Sounds like a good plan Jingles.

I usually do the same with shorter challenges, but with TT it just isn't sustainable. I'm going to *try* and not push myself too far

message 152: by M (new)

M Beal | 1680 comments I usually read 5-6 books a week. I hope to keep that going through TT. Maybe get by TBR back down.

message 153: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Morning everyone! How are y'all today? All is ok here except I slept like CRAP. It was raining all through the night and for some reason, we have a weird splatter onto our bedroom window, it's really loud and even with my earplugs in, I couldn't fall asleep. It was driving me nutters. Did NOT want to get out of bed. :)

Consistent is good, jingles. I hope no one pushes too much that they burn out completely. Even when I burn out, I still read. I definitely don't give up for challenges. :)

TBR isn't meant to go down, M, it's meant to keep going up up up with all the new good books you find to read! :D

message 154: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Consistent will probably be the key for me, too, jingles. I'm going to try and ramp up my book reading, but not to the point of burn out. I guess it's all about finding that happy medium. I think this challenge will be good to find a comfortable reading pace I can stick with throughout the year.

And I totally agree about the TBR pile, Karsyn, lol. Every time mine starts to dwindle, I find myself at a bookstore or on GR adding more to it.

For TOWER TEAMS we're making The Child Thief by Brom (November's Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy BOM) an exception.

Meaning, we are granting the page points, participating in discussion points, and DQ's points, as long as you finish the book after the starting date

jingles Good morning, team!

Welcome to our team, Cristina!!

Hooray! Glad to hear it Maritza. I hate being in a cold office

message 164: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments That's awesome, Maritza! Cold workplaces are the worst...

message 165: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Howdy y'all! How is everyone today. Awesome about the temps being better, Maritza, that's great!! :)

I've been up for a little while today. Slept better last night. YAY! Just been organizing all my stuff for all my challenges, I'm in a total of 4, including this one.

There was some clarification on how the GOALS work, which I'm excited about. Basically, any book read at any point during tower team, can be used for any goal at any time. So, say I read "The Night Circus" in the first week, and it doesn't fit any of our 5 goals. But in week 5, one of the goals is a mostly black cover. I can then use The Night Circus for that goal.

What this means for us, is basically keep an eye on the goals and what books you've read that haven't been used for goals. When new goals pop up for us, we'll use books already read (but not used for goals) first, so we have the goal covered quickly, then from there, we can choose goals.

Make sense? Whatcha all think?

If you have any questions about TT at all, make sure you read the All About Tower Teams & All About Goals FAQ, if you still have questions, feel free to ask, either the mods or myself, if I don't know I'll find out. :)

Hi -- I agree on Clara -- my least favorite companion of the "reboot" Doctor Who. I'm also not fond of this iteration of the Doctor (why did Tennant have to leave? LOL)

Busy week -- and tomorrow I have my annual cardiologist's appointment. Everything seems fine, but I always worry the day of the appointment.

Checked out The Great Zoo of China from the library. I'm thinking of starting it the first day of the challenge, which is what, 8-9 days from now.

Finished The Weekend: A Novel, which was disappointing. I expected more from the author of The Reader. Started reading the newly published The Ark: The Ark Book One. The cover looks like a gritty action book, but so far it is a worldbuilding & character development science fiction novel.

message 169: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Morning! It's WAY too early for me to be outta bed, and I've been awake an hour. UGH!! My Hubby has the day off and decided to walk down to the barber's for a haircut. He's going to bring donuts on the way back, so I figured it was dumb of me to go back to sleep when I can have fresh donuts! :) So, I'm up and about. Ugh!

YAY, so glad you enjoyed GZOC M, what did you think? Fun and crazy, huh? I've only been listening at night, so I'll finish it tonight or tomorrow. I'm just at the part where (view spoiler). I hope you enjoy it, Deedee.

How's everyone else? Anything good going on?

message 170: by M (new)

M Beal | 1680 comments Very happy and on my way home from work. It is pouring rain and plenty chilly. A pot of tea is in order this morning along with a fluffy blanket, a book, and a cat.

