readers advisory for all discussion

Has anyone read this series? I've heard fantastic things about it and am very intrigued, but slightly intimidated by the amount of books in the series. It seems a bit overwhelming. Is it worth jumping in and starting now? It it a series that I HAVE to follow in order? I'm typically a stickler for reading in order, but am willing to break that habit for a series this long if need be.
