Lexie Meltzer In this book, I feel like dialogue plays a big role. In both ways like how, "It's my (my is in italics) bracelet. I was wearing it this morning. I'm still (still is in italics) wearing it now" (17). Since these words are in italics, it shows her surprise toward this situation. In this part, she is just figuring out that she is dead and looking at her dead self. When she says this, it is obvious that there is surprise and worry in her voice since there are italics. What do you guys think? Do you know of any other examples? Also, " 'Woo hoo!' Teddy yelps, waving his arms in the air." From the description of how he said 'Woo hoo', we can figure out how he is saying this which shows us his character in the moment. What do you think?

RORY McNERNEY I agree. Teddy's cheers showed his rowdy character. And the italic words in that scene does show her surprise.

Lexie Meltzer Yes!

Lexie Meltzer The first quote that I wrote was both how the character says something, and what they say. Same with the second quote. The second quote impacts my impression of Mia's brother because we learn that he LOVES chocolate chip pancakes when he says 'Woo hoo!. The first quote has an impact on the story since this is the first sign we get that Mia is dead and staring at her dead self. Also, from this we learn more about her life/character because now we know that her boyfriend who she loves dearly gave her that bracelet. She is deciding weather to stay alive with him or die with her family

Lexie Meltzer In this book, what someone says plays a big role. Mia's relationship with Kim (her best friend) started off on the wrong foot because Kim called Mia a bad word, and they got into a fist fight. After this, Kim was innocent and never cursed. Her character was dynamic because of this. Later on in the book when Mia is in the hospital, Kim says a VERY bad word which makes her character change again. This expresses her love for Mia through what she says and how. Since she is reacting to this situation by crying, and saying bad words, it shows how much she wants Mia to stay alive.

Lexie Meltzer The quote for this is on page 65 and states, " 'Stop it!' Kim demands. 'If I'm not crying, there's no fu*k**g way you're allowed to.' " In the beginning it is the way Kim says what she says since she demanded. Later on when the bad word comes up, it is what she says that is important. In this one quote, it expresses Kim's true emotions about the situation and her reaction to the horrifying thing that is happening to Mia.

Lexie Meltzer Some other examples are, "At the mention of the word Halloween (Halloween is in italics), Teddy zoomed down the stairs, ignoring me and yanking on Adam's wallet chain. 'Wait here!' He demanded..." (90). This is two in one. Since the word Halloween is in italics, it shows hoe she is saying something and was exaggerating. Also, by the author writing he demanded, it shows the way Teddy said something. This quote is both types of dialogue.

Also, " 'Ahh, I'm not much of a costume girl.' Adam rolled his eyes" (91). In this, it shows how Adam does not believe in what Mia is saying and doesn't care (by his body language).

RORY McNERNEY I agree. Although their relationship started out bumpy, they later got close, and now the cursing is her way of showing her emotions towards the situation.