Vikki | 419 comments It has been pouring rain and it is starting to get cold (at least for Texas) today. I have been reading with my 2 cats curled up next to me since I got home from work. Anyone doing anything exciting for Halloween?

message 174: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Our weather can't decide if it wants to start to get cold or stay warm. Two days recently we had highs in the low 50s and then the two days after that it was highs of almost 80s. Spastic weather! I'm ready for the cold, though I do feel bad for Hubby having to walk in it. His co-workers are good about giving Him rides when the weather is really bad, thankfully.

We don't do holidays. The extent of this holiday is my Hubby watching horror movies all month. He's watched 10 or 15 probably, and He'll watch some more tomorrow, when He's not watching His game.

message 175: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 229 comments I know this sounds terrible but some of my daughters friends have agreed to be killed and the bodies hidden and the pretend mess cleaned this year. Hopefully no one calls the cops LOL.

message 176: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) That does sound weird, Jennifer. I hope all goes ok with that, and people don't freak out and no one gets in trouble!

How's everyone else doing today? Just a lazy day here, played some game this morning, and Hubby has the Seminoles on now.

Getting stuff going for all the challenges starting this week. Quite a bit! Y'all ready for TT and any others you are in?

message 177: by Maritza (new)

message 178: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Just got back from taking the kiddos trick or treating. They had a blast and, for once, it wasn't raining/sleeting/snowing!

I'm finishing up a challenge and then I think I'll take it easy next week until TT starts. Getting excited :D

message 179: by M (new)

M Beal | 1680 comments Hope everyone had a fun evening. It is cold and raining in Vancouver, time to put on a pot of tea and warm up

message 180: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) How many challenges are you in Maritza? How bout the rest of you?

Good idea on taking it easy, Kerri. That's what I did all of Oct. I still read a lot, compared to what most people say is a lot, but it wasn't much for me.

I started an audiobook, I was hoping would get me through the week, but I listened to 30% just last night, so I'm sure I'll have to start at least one more prior to Sat. At least I can use them for my other challenges, one which started today.

•♥•Tina•♥• Hello everyone! Sorry it took me so long to join in! I hope everyone had a great Halloween :) what have I missed??

message 182: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 229 comments I am in three group challenges starting this month. Lord I hope I don't let Karsyn down hehe. Thank god one started today was dieting to get into some new books.

message 183: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Hi guys i;m in about two team challenges and trying to finish up about 10 individual challenges before the end of the year.

message 184: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Hey Cristina! Thanks for checking in.

You haven't missed much, just a lot of chit chat. I like a chatty team, so I'll always chat if people chat back. :)

You won't let me down, Jennifer! I'll keep on top of ya, if you need me to. :) You'll get sick of me with this and Slay Ride.

10 individual challenges, Maritza? Wow, that is a lot! I like the team ones so I don't do a lot of individual ones, though I will if they are fun enough.

I'm in 3 team ones, 1 individual one and plan to join another challenge that will be starting here at NRBC soon. Unclear if it'll be for Tower Teams, or may just be for all NRBC now. We'll see. Hopefully y'all will like it. I may have had a hand in making it. :D

The Quests

Ardeth: Thebes, City of the Living. Crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti the First. Home of Imhotep, Pharaoh's high priest, keeper of the dead. Birthplace of Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh's mistress. No other man was allowed to touch her. But for their love, they were willing to risk life itself.

Dr. Bey: [stutters in disbelief] Oh, look at this! Sons of the pharaohs! Give me frogs, flies, locusts, anything but YOU! Compared to you the other plagues were a joy!
Evelyn: I am so very sorry. It was an accident.
Dr. Bey: My darling girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was an accident. You are a catastrophe!
01 ~ Read a Book: features pharaoh(s), features accident of any sort, features plague. Frog/insect on cover. OR "Catastrophe" in title

Jonathan: [Jonathan hands Evie a strange box] My whole life I've never found anything, Evie. *Please* tell me I've found something.
Evelyn: [Evelyn opens the strange box, inside lies an ancient map] Jonathan?
Jonathan: Yes?
Evelyn: I think you found something.
02 ~ Read a book: features a map, features someone down on their luck, features a major find of some sort. Strange/unique box on cover. OR "Map" in title.

