15.7 - Let's Get Physical - Read Jacob on the elliptical

30.1 - Grub - I want to be a novelist. This is a retelling of New Grub Street about 5 aspiring novelists and the process of getting published (or not).

The Devil Wears Prada - I work in magazine publishing. I had already seen the movie for this, so knew what to expect. But not only is this about what I do, this is actually based on the company i currently work for - so I couldnt get more precise on this task if I wanted to!

message 2407: by Cait (last edited Oct 21, 2009 09:27AM) (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Ok Cynthia - I will apologize in advance because I'm about to be a pain in the butt and shuffle some books around. I'm sorry! But hey, it just proves how versatile these challenges really are. I will try to be as clear as possible, and I'll post a full list of my completed tasks in the following post just in case there are any discrepancies.

I am no longer claiming the points for 10.2 (addiction) and 25.7 (Cindy's 1,2,3). I am moving those books to other tasks. (-35 points)

Now for my updated tasks:

Task 15.5 (foreign language): Kitchen - Banana Yoshimoto (9/9) & Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami (10/15) I loved Kafka and didn't really care for Kitchen.

Task 10.5 (germany): The Reader - Bernhard Schlink (10/18) Excellent book, 5 stars

Task 20.2 (rookie ABC's): Choke - Chuck Palahniuk (9/10)
Dark Places - Gillian Flynn (9/20)
Election - Tom Perrotta (9/27)

Task 25.9 (Diane's self help): Don't Panic Revised Edition Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks - R. Reid Wilson (10/13) & The Sugar Queen - Sarah Addison Allen (9/30)

Task 50 (midway):senses Garden Spells - Sarah Addison Allen (9/5) This was a very sensory book, from the ominous scent of a certain man's cologne that kept appearing in the house to the food that the main character (a caterer) prepared, which is magical in more ways than just taste. Even the physical reactions and sensations that two character have when "together" are other-worldly.
emotions Love Walked In - Marisa de los Santos (10/18) This book had a lot to say about love, familial and romantic: how you can't force love (no matter how much you want to be able to), how it can come into your life at the most unexpected of times and places, and how blood relation and a person's actions/inactions do not necessarily indicate the depth of love they feel for another.
memory Belong to Me A Novel - Marisa de los Santos (10/20) I picked this book because of it's basic premise: a woman embarking on a new phase in her life, moving away from her home and comfort zone to a new and unfamiliar place. My keepsake is a horseshoe with my husband's old 11th ACR unit insignia on it (it hangs on the wall by a red ribbon). When I moved to Ft. Irwin with him, it really was like entering a new world. Not only was it the first time I had ever lived anywhere other than my hometown, but it was my initiation into Army life. It's funny, when I look at it now it's almost hard to remember my life before the Army. I guess I adjusted pretty well. :o)

He and his 4 best friends continue playing together through high school, where they win 3 state championship games and in their senior year win the National Championship. Senses: Vox. (it's latin for voice)the entire book is a conversation, so it is related to hearing and speaking.
Emotion: A Happy Death. the main character believes that he cannot be happy without money...through a rather disturbing action, he acquires money and does live happily...as he is dying from pleurisy, he reflects on his choices and actions and believes that he is dying a happy death. NOT a happy book!
Memory: Tortilla Flat. ...not that i'm THAT old, but reading about Monterey before it was a touristy town reminds me of visiting when i was young and it was less commercial than it is now.

Katie | 4 comments For 50.1 (Minding the World), I read:

I. The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima - Sound participated in this novel almost exclusively through the sounds of the ocean, which reflected the plot action and emotions of the characters. This is a sweet little love story.

II. Poe's Tales of Mystery and Terror by Edgar Allan Poe
Poe's terror is in the waiting, the anticipation of doom, and the lack of any avenue for escape. "The Pit and the Pendulum" was my favorite of the scary stories, but I liked his mysteries, too.

III. To Siberia by Per Petterson
For my keepsake, I chose a couple of rocks I picked up along the Øresund when I was living in Denmark. I used to walk the coast almost every day (usually on my way to the library :P). To Siberia is set in a small town in Denmark on the Jutland peninsula. I lived in a larger town on Zealand, but the book notes (as I did) the central position the coast plays in Danish life. Petterson also does a great job of capturing that characteristic nip in the air of northern port towns and the melancholy induced by the long Scandinavian winters. I was struck by waves of nostalgia.

Beth F | 669 comments I have two 15-pointers to report as finished:

15.5 - I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in September for my face to face book club and today I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire, both by Stieg Larsson.

