RandomAnthony | 14536 comments http://www.smh.com.au/national/towns-...

I read today that a town in Australia is considering banning the sale of bottled water because of plastic pollution, etc. I also heard that many cities, etc. are banning the use of govt. funds for bottled water.

What do you think? I mean, it's hard to rationalize banning bottled water when you can buy, you know, cigarettes or whatever. I also don't think people carry water bottles constantly and there are days, here and there, when I buy bottled water. Although I'm usually pissed at myself for forgetting my water bottle, but that's because I feel like a jackass paying three bucks for water.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It does seem extreme, when everyone buys big bottles of pop without anyone getting upset. Same bottles, right?
I can see an agency or a business deciding not to buy it for their employees, but not a public ban. I think a return bottle deposit would be better received.

I'm not a fan of bottled water myself, because it tastes funny.

Usako (bbmeltdown) Bottle water comes in handy in war ravage and natural disaster areas. I know for my home we stock bottle water in case of a situation and use it often.

I did see an informercial about the plastic for water. Odd, *nods at Jackie* why they never mentioned soda, gatorade, etc. Solely water was mentioned. And instead buy this metal thermas for your water.

And we do recycle.

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments BunWat explained my stance pretty well.

Aside from the questionable ethics of capitalizing on something as essential as water, I think we should be going easy on the concept of "disposable," period. Like napkins? And utensils for sure. Maybe a hassle to clean, but it's not like we've got an infinite supply.

I think maybe it's less so for sodas and such because you can't exactly brita filter those out of the tap.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments True, but the bottles are just as non-biodegradable as water bottles. And you CAN get soda in cans instead, which recycle more easily than plastic.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I like the fancy Aranciata and Limonata by SanPelligrino, which comes in these cute little bottles, which are like half the size of a soda can. Cute!

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Mobile has very tasty water, so I just recycle my own plastic bottles w/tap water.

What's NYC water like, anyone?

message 8: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments NYC water is disgusting, Mindy. Chlorine can only cover up so much, you know?

Jackie: Limonata is awesome.

Everyone else: I drink well water exclusively. The water from my well is unbelievably cold/clean.

As for bottled water, I certainly like Evian.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

We probably have 10 aluminum water bottles around here, and our water comes out of a well, so the taste just doesn't get any better. We have water bottles for convenience sometimes, but prefer our water instead.

message 10: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OK, so what should I do in NYC? If it's that bad would a filter make a difference or do I need to go w/bottles?

message 11: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Get one of those Brita filters. Also, try and get water that comes in glass bottles.

message 12: by Matthieu (last edited Jun 28, 2017 03:18PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments My cousin uses a Brita filter and absolutely depends on it. West Village, represent.

message 13: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Word.

:)

message 14: by Lori (new)

Lori Actually, NY water is rated one of the best, Mindy. But a Brita filter is always a good thing.

Funny this should come up because just the other day there was an article about how bottled water rated against city tap water and guess which one won? Hands down city water. Most of the bottled water is a complete rip off.

Still, I can't stand the smell of the chlorine coming out of my faucet, and if I can smell it, then what's in there I can't smell. Ewwww. So I finally broke down and bought a filtration system.
For those who reuse your plastic store-bought bottled water, I used to do that but then found out that over time the plastic does start breaking down and is actually not good for you. Plus plastic is a bit porous, so the outside environment also seeps in and that's why the water doesn't taste as good. So once your bottle becomes a bit sticky by the spout, instead of washing it, just toss it.

I ended up buying some Kleen Kanteens, and I love them!

message 15: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments You're wrong, Lori. Also, I think Seattle's water is quite different...

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori Well, Matt, it has been 19 years since I've lived there, so things could very well have changed. Also much depends on your pipes, and the condition of the main pipes as well. We did have copper in our loft, but I think that the water mains are seriously degraded and very very old so they must be iron still.

message 17: by Lori (last edited Jul 10, 2009 05:24PM) (new)

Lori Heheheh, I got curious so I looked up ratings. NY is recently "endangered"!

And an article in the ongoing saga of tap vs bottle.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments 20 years ago i NEVA imagined or remotely thought i would be PAYING for water.

i do drink the big 1 liter flavored carbonated waters as i hate reg water but know i need to drink more

message 19: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Berkeley tap is not... terrible? But I'll Brita everything just to be safe.

At home, we have filtered tap, which is the cleanest water I've ever tasted.

I used to do Fiji and Evian until I became a poor student and the economy went down the drain. : / Also, since starting college, I've learned that imported water is not environmentally friendly.

message 20: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Lori: NYC water has since become absolutely awful.

N.: Try Paly tap. I can only say nice things about Paly tap... even though we had a well...

Bun: Pellegrino is wonderful. Criminally overpriced, but wonderful.

message 21: by Nuri (last edited Jul 10, 2009 09:54PM) (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Voss was my occasional indulgence. Not anymore....

I know it tastes cleaner because I know how ridiculously expensive it is (and because it comes in those cool bottles), but that never stopped me from liking it back when I was even more obnoxiously bourgie than I am today.