Evelyn: Mister O'Connell, can you look me in the eye, and guarantee me that this isn't all some kind of a flimflam? Because I am warning you…
Rick: You're 'warning me'? Listen, lady, let me put it to you this way. My whole damn garrison believed in the legend of Hamunaptra so much, that - without orders - they marched halfway across Libya and into Egypt just to 'find' that city. And when we got there... all we found was sand, and blood.
03 ~ Read a book: features an army/soldiers, features a legend, features long trip. Sand or blood on cover. OR "Legend" in title.

Beni: [after shipwreck] Hey, O'Connell! It looks to me like I've got all the horses!
Rick: Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river!
04 ~ Read a Book: features shipwreck, features horses, features river. Horses or River on cover. OR "Wrong Side" in title.

Evelyn: Oh my God it's a... it's a sarcophagus. Buried at the base of Anubis. He must have been someone of great importance. Or he did something *very* naughty.
05 ~ Read a Book: features something large that is buried/unearthed, features a dog/Anubis, features a person in power. Read an erotica/steamy romance. OR "Naughty" in title.

Evelyn: Look, I... I may not be an explorer, or an adventurer, or a treasure-seeker, or a gunfighter, Mr. O'Connell, but I am proud of what I am.
Rick: And what is that?
Evelyn: I... am a librarian.
06 ~ Read a Book: features an explorer, adventurer, treasure-seeker, gunfighter or librarian. Library on cover. OR "Librarian" in title.

Rick: That's called "stealing," you know.
Evelyn: According to you and my brother it's called "borrowing."
Rick: I thought the book of Amun-Ra was made out of gold.
Evelyn: It is made out of gold. This isn't the Book of Amun-Ra, this is something else. I think this may be the Book of the Dead.
Rick: The Book of the Dead? Are you sure you want to be playing around with this thing?
Evelyn: It's just a book. No harm ever came from reading a book.
07 ~ Read a Book: features a book that is "evil", features bad things happening from reading book. Has all gold cover, has all black cover. Book(s) on cover. OR "Book of the Dead" in title.

Ardeth: I told you to leave or die, you refused, and now you may have killed us all. For you have unleashed the creature that we have feared for more than four thousand years.
Rick: Relax, I got him.
Ardeth: No mortal weapons can kill this creature. He is not of this world.
08 ~ Read a Book: features life or death situation, features creature not of earth (alien, mythological). Weapon on cover, creature on cover. OR "Mortal" in title.

Evelyn: Listen we've got to do something! Once the creature's been reborn his curse is going to spread until the whole of the earth is destroyed!
Rick: And is that my problem?
Evelyn: Well it is everybody's problem!
Rick: Evelyn, I appreciate you saving my life and all but when I signed on I agreed to take you out there and bring you back, end of job, end of story, contract terminated!
Evelyn: Oh, that's all I am to you, a contract?
Rick: Ok look, you can either tag along with me or stay here... and try to save the world! What's it gonna be?
09 ~ Read a Book: features end of world, features a contract. Read a Dystopia. Suitcase on cover, destroyed world on cover. OR "Problem" in title.

Beni: Mr. Burns, Prince Imhotep thanks you for your hospitality.
Mr. Burns: No.
Beni: And for your eyes, and for your tongue.
Mr. Burns: Wha?
Beni: But I'm afraid more is needed. The prince must finish the job. And consummate the curse which you and your friends have brought down upon yourselves.
10 ~ Read a Book: features a prince, features a grateful character. Eyes on cover, tongue on cover, group of people (at least 4) on cover. OR "Curse" in title.

