Mandy, I hated this one, too. What a disappointment to me, but it is beloved by many.

Kim | 119 comments 25.1- The good plain cook- Bethan Roberts and
The Fireside Book- David Hope

I wasn't really keen on the Good plain cook, but probably because it went in a totally different direction than I expected.
I did enjoy reading the Fireside Book. My mum used to have these every Christmas- each poem is illustrated and it really was a charming little book.

message 603: by Petra (new)

Petra I completed Task 5.1 by reading The Children of Men.
I thought I'd like this book more than I did.
The story is one of a dystopean society in the not-so-distant future. The premise is bleak with the thought that the human race has lost the ability to procreate. People are resigned and depressed. The world is in a hopeless state.
I think because of this situation, I found the dissident group of "radicals" somewhat unbelievable in that their demands were irrelevant in the context of the novel. Their demands would have naturally occur within a few years. Why risk life and freedom? The main character, Theo, also seemed distant and emotionally removed from the world around him, which made his involvement in the movement somewhat unbelievable. Again, why risk a comfortable life with no worries for risk and possible death?
That said, I did enjoy the book and the premise of the story.

I think this one would work for the movie task: The book was published in 1999. Clive Owen is in the movie.

Shoot! of course both the movie and the book were pretty dislikable because of the subject matter. So, in spite of Mr. Owens, no harm, no foul.

Petra Janice wrote: "Shoot! of course both the movie and the book were pretty dislikable because of the subject matter...."

I read some of the reviews after reading this book and it seems that the movie is better than the book with a faster pace and more action. I'm thinking of watching the movie just to see for myself. More action would have really helped this book.

message 608: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 505 comments Hey there!

Finished Nicole's Task!
Still Another Day by Pablo Neruda and In for the Kill by John Lutz.

Sadly, this hasn't helped me appreciate poetry anymore, but I am proud of myself for choosing a widely respected poet and challenging myself.

In for the Kill was an average police procedural, following the hunt for a serial killer in NYC. It was 'meh', but it was a fast read. Read all 500 pages in like 3 hours.

Kay (neenamara) | 71 comments Finished 20.1 (Julie's Task) with The 19th Wife A Novel by David Ebershoff.

I doubt I'd have picked this up if I wasn't doing Julie's challenge, but I'm really glad I did. It was a mix of both historical novel and modern mystery, told from alternating perspectives, which I almost always enjoy. Either one on their own would have been interesting, but together they worked perfectly. Also, after finishing this book, I'm pretty sure this would also work for 25.3 (Wendy's task) because the protagonist of the modern half of the book is a positive gay man (who is, as the blurb on the back cover says, "immensely likeable").

message 613: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) I finished task 15.10 (teacher/student)

I read The Last Lecture and Hush, Hush. Both were great books. If anyone is looking for a Twilight type YA book to read, definitely recommend Hush, Hush....characters are high school students and it is about fallen angels. The book isn't available to the public until the end of October, but I had an ARC. Highly recommend!

Jaclyn (jaclynr0806) | 22 comments Ok, I'm finally getting on the board! I've read one other book, but it's for a multi-book task, so this is my first posting!!!

For task 5.7 I read The Good People of New York by Thisbe Nissen

I chose this book b/c the thing I am thankful for is my daughter and this is primarily a story based around a mother-daughter relationship (it's what drew me to this book even before this task was established) and it's a carry-over from the summer challenge. Unfortunately I didn't like it very much. I don't agree with her parenting principals at all and the story ultimately felt pointless, it was just one string of stories after another and they weren't really all that connected. I don't recommend it.

The other book I've read is The Graveyard Book, but I'm planning on using it for task 25.8 - Thing. The others are next up on my list, I think...

Task 15.2 Alternate History---The Valley-Westside War by Harry Turtledove

I'm not sure if this is where you put the review as well, but here goes anyway. So the task includes a review as to whether or not you think that the world or country would be better if the authors alternate history is really what happened. I'm going to go with a definite no in this case. This book was about what would happen if the US and the USSR would have launched atomic bombs on each other during the Cold War. In this alternate universe, the US is pretty much wiped out. This book is set in Los Angeles and different parts of LA are like different countries at war with one another. There is no water, no electricity, no modern advancements at all. The result of the nuclear war with Russia was knocking the US back to pretty much the Dark Ages. So I definitely do not think that we would be better off if Harry Turtledove's version of the Cold War was what really happened.

If this isn't where we are suppose to post reviews sorry.

We had this book around the house when I was little, but I never read it (mostly because my sister always hid the copy since it was "HER BOOK"). I really enjoyed it though, a great children's book!

Petra I finished Task 20.1 (Julie's task) by listening to The Screwtape Letters.
I really enjoyed this humerous book and it can be read on many different levels.
The book contains letters from Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood. It's filled with human wisdom and philosophy and it's interpretation will be different for all readers. This is a book that one can read over and again and always find something new.
I was surprised at how many of the issues and problems of C.S. Lewis' times were similar to those we face today in society. He talks about Democracy and schooling methods, etc. that are very similar to what one hears on the News today.
This is one for the Bookshelf and I'm going to have to find a copy.
Thanks, Julie, for your task. I quite enjoyed it.

Diane | 741 comments 15.7 Let's Get Physical. The types of exercise I do most aren't conducive to an audiotape, unfortunately, so I read a sports-related book instead called So This Is What Happened to Charlie Moe by Douglass Wallop. Apparently I'm the only person in the history of Goodreads who has ever read it. It's a novel about a pro-football player who mysteriously disappears. For my "physical" portion of the task, I watch and cheer on my 1st grader as he practices and/or plays flag football each week.
I also added another Berenstain Bears book, The Berenstains' B Book, to that completed task (I read it with my little football player!).

Katie | 4 comments It has been a slow reading week for me, but I did manage to finish task 15.4. I read The Currents of Space by Isaac Asimov. I'm not a big SciFi fan, but I did enjoy the way Asimov manipulated the chronology of his story. He's a great writer; I might be tempted to try him again, definitely for any future SciFi tasks.

I watched a science documentary called "Roving Mars," which was originally an IMAX film. It was fascinating and cute--the engineers talked about the rovers like they were their children with unique personalities. It was only 40 minutes, so I also watched a few episodes of Planet Earth: Fresh Water, Mountains, and Great Plains. Beautiful.

by readingFatherland

For the review:

I don't think that the world would be better if the author's history had occurred. In the novel the Germans have won WWII, and control most of eastern Europe. Germany is the dominant power in Europe and the Nazis are still in charge. While the cold war was not an ideal situation I do think that it is better than having the Nazi party as an ongoing world power. Additionally, in the novel it seems that more Jews were murdered in the camps since there were no survivors, and no invasion to stop the operation of the camps.

I watched the movie Twilight first, then read the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I loved the movie, though I never thought I would. Since I liked it so much, I read the book. I liked it even more. Though the movie has the same basic ideas and concepts, the book (as usual) has much more detail. I prefer the way the book portrayed certain parts versus the way they were changed to fit the movie.
