Amanda (amandaroby) | 29 comments Finished a few. I haven't had as much access to a computer, so I'll probably be listing these a few at a time, even though I'm finishing them a bit slower than that.

For task 20.2, I finished Fade, by Lisa McMann; Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett; and The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostava.

That brought me to 90 points.

For task 15.7, I read Football for Dummies, by former player Howie Long. I also watched some Monday night football, which was a great opportunity to go out with friends.

That brought me to 105 points.

For task 5.3, I read Under the Black Flag: The Romance and Reality of Life Among the Pirates, by David Cordingly

This brings me to a total of 110 points.

TOTAL POINTS THUS FAR: 110

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 261 comments Changed some books around and realized that I could report this:

50:

The Sound of Munich: this is about a girl doing a semester abroad in Germany. She discusses all of the sights and new food she is trying. In addition, a lot of the book is complicated by her trying to learn German and communicate with others in an unfamiliar language.

Incantation: I actually just listened to this book becuase it was on my TBR and was something I could finish before leaving work and then realized that it could fit here. This book is all about emotion. The main character (Ester) is experiencing love, sadness, fear, anger, and many other emotions. Her family is secretly Jewish in a time in Spain where being Jewish is illegal. Her family is captured and she and her grandmother are in hiding while her grandfather and mother are put on trial and she has to face this reality and keep her grandmother going while being furious and hurt by the betrayal that started this change of events.

Oh. My. Gods.: My keepsake is a owl figurine that my aunt and uncle brought me back from Greece. It is what got me interested in Greek history and mythology. This book was a really cute YA book about a girl who finds out that the Gods were real and that their descendants have super powers.

Task 15.2 - Alternate History: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (10/15/09)

This book was... all right. Not my favorite. Interesting, certainly, but not my favorite as far as writing style went...

I'm also supposed to say which version of history I would prefer, and though it would be cool to have time travelers and be able to travel into books and things... I'm pretty glad life is the way it is today. I'm glad we don't have to worry about whether or not some rogue time traveler went back in time and killed some important person, altering the timeline forever.. . ALTHOUGH, I believe in the other timeline there was no WWII, and therefore no Holocaust... which would be a VERY good thing, obviously.

Year Of The Hangman by Gary L. Blackwood -- 261 pp (10.15.09)

This book takes place in the Year of the Hangman--1777. The Colonist, Benjamin Franklin is living in New Orleans and writing an underground rebel newspaper, the Liberty Tree. George Washington was captured and awaiting execution. And General Benedict Arnold is calling the shots. (I'm not going to tell you everything!) Basically, this is a what if Washington's men didn't re-enlist, didn't launch a surprise attack on Trenton and go on to defeat the British. I think what I really did like about this book is to make me think about what it would have been like during that time--not knowing who you could really trust and was the side you were on, the "right" one? It is mind-boggling to think what our country would have become had the British won. The book leaves off with the hope that the Colonist will continue trying to gain their freedom, but with the uncertainty of who can be trusted with their loyalities-the French, the Spanish? There are a lot of what ifs just due to the change in the loyalities of the different countries trying to make their mark in what we know as our United States. I'm happy that things when they way they did. It would be hard to think of what it would be like any other way.

10.2 (addiction) by reading Dry A Memoir which was entertaining and sad and thought provoking.

15.9 (homework) by reading Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Long Way Home which was a re-read that I had been wanting to do for a while. I recently saw Joss Whedon interviewed by Ira Glass at a fundraising event in NYC and it made me want a refresher of the beginning of BTVS Season 8 (or so the comics are called by many). If I were to assign homework to align with this read, I would have students watch Joss Whedon's Equality Now speech and then either write about who they thought in this graphic novel was an example of a "strong female character" and why (of course) OR to write a graphic novel (comic length - i.e. chapter - rather than novel length) about an amazing woman in their life or in the world/history.