Evelyn: There is only one person I know that can possibly give us any answers. [sees Ardeth Bay] You?
Dr. Bey: Miss Carnahan. Gentlemen. [the men draw their guns and point them at Ardeth]
Evelyn: [about Ardeth] What is HE doing here?
Dr. Bey: Do you really want to know, or would you prefer to just shoot us?
Rick: After what I just saw, I'm willing to go on a little faith here.
Dr. Bey: We are part of an ancient secret society. For over three thousand years we have guarded the City of the Dead. We are sworn at manhood to do any and all in our power to stop the High Priest Imhotep from being reborn into this world.
Ardeth Bay: Now, because of you, we have failed.
Evelyn: And you think this justifies the killing of innocent people?
Dr. Bey: To stop this creature? Let me think...
Ardeth Bay, Dr. Bey: YES!
11 ~ Read a Book: features a secret society/group, features innocent groups of people killed, features small group against large enemy/situation. Ancient city on cover. OR "Secret" in title.

Evelyn: They mixed the books up. Mixed up where they were buried. So if the black book is inside the statue of Anubis... then the golden book must be inside...
Jonathan: Come on, Evie. Faster.
Evelyn:Patience is a virtue.
Rick: Not right now it isn't.
Jonathan:I think I'll go and get the car started.
Evelyn:I've got it. The Book of Amun-Ra is at...
Hamunaptra inside the statue of Horus. Take that, Bembridge scholars.
12 ~ Read a Book: features something not where it should be, features someone finding out the truth. Has a black AND gold cover, bird/Horus on cover. OR "Patience" in title.

Dr. Bey: It's the creature. He's fully regenerated.
Imhotep: Keetah mi pharos aja nilo, isirian.
Beni: [translating] "Come with me, my princess. It is time to make you mine, forever."
Evelyn: [corrects Beni] "For all eternity," idiot.
Imhotep: Kootash de na... aja nilo.
Beni: [translating] "Take my hand and I will spare your friends."
[Rick scoffs]
Evelyn: Have you got any bright ideas?
Rick: I'm thinking, I'm thinking...
Evelyn: You better think of something fast, because, if he turns me into a mummy you're the first one I'm coming after.
13 ~ Read a Book: features someone being taken to save others, features a princess, features a mummy. Mummy on cover. OR "Eternity" or "Forever" in title.

Winston: So, what's your little problem got to do with His Majesty's Royal Air Corps?
Rick: Not a damn thing.
Winston: Is it dangerous?
Rick: Well, you probably won't live through it.
Winston: By Jove, do you really think so?
Jonathan: Well, everybody else we've bumped into has died. Why not you?
Winston: What's the challenge, then?
Rick: Rescue the damsel in distress, kill the bad guy, save the world.
14 ~ Read a Book: features damsel in distress, features saving the world, features main/secondary character killed off. Airplane on cover. OR "Rescue" in title.

Jonathan: Well, I guess we go home empty handed. Again.
Rick: I wouldn't say that. [Kisses Evie]
Jonathan: Oh please. [to his camel] How about you darling, would you like a little kissy-wissy?
15 ~ Read a Book: features boy gets the girl, features HEA. Treasure on cover, couple kissing on cover. OR "Kiss" in title.

Karsyn (imzadi) Needless to say, I'll be doing this quest. :) As Karen said, it starts on the 7th, with Tower Teams and runs for a month. We can get points JUST FOR FUN, they don't count towards the Tower Teams points.

If you wanna join in, just let me know what book you've read that covers what task. There will be a spreadsheet when we get our TT spreadsheet, so I'll be keeping track of everything. You can do any or all tasks and all can be done multiple times.

Hope y'all like it. :)

That mini-challenge sounds fun! Also, that movie is one of my guilty pleasures, haha.

M Beal | 1680 comments Morning everyone. I have decided that I am out of my mind. November 1 starts NaNoWriMo. November 7 starts Tower Teams. This month is going to be busy.

