Series are typically an opportunity to dive deep into a new universe. So this week you are just beginning that journey.
For those reading in order: May 27- June 2.

Suggestions for this week: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
To discuss the book, don't forget to add it in the A-Z folders or join the existing discussion.

Progress Post:
- What are you reading this week?
- Are you a fan of series? (in general)
- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?

Mariana Custodio (marianaluthor) So, I read Daughter of Smoke & Bone which I was really excited about reading.
I do want to read the rest of the series in 2016 and it was a great surprise for me!

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 244 comments What are you reading this week?
Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by S.J. Bolton

Are you fan of series?
OMG it was the best book I read in the last year. I loved it. Easily ★★★★★

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Abso******lutely. As soon as possible. :)))

message 4: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments I read Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. I don't read a lot of series, with the exception of Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones) and the occasional historical fiction (Follett, Wouk, Auel). No to the rest of the series. I guess 1930s sci-fi is not my thing.

Elaine | 1 comments I read Kiss of Midnight by Lara AdrianLara Adrian. I read a ton of series books but had not gotten to this one yet...it was meh. However, I do still plan on reading more in the series as there was definite promise, it just hasn't been realized yet. This was my week 2 read as I am reading the list out of order.

message 6: by Odie (new)

Odie (odette_fraser) | 30 comments One of my reading plans for this year is to read all of Colleen Hoover books. a lady in this group mentioned Slammed so I started to read this 2 days ago. i didnt even realize that this was a series until i was looking at all of her books. ill be damned but 2 days later (today), im already reading This Girl which is the 3rd book. So that would be a "yes" to all questions then...

message 7: by Camilla (new)

Camilla - What are you reading this week?

- Are you a fan of series?
Not especially, but many of the books I read just happen to be part of a series.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Yes, definitely, I will continue with Wayward for the week 23 task (next book in series), I already have it waiting.

Jenny (pagelady) What are you reading this week? Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Are you a fan of series? My teens are. I've only read the prologue, but so far so good!

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016? Yes! If the first book holds my attention.

In general, I am. They're great go-to books to fill in a reading gap, especially, although sometimes I find one I like so much that I binge.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Depends on how much I like this one, but it's not out of the question!

message 10: by LitWithBritt27 (new)

LitWithBritt27 (brocmo1) This week I am reading 'The Selection'.

I love series. Twilight. Vampire Academy. Hunger Games. Divergent. Crank. Delirium. (Young Adult series obviously!!)

So far I like the first book. As long as I continue to enjoy reading them, I have the rest of the series and the novellas on my agenda to read for this challenge.

- What are you reading this week?
"Northern Lights" (His Dark Materials #1) by Philip Pullman

- Are you a fan of series?
I am now, and not realising when I began that it was the novel which the movie "The Golden Compass" was based. Recommended by my friends daughter, and I loved it.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Definitely.

message 14: by Stacey (last edited Jan 27, 2016 07:55AM) (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments - What are you reading this week? Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
- Are you a fan of series? This series, yes. But normally, I don't like reading series. I can get through about three books (for the recent terrific Neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante there were four), but that's usually my limit.

That said, I just finished this first book, a sci-fi read, both interesting and very creepy. I am sort of ambivalent about the narrator - an anti-social, brooding and somewhat narcissistic biologist. While I don't like her as a person and wouldn't want to be friends with her, I admire her courage, curiosity and passion for nature, the landscape and all things ecological. The backstory of her upbringing and marriage is also heartbreaking and quite lonely, so I feel somewhat sorry for her, too.
- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016? Since I enjoyed this first novel so much, I hope to finish the trilogy later this year.

--- Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. 5 stars!

Are you a fan of series?
--- Usually, yes.

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
--- I'm only around 20 pages in, so I'm not totally sure. I'm leaning on saying "yes" because it has a pretty high rating (4.06), but only if I have enough time left. [Feb 9 edit:] It's really good! If I could squeeze some of the next in the series in, I would. But I would also like to stick to what I already planned.

Emily (emilyesears) | 412 comments What are you reading this week?

I read Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s, which is the first book in the Midwife Trilogy.

- Are you a fan of series?

I like some series. As a kid I read all kinds of series--Little House on the Prairie, Babysitters Club, Harry Potter. I also read the entire Hobbit/LOTR series for the first time in 2012. And this year I want to read the entire Sherlock Holmes series and the Chronicles of Narnia series. So I guess I like more classic series?? I don't read more modern series like Sarah J. Maas and Cassandra Clare like a lot of Goodreads people seem to.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?

Probably not---I have so many other things to read. I do want to watch the show sometime this year though.

Claudia | 19 comments What are you reading this week?
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Are you a fan of series?
It always depends on the series. If I like the first one, I usually look forward to the other installments. If I don't really like the first one, series usually annoy me, because I still want to find out how it ends. But I don't want to read 5 more books.

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
I plan on reading the next book when it comes out this year.

Are you a fan of series?
Some, yes, what I call "serious mystery" (ala Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs and Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache).
Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Maybe one more this year. I am in too many challenges and will have too many series that I already need to keep up with to fit more in (maybe...I'll have to see...)

