligence services had determine that the flight was brought down by an Al Qaeda shoe bomb. Witnesses to the crash say they saw an explosion occur above the wing in the passenger compartment, then the wing caught fire and an engine fell off, which is indicative of a shoe bomb. US government explanations at the time were that the crash was caused by pilot error, mechanical failure, or both. They finally settled on pilot error.

On returning to my office I mentioned the Israeli doc’s comments, but no one would believe it. (I work for the military.) They all dismissed the idea the government was hiding a terrorist attack. Why would they do such a thing?

Well, here are some reasons I came up with:

• The crash occurred shortly after commercial flights had resumed after the 9/11 attacks. The airlines were facing bankruptcy. Another terrorist attack would have grounded them again and bankrupt them.
• The American airline industry might never have regained the trust of travelers after a second successful attack.
• At the time of the crash, the Bush administration was facing allegations that it had received warnings about an impending terrorist attack before 9/11 and did nothing about it. (We now know those allegations were true.) Another successful attack would have destroyed the Bush administration.

Interestingly, the original news stories I initially found on the crash appear to no longer be available. Today, Google search only turns up conspiracy web sites. I might disregard intelligence from Israel saying the crash was an Al Qaeda attack; they have their own agenda. But I lean toward believing a report from Canadian intelligence.

What do you think?

James Morcan | 11380 comments Given that it seems everything and anything has been blamed on AL Q, I can't imagine them hiding an actual terrorist attack.

James Morcan | 11380 comments Not knowing much about this event, I emailed my friend and British intelligence veteran John Banks - an Ex-Paratrooper and Pathfinder who worked for the British government in counter terrorism with Special Branch and SO15. He was involved with the CIA in three counter terrorism operations in Africa, in addition to many other clandestine operations (for more info on John check out this video interview where he discusses false flag terrorism -- https://www.goodreads.com/videos/8714...)

This was John's reply (which I'm posting after getting his permission to post it here in the group):

"Re flight 587.
You are 100% correct! If it had been AlQ they would have released statements.

The fact that the wreckage showed no signs of explosive traces internally as a bomb would leave, negates a bomb.

The over use of the rudder to counter the turbulence from the 747 that was just in front of it causing the problems is far more logical.

The fact that it was an Israeli who made first suggestions of a bomb is also like listening to the disinformation news cast.

So a prisoner already in custody gave a story for a plea bargain, still not conclusive

Every nut in the world who wants to make a statement now claims to be either AlQ or ISIS. Paris, other cities in France, Sydney, Tunisia and so on, ISIS are quite happy because it gives them publicity!

Reality is probably that it is lone attacks by people who claim to belong to these groups."

Very interesting!

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Plane crashes are very moving to me personally. I don't care about 'mysteries'; just the sheer fact of them happening is so disturbing to me.

I mist up when reading about them, and can be brought to near-weeping when viewing any kind of documentary. Totally deplore and despise any kind of trivializing of these horrible tragedies. Plane crashes are the most shocking trespass possible between humans and machinery. Sickening waste. Godamnit. Stupid mechanization and industrialization of life, makes me livid. So pointless.

Anyway. The worst crashes..to me, are these:

The two 747s smashing into each other in Tenerife because of an impatient pilot.
The Concord.
The crash in the Potomac River in the ice.
The Sioux City DC10 crash (most horrible)
The AirFrance jet leaving Brazil, (downed in the Atlantic because of a faulty air-speed indicator. Shocking).

Most of the 'more famous' ones I leave off this list. Not sure why. Perhaps its just that these which I've cited had so much 'normality', seemingly so 'innocuous'.

ValuJet/Everglades; the gruesome Flight 800; one which took out a whole neighborhood in the Rockaways..these all seem 'too bizarre' to relate to.

Some of them lead to improvement: like the cabin top that blew off the 747 coming back from Hawaii...still..I loathe the 'cheapening' of human life because some hungover flunky comes into a hangar one morning and fumbles his checklist. Bam! 300 people die. Its just grotesque.

Good movie: Cliff Robertson in 'The Pilot'.
And (of course) Burt Lancaster and Van Heflin in 'Airport'. You just can't beat that effin' movie, even to this day.
