Can I use Anthologies, Graphic Novels, and short story collections for the challenge? (Because I just got a ton at the library.)

message 52: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Anthologies and short story collections can be used as long as they meet the page/word count.

Graphic novels are a no-no.

message 53: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Rules reminder :)

Books must be started after the start date of the challenge to count towards the challenge (Exception for current BOM)

◈ There will be 5 open goals for each team, when one is submitted on the spreadsheet, another will be automatically generated a short time after.

◈ Some goals are harder to get than others. So, every two weeks we will grant a "boon" to trade for a goal to each team.

◈ Boons are not required to be used, but they are not cumulative. Meaning, it will only be valid for two weeks.

◈ Since goals are randomized, we cannot prevent repetition. The moderators will keep adding new ones on a regular basis, also, any goal that occurs more than 2 times the number of teams participating, will be removed from the goal pool.

◈ Books must be />100 pages.

◈ Audio books are allowed. (For page numbers, use the "default" GR book page numbers.)

◈ No graphic novels.

◈ No little children's books less than 25,000 words.ArBookFind is a great site to double check.

◈ Any genre counts.

◈ Any book in any language will count, as long as it meets the criteria.

◈ "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.

TheBookishFairy (Lauren) This may sound like a stupid question but, how do we know which goals our team has at one time / when someone in the team has completed a goal etc.
Also, hello Karen! Welcome to the team! :)

It's not a stupid question, since you never had goals before.

The goals are randomized into the team spreadsheet, that is available for all to see.

It will be the same spreadsheet were the books got tracked, and it will have columns to put which book fulfills the goal.

Wait.. is easier with an example... you can check the Gannicus Spreadsheet from last gladiator games.

In the first page you can see the goals assigned to the team at the end of the challenge... and in the tab "goals" how they were marked as finished.

TheBookishFairy (Lauren) Brilliant, thank tou Sonia - the example was really useful. Looking forward to starting now! :!

Ghost in the Stacks With the task, our Leaders kept a list up in the thread of our current tasks, when one was claimed, they would post a new list.
This would keep us all up to date on what was open still.

megan | 1492 comments Great idea Abbie. I rarely log in from anything but the app on my phone, so getting to and from a spreadsheet can be a pain and data eater.

Yes same here. When I am at work I cannot access spreadsheets, and at home my kindle does not have the "newest" version of google docs, so it takes forever for it to pop up for me.

Karen | 65 comments Hi all

Thanks for the welcome.

I am a definite bookworm with my usual for a week 3 to 4 books depending on length and commuting time. I do tend to get quite competitive so will probably aim for more during the challenge - my commute is via public transport so some useful reading time :)

Absolutely love this gif....

via GIPHY

So difficult to pick favourite books as there are many but Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, Magician by Raymond Feist and anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez would all be up there.

As for a 'crush'...it would have to be Matthew Clairmont from the All Souls trilogy

Favourite band is virtually impossible but high on the list would be Muse, Placebo, Nine Inch Nails...

That's me for now, though just to say I've never done anything like this before so all tips/help would be really appreciated.

Btw, I've noticed we can vote again for the Goodreads Choice Awards , I like perusing the lists to check what I might have missed :) Hope you found some favourite reads this year.

Everyone: Where are you all from? I always like to know if I'll be awake and in the middle of the posting or if I'll wake up to catch up on a whole page of posts. :) I'm in North Carolina in the US--where it's slowly turning to winter. :(

Ghost in the Stacks I am in Texas, in the DFW...where it really doesnt hit winter much at all...

megan | 1492 comments I'm in southwest Ohio and it's been slowly turning back to summer here. One night of frost a month ago and it's been back to record highs in the 70s all week.
I am 5 hours behind London. Dubai (where I will be the next two weeks) is 9 hours ahead of here and Singapore (where I will be the first week of December) is 13 hours ahead. I can guarantee no consistent schedule.

Link is good. If you don't know how to link, then click add book/author. Try to update, when you finish ASAP. I'll (try) update our current score everyday. If I don't then feel free to.

Audrey Jane | 1815 comments I live in Belgium (GMT +1).
I'm planning to read Six of Crows. I didn't enjoy my last read from Karin Slaughter which was A Faint Cold Fear, not so sure about Pretty Girls. DQ's are a lot of fun to do but I don't know if I will be on schedule this time.
I'm planning to use my first post (post 30) to track my reads during Tower Teams.

I'm going to do Six of Crows--even though I baaaarely made it through Shadow and Bone--the premise sounds interesting. I'm not sure of my ability to come up with thought provoking questions--or to keep up with the reading exactly--to volunteer for questions. :)

What books are you going to read first for the challenge? I'll be reading The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

Looks like the book tracking device the mods gave us

Grace (Calcat) | 665 comments ❅Rebecca❅ wrote: "What is this? https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/..."

That is our tracking thread. Once the challenge has started We each claim a post there and use it keep a list of our books. It means they don't get lost in this thread. It will make it a lot easier to track things and update the spreadsheet.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Hey team!

So... we're working on the spreadsheets at the moment, and for Athena's to work properly, can you make sure you've created the shelf for the challenge and post here the name?

Thank you!

Ghost in the Stacks ❅Rebecca❅ wrote: "What books are you going to read first for the challenge? I'll be reading The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson"

I will be starting with The Dark Monk (The Hangman's Daughter, #2) by Oliver Pötzsch , as I need it for another challenge

Nathan Marsh (meowscapades) Am I able to join this? I've never done anything like this and it sounds super neat and interesting.

message 90: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1607 comments Good morning!

I'm in England, it is so miserable here at the moment. I'm working on GMT time, so technically today is 07/11/2015 for me at 7am so I feel i have to wait so much longer!

This is my shelf, its just named 'tower teams' so pretty simple. https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Ignore the few books already there, I was just pre-planning what I hope to read for the challenge.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to start with, I've got too many to choose from. Also I won't be reading any of the BOM they just don't appeal to me.

Morning Nathan, I'm not entirely sure if you can join I think there was a message that it was all full but you could check at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

There is also a questions thread too, located https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Hope that helps you!

message 91: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Marsh (meowscapades) Thanks! Maybe I'll just join the next one ;) .

Please check the Spreadsheet FAQ's.

message 95: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1607 comments Hi guys, I've had a look at our goals and one goal is Read a book with a red, pink or orange dress on the cover. I have a book that I was going to read that has a pink dress on the cover, so if I could do that goal I'd appreciate it :)

Book is Something About You it'l be in paperback edition just for clarification.

Ghost in the Stacks Okay, I haven't really seen our captains today...
Here are our current goals

°Read a book set in your home state or country
°Read a book with a red, pink, or orange dress on the cover
°Read a book has has a number in the title, and the series is one higher then that number
°Read a book that has been on your "too read shelf" for more then 1 year
°Read a book shelved (listed on the first page on GR) as to-read - plurals and spelling acceptable

Ghost in the Stacks Only 17 minutes till start time!
