Shay (shaylyn318) | 57 comments What simple things have been ruined for you after reading a horror book?

I read The Ruins recently. Soon after I finished my husband, the kids and I went to this restaurant that has an old covered bridge next to it. It is closed to vehicles but you can still walk through it. Right at the entrance were some vines covering a rock. I was like ahh stay away from the vines. My husband went and stood right on them and acted like they were pulling him away. As he stepped off I told him good job you have doomed us all. Then he said it's already started and pointed behind me where more vines were around a telephone pole.

Now I am reading NOS4A2 and I think Christmas will forever be ruined. LOL. Christmas music will never be the same. That and old cars. We love going to car shows and we have an old car now that my husband plans to restore. Plus the covered bridge, which I never doubted that every one of them is haunted. I've read enough stories about them too.

Ashley Good topic! I can't really think of anything, though. Old houses, maybe. :)

Jenn (ace-geek) No, I feel the opposite. I think it would be fun to be in a situation that reminded you of a horror book, since the actual danger couldn't possibly be there in real life.

Shay (shaylyn318) | 57 comments Good one Alice. Especially since it could really happen. Did you hear about the shark attacks on the Carolina shore this year? Shark attacks within hours of each other over the course of a week or two.

Adrian, you just have to go and ruin the fun huh? haha I am not actually afraid of these items I just like to joke about them with my family. Like telling my husband we have to get rid of our old car now. Telling my kids no more Christmas music. They know I'm not serious.

I love how authors can take innocent things and put such a twist on them.

Randy Harmelink | 1639 comments Don't they claim that more people are killed by coconuts falling from trees than by sharks each year?

Randy Harmelink | 1639 comments And now sharks are downgraded again:

Shane McClane | 23 comments I'll agree with Jaws. I live a few steps away from the beach but luckily its fresh water. But then again who knows whats down there...

Sharks have been found alive and well in freshwater. Enjoy your next dip in the creek.

T.W. Smith (twsmith) Every time I have a cold or the flu, I think of "The Stand." I always imagined King had a really bad one when he started writing it.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 957 comments I have to agree with Jaws. I know statistics and all, have read articles on the chances, but it's just the ocean...I love looking at it and being beside it, but every time you step in that way you can't see everything in there with you, near you, and are making yourself vulnerable. Jellyfish especially at the shoreline *shudder*

But I blame the movie more the book, didn't pick up the book till later

Randy Harmelink | 1639 comments What scares me more than sharks are the little parasites that can get into the body via any little opening. I recall reading about a family vacationing in Laughlin, Nevada. They swam in the Colorado river and the kid got a parasite through his nose or mouth that rested in the brains, and...

Ah, here is one article related to the brain-eating amoeba:

You're right. It is creepy but at the same time lovely to kinda live something you read in a book. I read NOS4a2 and I just bought The ruins; you made me even more curious to read it now :D

Yeah there's scary bacteria in water, especially that gets on contact lenses and breeds there and slowly eats the eye. That's why it's definitely important to swim with contacts. Read a few articles on it scary stuff