A Certain Magical Index, Vol. 1 by Kazuma Kamachi

Are you a fan of the series?
I've seen the anime. It's one of my favourites, even though I still need to catch up on it. At some point I started collecting the books. Still haven't gotten around to reading any of them yet.

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Probably not. I will be reading it in Japanese and there are another twenty odd books in the series.

Love You More (Tessa Leoni, #1, Detective D.D. Warren, #5) by Lisa Gardner
- Are you a fan of series?
Well it's only the first book that I'm reading, so a little early to say. Also, I image that the following books will be a little different, as this one is really setting the scene for the main character.
- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
I might try to read the next one to see if I enjoy it as much as the first.

message 24: by J (last edited Mar 15, 2016 07:51PM) (new)

J Austill | 1118 comments - What are you reading this week?

Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher

- Are you a fan of series?

I guess I probably am. I do read a lot of books that are in series. It's about safety, if I liked a book in the series then it is highly likely that I will like other books in the same series. Stand alones don't have that sort of promise.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?

I planned to, until I read it. Now I'm just not too sold. It was an easy read, fast paced with lots of action. But the twists were predictable and it was chock full of fantasy tropes. I'm tired of reading the same fantasy book over and over with a new author's name on the front.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling

Are you a fan of series?
Not particularly. They take a lot of commitment, and I've seen a lot of good books get watered down just so an author can extend it into a series. It seems like everything now has to be a series. I'm quite grumpy about this topic.

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
I was initially going to work all 7 books into my challenge, then I thought better of it. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the series and didn't want to stick myself with 7 books if I was going to be unhappy reading them. For now, I have settled for reading the first 2 for sure, and possibly the 3 this year. If I like the first three, I will try to fit the other four into my side reads throughout the year, or I will try to incorporate them into next years challenges.

It's great to see someone else who actually hasn't read the Harry Potter series :P I'm thinking about entering it under my "author you should have read by now" but I go back and forth. I haven't really gotten into the movies either so that's not really a good sign for me.

I will read it at some time or another, if I like this book. A good friend recommended it, so I will just have to wait and see.

Yes! Whenever you find a new one, it gives you so much to look forward to! And if it's already completed, then you can catch up on it and binge-read it and it's amazing!

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
The rest isn't going to be published by the end of 2016, but so far I think I'll read it. The next one comes out this year, and then final book comes out next year??

Not in 2016, but I might pick up the second book. After the first half of the book, it's gotten way more interesting.

Yes I love reading series! What I love about them is that you're kinda going on a long journey with the characters. Also I love to read fantasy so if the worldbuilding in the book is awesome I like that you're getting a deeper view into everything over a few books as just in a standalone.

- Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Actually it's just going to be a duology, but yes I think I'm going to read the sequel which is coming out later this year.

I didn't think I was, but I'm not really sure. I absolutely love Harry Potter, and I re-read the series every year, cause I'm weird like that. I also have a lot of series on my TBR shelf.

Finally figured out a way to squeeze in the book of the month without messing up my plans too much. I didn't realize it was part of a series. I'm reading The Cuckoo's Calling

Are you a fan of series? (in general)
There are a few series that I really love (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Series of Unfortunate Events, Pendragon, Miss Peregrine), but in general I prefer standalone books. I find many series to drag things out too long or the books can be repetitive. I'm not opposed to reading a series if it's well-done, but I don't really seek them out either.

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
Probably not this year, to be honest. But if I like it, I'd be open to reading more in the future, possibly.

Not especially. The main series that I've read seem to be detective novels with recurring protagonists...

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?
So I may have cheated with this book?! But, even though this is listed as a series on Goodreads, so far there has just been this novel and a short prequel. I'll be reading the prequel and any sequels that turn up. But I don't think Weir will be writing any more in 2016.

message 42: by Susan (new)

Susan This week, I am also starting Folk Stories of the Hmong: Peoples of Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, which is part of the World Folklore Series.

I don't think I am a big fan of series. There are many books to this and they stand alone, as well. I might read a few more, but I will probably not read all of them.

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | -7 comments What are you reading this week?

I was planning to read Graceling by Kristin Cashore (I think I put that on my TBR from a Buzzfeed Series you Must Read post)...but I'd actually started Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson as a side-read, so I'm subbing this in instead.

Are you a fan of series? (in general)

Not as much as I used to be. I find it harder to commit to them now as my TBR is so big, and I'm enjoying stand alone reads more. Having said that, there are series I've been following for years with characters that I am super-attached to (e.g., Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, Linda Fairstein's Alex Cooper, Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta, Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch) - I read each new one as they are released. I think it's the YA series I struggle to finish, as the genre is pretty crowded these days!

Do you plan on reading the rest of the series in 2016?

It will have to be amazing for me to slot it into a jam-packed book plan!

I started many series this year, but most are fantasy so if the 1st Darkest is good, I'll probably finish to read the series this year, it will be a nice change :)