•♥•Tina•♥• Hello everyone! I wanted to actually introduce myself :) My name is Cristina, I live in Illinois and am 21 yrs old in my senior year in college. I am studying Human Resource Management and currently looking for jobs (yikes). I have a huge family I spend most of my time with, and my boyfriend on 6 and a half years :) I have loved reading since elementary school but since college has started and I got my kindle my reading has been a constant part of my life! I read about 20 books a month and it is pretty much all romance. I am in a paranormal romance kick right now so that's my current fav. Any recommendations would be awesome, I feel like I'm running out of good books! I'm looking forward to this challenge, I really like interactive group challenges - not as much the individual ones. I think the group ones are more fun :) any suggestions for other group challenges I should join would be awesome as well!

That's all :)

I'm crazier then you. I am busy signing up for all the team challenges I hear about.

message 195: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Welcome Cristina, nice to "meet" you. Glad to have you with us. Hopefully the challenge will help you find a lot of books you'll enjoy! I could recommend some stuff that's not PNR as it's not something I like.

Good afternoon all. It's been a lazy rainy day here. Just been playing some Skyrim, getting some time in before all the challenges start, won't get much gaming time after that. :)

YAY, so glad y'all like the Mummy quest. The Mummy is my FAVORITE movie, so it was so much fun to make. If there's enough interest, I'll probably do a Mummy Returns one as well.

message 196: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments by the way you know i'll be doing the mini quest.

•♥•Tina•♥• I'm interested in any romance :)

message 198: by Karsyn (last edited Nov 02, 2015 06:49PM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Well, if you saw my recommendations on the first few pages, you probably realized I LOVE giving recommendations! :) I'm not a romance, on it's own, reader (except some erotica) so most of the romance I read is secondary, but I'll give ya some recommendations.

I see you've read some Nora Roberts and like her. She's great. I've read more books by her than any other author. My favorite series from her have been ~
The Next Always (Inn Boonsboro)
Daring to Dream (Dream Trilogy)
Key of Light (Key Trilogy)
and of course Naked in Death (Eve Duncan)

My favorite stand-alones of her have been ~
Blue Smoke (GREAT cute romance!)
The Collector
The Witness

Mostly Romance Series ~
Virgin River (Virgin River) one series I ALWAYS read, great characters/romance
The Wanderer (spin off of VR)
Baby Love (Kendrick/Coulter) touching romance stories
Summer at Willow Lake (Lakeshore Chronicles)

Some Romantic Suspense series I've loved (hostage rescue type stuff mostly) ~
The Darkest Hour (KGI) family does security, great characters/romance
Rescue Me (LCR)
To the Limit (Bodyguards)
Show No Mercy (Black Ops) set after Bodyguards

Romance with Paranormal abilities (psychics, mediums, ect)
Sleep with the Lights On (Brown & DeLuca) previously blind woman, sighted with "gift"
The Mercenary (T-Flac)
Stealing Shadows (Bishop Crime Unit) Paranormal investigators in FBI
After Dark (Griffin Powell)

Sci-fi with Romance
Timebound (Chronos) time travel, Romance plays a chunk of story
15 Minutes (Rewind Agency) time travel, MC in a relationship, not a big part of story

I saw you liked 50 Shades. I did not, so depending on what it is you liked about it, I can recommend some much better (my own opinion there) erotica/bdsm.

message 199: by Vikki (new)

Vikki | 419 comments Questions about the challenge:

When does the challenge start? I see the clock but I wanted to double check my math. Is this 1pm Central Time?

When will we know the team goals? I am guessing after the challenge officially starts but do they auto -post when the countdown clock gets to zero?

Do I have to post here if I participate in the BOM discussion or post which group I am in on the BOM discussion board? Do I have to do every day to get 20 points for the team or is it 20 points per day I post?

Anyone else reading Child Thief? I heard it was pretty dark and am about to start reading it.

•♥•Tina•♥• Thank you Karsyn! I am excited to take a look at those tomorrow :) I did love Fifty Shades, I liked the romance and the touch of bdsm but any books I have read with that since then have been too much!
