Villette

"Villette! Villette! Have you read it?" exclaimed George Eliot when Charlotte Brontë's final novel appeared in 1853. "It is a still more wonderful book than Jane Eyre. There is something almost preternatural in its power."

Arguably Brontë's most refined and deeply felt work, Villette draws on her profound loneliness following the deaths of her three siblings. Lucy Snowe, the narrator of Villette, flees from an unhappy past in England to begin a new life as a teacher at a French boarding school in the great cosmopolitan capital of Villette. Soon Lucy's struggle for independence is overshadowed by both her friendship with a worldly English doctor and her feelings for an autocratic schoolmaster. Brontë's strikingly modern heroine must decide if there is any man in her society with whom she can live and still be free.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 13013 comments I love the Bronte Sisters although I have never read this book. My daughter has a copy so I'll be joining in. Thanks whoever picked and voted on it.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments I am trying to read this but it is slow going for me.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 13013 comments Me too Pamela. But probably not till December.

Heather L (wordtrix) I started reading it, but have not had as much time for it as hoped -- I started a part-time job last month that has reduced my reading time. I am just about through book one, so about a third of the way into it. Am most grateful for a background in French as I read this. Though some French passages are annotated, there are a lot of "common" words that are not defined in the footnotes.

Heather L (wordtrix) Thanks, Lisa Kay!

I finally made it through part one, and have finished a couple chapters in part two.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments Better than me. I stopped around chapter 5ish.

Heather L (wordtrix) Finished Vol two last night, and read the first chapter of part three. While the first section seemed to drag, the second seemed to go much faster -- owing, I believe, to there being more action in Vol two. Here's hoping the third and final section goes by even faster!
