Who else hated this?

Lara Lol, I see very differently than you, tbh. I thought the characters were very complex compared to other novels out there, and sure, it wasn't a mind blowing novel or anything, but let's be fair, it had a lot of things done well, when they could have been done far more poorly by a less competent writer.

Hannah Kelly I thought it was awesome but you're entitled to you're opinion. :)

Emma I didn't hate it, but I found it at bit slow to get the part of the book that really excited me. This wasn't my favourite book that I have read these holidays but it was still pretty good.

Kellie I read this book earlier this year and I really did enjoy it. I just loved the world the author created and I feel it could go really far. In saying that, I definitely thought it was predictable, but at the same time I still wanted to read it. I believe that anything can happen in a story and sometimes what you expect isn't the outcome.. so I have faith in the next book.

Diane It was a mash up of a number of similar books, I agree but I also really liked it. Liked the characters and the action, the "abilities". The plot twist was a bit predictable and the ending as well, also similar to other YA dystopian books. Still, I enjoyed it and that's all that matters to me.

Steph I loved it. why did you hate it?

Elizabeth I didn't hate the book but i just thought it was alright. In all honesty, it's basically a female/YA version/rip off of Red Rising. It kinda annoys me that this book is getting so much popularity when Red Rising is so much better.

Nurlely I actually like this book. I read the book because of its beautiful cover. I didn't care about the hype.
The plot has flaws here and there, but it is still interesting enough.
I love a book because it is fun to read and I can keep on reading after some pages.
If I dislike a book, I will not waste my time reading it, unless the book is the last book of a series.

But everyone has every right to what they feel about a book. For me, it is a waste of my energy.

Deborah I thought the book was great. Though you can predict some of it, there was a cool plot line and tortured characters... it was a great read. Can't wait for the next one.

No, I'd have to agree with you. My friend recommended it to me, but I was really disappointed when I actually read it- it lacked that special quality that grips me and I found the characters all quite... meh.

LilyCat I just thought it was way too much like a mashup between the Hunger Games (the powers, the poor underdog heroine beating Clove/Evangeline) and the Selection (the dresses, royals, and love triangle). Also, I didn't really feel much connection to the love interests, and felt like Mare was a redrawn Katniss with special snowflake superpowers. Other than that, I liked it.

LilyCat But yeah, I waited for it for, like, the entire summer (I was in a waiting list at the library) and definitely thought it was overhyped. Now, I've finally gotten An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, after another 4-month library wait, and I'm wondering if it's been overhyped, too.

Astoria I liked it, but then again I liked a lot of books this year. Illuminae was much better though.

I'm not sure why, but I tried reading the Hunger Games and just couldn't. The writing throws me off every time I try to read it.

I think there's also sort of a love square in Red Queen, because there's Maven, Cal, and I think her buddy Kilorn is going to be a love interest (view spoiler), and because he hates Cal. It's a good indicator there's a love triangle if the guys hate each other within seconds of meeting.

Lol Mare woud have loved Jared from Here Be Sexist Vampires (Deep In Your Veins, #1) by Suzanne Wright

message 17: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna Dunno i was actually thinking of reading this siries, though i havent read ya in ages and Distopien got boring for me, after it all started to sound the same, but i love me some super powers

Phoenix2 Didn't hate it, I mean there are worst books out there (cry out mash ups for sure). Maybe it's because the theme is a common one but it gets better and more original in the next books.

Taylor Elley I absolutely LOVE this book!!!!!!! It's part of one of my favorite series.

Yes the red rising parallels were ridiculous

message 21: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina When I first read this book, I loved it. But then when I started reading Glass Sword I realized how much I couldn't STAND Mare. She got annoying within the first 100 pages and I couldn't finish it.

I'maWatt? Hello, I agree and disagree with you. Mare is sometimes an annoying and arrogant person, but I can't judge the entire book based off the one character even if she's the main character. However, I dislike the romance aspect. it seemed entirely messed up. Like, REALLY Cal?!

message 23: by Megs (new) - rated it 3 stars

Megs To call it a Poor Man's Red Rising would be an insult to Red Rising, it's more like a Poor Man's Attempt At A Poor Man's Red Rising, but without any of the things that made Red Rising good in the first place.

message 24: by Ubah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ubah This book was definitely over hyped I don’t hate it I felt like the concept was pretty cool i just couldn’t get through this book I mean I did but I’m not reading the second one lol I did hate the ending however it was a nono for me

Evelyn Lawrence Steph wrote: "I loved it. why did you hate it?"

I agree I thought it was a great book so why did you not?

message 26: by Mel (new)

Mel Dear god, I hated it too!
Mare was such an annoying, indecisive, whining main character! It felt like all she did during the whole book was wander the castle with that guard, thinking,’ I’m the little lightning girl, life is so hard, oh the angst, blah blah blah.’ All of this made me feel extremely unsympathetic towards her. The fact three guys were simultaneously in love with her made everything worse, because this is just abnormal. Different people have different criteria for their love interests, which is shaped by their experiences, so how come three completely opposite guys want her? It’s not normal.

The evil stepmother thing I could see coming from the beginning. I mean, how can you concoct a freaking rebellion without a mind reader finding out?

Also Cal’s ‘Moral dilemma’ for continuing the war was ridiculous. Why not straight up admit he doesn’t care for his people as long as his family is n power? But that couldn’t have happened, of course , because Aveyard obviously heavily favors him. By the way, that’s a bad thing. Your story should come naturally, Shoving a pairing down readers throats isn’t professional.

The thing that irked me the most was that the whole ‘cool bending powers’ was ripped off from Avatar the Last Airbender, a show that had more character development, deep and complex issues that this whole book series ever had.

In the end, I would like to point out that this wasn’t the revolutionary, original book you all are obsessed about. It’s just a mash up of the most famous , original ideas . Sure, it was readable , but it didn’t deserve all the hype.

i totally get what you are saying. it was through sheer willpower that i trudged through this book

Targo I'm at page 100 right now and not sure if I should continue. The plot and stuff is predictable and I don't really see the point of the book yet. The relationships with characters aren't good but now that I started I wanted to finish. Suggestions..?

Amelia Megan I loved it but seriously, how did she not think Maven wasn’t his moms puppet. So weird and extremely predictable

addiereads I didn't hate the first two books. I just hated the fact that every book got bigger and I felt like the plot could have been condensed into three books. It was basically just Shadow and Bone with a less attractive villain.

Alexa Garay the second book was meh and i haven't read past that but I plan on reading the rest soon my problem with the books is that is a good but but a painful read

Olivia I haven't finished reading the entire collection yet, but so far the first book is among my favorites. The second, nothing to do with the first. The first was one of the best books I've ever read and the second was a huge disappointment.

salma elsersawy meeeeeeeeeeee

❤️ 📖 I truly thought this would be a good book, but I honestly truly hated this one :(

Carolina I felt like I was 12 again and reading a bad wattpad story. Its very messy and it feels like it wasnt planned. very slow as well, i never rolled my eyes so much in my life.

dam.. rly bad

Ty I was so bored the whole time to be fully honest, which was a shock with how much I love the dystopian genre. I didn't bother with any more books in the series and dropped off my copy at a little free library because I didn't even want to see it on my shelf. That sounds a little harsher than I mean it to, it wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either.

Claire Fuqua I didn't hate it, but I did feel like it was mediocre at best ngl

message 39: by C (new) - rated it 3 stars

C I didn't hate it...but it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be