Matt: haha, yes, I'll train all the way to Paly to knock on a random home and ask for some tap water.
: )

But I'll make a note to taste if I ever manage to drag myself to Stanford.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm lucky to have good tap water, but I'm with Kevin, I'm not fond of drinking water.

So I get, not the Aranciata, but the just plain fizzy San Pellegrino 12-pack of green glass bottles from Costco. Cold carbonated water over ice in the summer is GREAT!

message 23: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments I love iced carbonated water with lemon. Nothing better on a hot day.

Voss bottles are awesome.

message 24: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Bunny I'm 100% on the bus with you. Bottled water pisses me off!! They sell it in those tiny little bottles so you have to go through like 5 a day. I want to drink it out of the tap but it tastes terrible here! Of course you can't ban plastic water bottles, free country and all, but it still really pisses me off. I also have several water bottles, one of which is always lost. I only like soda out of cans. It tastes completely different in a bottle.

I'm from St. Louis and that's the best tap water I've ever tasted. I was there for a visit last month and I got such a kick out of filling my bottle straight from the tap. I swear it tasted even better then store-bought.

message 25: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments ok, here is my grind with it all:

how is it that suddenly in the last 10 years or so everyone got so dang thirsty??? we used to occasionally get a drink of water from the tap, a drinking fountain or a hose out by the garden. NOW people not only buy water in bottles, they carry it everywhere. everywhere i tell ya. how bout those totally LAME fanny pack attachments where you can holster bottles of water? (if you do this i am not talking about you) we hand bottles of water out at church on sunday mornings and our service lasts 59 minutes. FIFTY-NINE MINUTES. "help me....please...i am dehydrated....feeling faint....i haven't had a drink for FIFTY-NINE MINUTES !!!"

PEOPLE TRAVELED THE FLIPPIN' OREGON TRAIL WITH LESS WATER THAN WE TAKE TO THE MALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 26: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments btw - did my liberal use of caps and extraneous punctuation fully express my thoughts on this ?

message 27: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Here's my theory: The more you drink the thirstier you are. I used to never drink water. Then everyone started saying how great it was for you so I started drinking a lot. Then I HAD to drink constantly or I'd get terribly thirsty. It was quite a pain because my day was ruined if I forgot my water bottle. So I weaned myself off of it and now I'm back to normal. (I didn't notice any health effects either way.)
Evidence: The first time I visited CO I smoked a pack a day and only drank soda. I was warned to drink water because of the dryness/elevation and I did. I felt GREAT! I even went jogging because I had so much energy and felt so light. The next time I visited CO was during my water drinking stint. I had quit smoking and started eating well and exercising. I felt awful the whole time I was there. Nauseated, thirsty beyond belief, dizzy, ect. I had upped my water intake again for dryness/elevation but it didn't help a bit. I think the more you're used to getting the more you need. Therefor, it's pointless to drink a lot of water.
(my husband has this same theory for lotion and chapstick.)

message 28: by Lori (new)

Lori You know Gretchen, that's absolutely true - the more we drink, the thirstier we are. I've been through that myself. But it's either or for me, I tend to dehydrate myself or else drown! If I'm going anywhere, I don't want to drink because, well, since child birthin my bladder just can't hold it in like it used to.

The people who have those fanny pack thingies are the ones who are probably disgustingly healthy and active, heh.

message 29: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I didn't know that you could actually kill yourself by drinkin' too much water until a friend of mine told me about her mom-in-law who did. Freaky!

message 30: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wasn't there some woman who drank too much water and died while trying to win some radio Wii contest?

message 31: by Matthieu (new)

message 32: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Yeah, I think it's called hyperhydration. My friend's mom-in-law did it on purpose. She was mentally ill.

message 45: by Randy (new)

Randy Most all water is polluted unless it comes from under a large glacier. You should filter it in a quality stainless steel filter at home. I use a Big Berkey made by British Berkefeld...it removes bacteria, chlorine and with the correct filter floride/florine and other heavy metals.

Since I live in Arkansas I'll plug glass bottles and Mountain Valley water from Hot Springs...recycle please.

Plastic and aluminum also degrade/pollute water so the key is not to keep it there long and or let it get hot.

This is super late, I'm aware, but I hate being out of the loop on these fun conversations! The tap water in my town is freakishly delicious, and even better down in Boulder where they have thier own glacier for a water source.

The KY water I've been filling up my Sigg bottle (which, yes, I carry everywhere with me *thumbs nose*) is not BAD, per se, but it's not delish.

message 47: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I've found that I learn to love the water wherever I live after a certain period of time. I love coming home and getting a nice big cold glass of filtered water from the spigot on the refrigerator door.

message 48: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 158 comments ok...so I guess that I am pretty much alone here...but I buy bottled water. I bring one to work every day and when it is gone I will fill it up w/ water from the water cooler here. I do agree that it is a waste of money to buy water...but for whatever reason I do it anyway

message 49: by Kevin (last edited Jul 14, 2009 12:15PM) (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i only buy water to bathe in (usually something glacier from a mountain stream)

message 50: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I remember something like that... Wasn't that Demi Moore? (Although I'm sure plenty of others do it, too.)
