Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 36 comments Along with a bunch of other readers, I'm starving for paranormal and sf books with more diverse characters. Skin color, background, ages, classes.

I'd love to hear your recommendations.

The Shambling Guide to New York City. It has very kind of creature, even a death goddess. Very interesting. I'm reading it now.

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) All the Paths of Shadows by Frank Tuttle looks to be developing in that direction. The main is fairly standard, but the love interest towards the end of the book is quite different. The second in the series is due out this year.

All the Paths of Shadow

I think his Markhat series has some unusual characters too, but that also happens more after book 3. The first 3 are fairly short reads and ghost stories if I recall correctly. Later in the series there are some different characters with main parts: Ogres, banshees and Death. There are a lot of the standard characters too though--vamps. I think the witch in the series is pretty unusual and she's also a riot.

As for diverse in other ways, Ben Aaronovitch writes an UF series...I don't tend to pay much attention to this sort of thing or remember it, but I think the main is a black cop. He has his challenges (it's set in London so the local is fairly 'normal' for UF).

Sarah Walker | 3 comments Lately I have been reading all these books by Kresley Cole. Her books are really good. There's a lot of different characters and there is a lot of action, romance, sex, and anything that is paranormal like werewolves, witches, and tons more!

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) Richard wrote: "Gina Damico Croak, Scorch, Rogue. A trilogy about teenagers recruited to harvest souls for the afterlife. Different characters, teenage snark and Multiple places in the book that were so funny, I d..."

What is diverse about them--type of characters? Race? (Okay the last one is somewhat unusual, but I've read a few Valkyries).

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 2112 comments Black Dagger Brotherhood has diverse characters. Although, you have to get a little later into the series before the diversity shows itself a bit more but its there :)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 36 comments Yeah, BDB was getting very disappointing. All the characters talked like Ice-T but apparently no non-white people lived in that city. Ree-diculous!

I like the IAD books a lot, but they all look like WASPs also. Let's find more characters that reflect other cultures.

Here's where I'm listing the recommendations I'm getting. http://qr.net/uLjo.
There has been a flood of suggestions. I thank you for all you can send me. I'll get them up eventually so keep em coming.

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 2112 comments I'm still hanging in there with BDB. Haven't given it up yet :)

IAD is good but I hear what you are saying there.

I'll have to keep thinking on some suggestions and recommendations.....

Kay Causer (kaycauser) | 22 comments This is a really interesting thread. I read Zoe Marriott's Shadows on the Moon last year and loved it. All the characters were Asian. She often has Asian characters in her books from what I've seen.
Shadows on the Moon

Malinda Lo has a few books with lesbian characters and different races but I haven't read any of them yet
Huntress

I really like Asian culture so I have mixed a few Korean characters into my own series. One of the main characters of the 3rd book will be Korean too (I shouldn't say it but she's my favourite)
Hummingbird

Akaria Gale | 21 comments Wild Seed is such a good book. One of my all time favorites.

Fire Baptized (Santeria Habitat, #1) by Kenya Wright is on my TBR list and seems to include a wide variety of creatures as well as diverse characters.
