Comparisons to Sebastian Faulk's Birdsong

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you avid readers can help me out.
For a piece of coursework I need to find a piece of English literature (so this can be a poem/play/novel etc. but has to be originally written in English) to compare to the novel by Sebastian Faulks, Birdsong.
I'm on the hunt for something less obvious than comparing it to something directly associated with WW1, like Sasoon's memoirs. I was thinking more along the lines of looking at the passion between Isabelle and Stephen, or the notion of heroism? Or, even more specifically, something that has the motif of water/the human body/heat.
If you could give me some suggestions I would be so grateful, thank you!

Wow thats a hard one. Birdsong is one of my all time favourite books, why don't you look at other war love stories as a comparison?
I would also say that Atonement could be a great comparison