This book takes place mainly in Chile but also in Germany and other parts of South America. I thought that the book had alot of potential but fell flat for me. It was about 2 germans who stole gold coins from the Nazi's who had stolen them from a Jew that they sent to a concentration camp. Krista (kacey14) Newly Completed Tasks:

5.9 – Coming Of Age Or All Grown Up (And Then Some):
Senior Citizen Main Character
Mrs. Jeffries Weeds the Plot (Victorian Mystery) by Emily Brightwell Mrs. Jeffries Weeds the Plot
A fun little ‘cozy’ mystery set in Victorian London. This book was from the middle of the series. I’ll probably go back and read some of the earlier books eventually. It was an interesting concept. Mrs. Jeffries (the housekeeper) and Mrs. Goodge (the cook) are both “all grown up, and then some”. :-)

50.1 – PJ’s Mid-Way Task
1) Senses – Hearing: Hands of My Father A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love This is an extraordinary book about growing up the hearing child of deaf parents. My mother grew up in the same situation. I think this book captured a true picture of what both sides of that family situation experienced. Living without the sense of hearing is so confining in so many ways, but as the father in the book explains other senses develop to help compensate for the loss of hearing. American Sign Language is such a nuanced language that involves your whole body not just your mouth and vocal cords. It is an outstanding book. I gave it 5 stars. Donna Jo, thanks for the recommendation!

2) Emotions – Fear & Anger: The Scarecrow The killer in this book felt anger towards his mother and others as he was abused as he was growing up. He turned that anger to into the need to control and kill. The people he selected as victims felt fear as they were being held and ultimately killed. I think the book highlights the long lasting effect that abuse which causes fear and ultimately (in this case) underground rage has on a child. Anger left untended can manifest itself in violence with tragic consequences. I thought this was a pretty good thriller.

3) Momento – Photo of my Mom and me in Paris: Talk to the Snail Ten Commandments for Understanding the French I have fond memories of my mother meeting her linguistic match in Paris. My Mom didn't want to try to speak French, and the desk clerk at the hotel didn't want to try to speak English. My Mom did actually learn that the word for newspaper in French is 'journal' after the desk clerk handed her a French/English dictionary. We laugh about that to this day. This is a humorous book about French culture and suggestions for how to best navigate it.

Helen Southall (hsouthall) | 356 comments 15.6 Creative Minds: Music - Folk

1. Stephen Collins Foster: A Biography of America's Folk Song Composer by Harold Vincent Milligan

Since I have always been a fan of folk music, I thought I would explore some of its early origins. Stephen Foster is the most famous of the early composers - 1826-1864. The book was not well written but the information was very interesting. Contained a lot of history about the old minstrel shows and performing venue of that era. Also, the major media of distribution of songs was sheet music so Foster's songs made very little money - even though some of them (My Old Kentucky Home, etc) have become standards.

2. Anthology of American Folk Music by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

This is a 6 CD anthology which contained the early recordings of folk music (1920's thru 1932). It was fascinating to hear the original versions of some of the folk music that became so popular in the 60's. The booklet that came with the anthology was extremely interesting describing the evolution of the folk music era and discussing the early performers.

Thanks so much for this task - it was a wonderful journey through a by-gone era.

I listened to this book on CD and it was a wonderful experience. Dame Julie read this herself and her reading voice is as elegant as her singing voice used to be. It was an excellent book but I was sorry when it stopped in the early 1960's - as she was off to Hollywood to pair up with Walt Disney on the making of Mary Poppins. I so much wanted it to continue - hopefully she is planning to continue her life story in a second memoir.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

1. Write a short autobiography (2-3 pages) of your own life. Then answer the following questions.
2. What was the most life-changing event that occurred in your life and why?
3. What two people in your story affected you in the most positive way and how?
4. What two people in your life had the most negative affects on you and how did you offset them?
5. What would you have changed about your life to date?

Michelle | 106 comments A few more tasks finished...

For 15.3 - Multiplication I had to read a book with 407 to 457 pages (27*16=432), so I read City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (453 pages); and for the Division section I had to read the 3rd or 7th books in a series (1982/27 is about 73), so I chose Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer.

For 15.4, I read Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and watched Earth, the Disney film, which I really enjoyed.

For Candace's task (25.4), I read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, which was published in 1999, and watched the movie (with the same name), which was released in 2005. I think I liked the book more than the movie as there was a lot of mental anguish that couldn't adequately be realized in the movie. That said, however, the movie was really well done and was just about as difficult to watch as the book was to read. Both are good representations of very serious problems faced by (some) teens. Kristin Stewart (Bella) did a good job as Melinda.