I'm generally pretty stingy with 5-star reviews and don't usually like books from this genre but I loved both these books and gave them both 5 star ratings. Both books were originally published in Swedish. I can't wait for the 3rd to come out next year and am sad that the author is deceased. :(

15.6 - I read The Knitting Sutra Craft as a Spiritual Practice by Susan Gordon Lydon.

I'm 38 weeks pregnant so have been knitting up a storm for my little girl (to satisfy the second half of the task). I put the finishing touches on one sweater two weekends ago and plan on finishing a second sweater this weekend (unless I miraculously go into labor!) And then I have a third one in the works too but I have to rip out a mistake I can't live with so I've been ignoring it for the past 3-4 weeks...frogging sucks and since I'm pregnant, I can't even console myself with a glass of wine while I'm doing it.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments Wow a lot happens around here when I go away for a couple days - at least 200 posts to go through in this thread alone. Plus 4 more people have finished the challenge which is amazing and several new players have joined in which is also really great. Hopefully I got everything straight with the leaderboard - but if it's not right please do let me know.

I personally managed to finish a few books since I last posted...

Task 10.2 (addiction) - For this task I read Courage of Fear by Barbara Boyer...wow this was an incredibly moving and inspirational story - it was also a very sad story of the aftermath of a decision made out of the desperation of a gambling addict. It has a lot of really poignant statements about life and decisions and love that really struck me as I was reading it. This was the book that the author offered to our group and when she signed my copy she mentioned that a reviewer had compared her to Nicholas Sparks which I found true and coincidentally an event occurs in both this book and At First Sight the Sparks book that I also read for this challenge.

15.10 I finished the teacher/student task by reading
Sex as a Second Language A Novel by
Alisa Kwitney a nice light romance novel (what I needed after the more heavy nature of the other book) - the main character teaches an advanced English As A Second Language course (she's also a former soap star trying to get back into the game after leaving to be married and raise a kid since she getting a divorce from her former co-star husband). I had previously read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane for the student portion - the main character is a PHD student working on her dissertation about witchcraft and the Salem Witch trials - I really enjoyed both of these books as different as they were.

Finally I read Jigs & Reels Stories by Joanne Harris by Joanne Harris - a group of short stories that I really mostly didn't care for - I LOVED the film Chocolat based on the book she wrote but so far I've found that the books she's written have been rather disappointing.

On the mountain sits Moggett (a cat*kind of*).

Not what I had originally planned to read, but then I saw someone talking about this book and I really wanted to re-read it. Then found that it had a cat on the cover!!!

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments I finished the homework task last night (well early this morning) before I went to sleep. I read Going Home by Harriet Evans. It was an interesting story that talks about home and family and communication - its a bit comedy of error kind of thing but it has a happy ending which I love.

My Assignment
2 Part Essay

1)Write an essay describing a situation where a failure to communicate properly with someone changed your life - did you ever get things straightened out.
2)Describe the home you grew up in and the home you live now - compare and contrast.

I take classes through the downtown Oakland YMCA. If you live in or near a big city, a google search will probably turn up someone who teaches Capoeira nearby.

The book was good-it covered a lot of Brazil's modern history, which I didn't know very much about and the author has a pretty lively writing style

M (masanobu) 25.4 (Candace's task) Coraline by Neil Gaiman, and watched the film directed by Henry Selick.

Well, I watched the film first and that made me expect more about the other world. In the film, it has a visual richness that it is lacking in the book. Plus, I found there is a greater development of the relationship between Coraline and the beldam. It gave me the feeling it was a punishment Coraline (kind of) deserved for being really disobedient, whilst in the book, it was simply unfair.
And, although it sounds quite like the contrary, I liked the book as much as the film. And it was even darker and that surprised me. I love Neil Gaiman's ability as a storyteller. It is like reading a modern Perrault.
I recommend both!

Britta (macdeath) *REVISED!*

PJREADS Task:
I. Just Listen - This task was to find a sense, so I chose this book. It's about a girl, who's rich, and a model, but everything's going bad. But she meets a guy, who really loves music. And he tries to get her to listen to his music.
II. Tessa in Love CosmoGirl/Piccadilly Love Stories - In this book the emotion is 'Love'. And not so surprisingly, the main character falls in love >w<
III. One of my friends gave me a (very pretty) empty notebook. When I found it again recently, I found that it was empty, except for the mock-up of a letter I was planning to send to Darren Shan (Which I will never send, because it seems incredibly childish now >w<) Anyway, that's why I chose to read Hell's Heroes

25.2. DONNA JO'S TASK - Find Two Authors Who Are Related By Blood Or Marriage And Read A Book By Each. If By Marriage, It Need Not Be Permanent At The Time The Books Were Written. (In Other Words, The Book(S) Could Have Been Written Before Or After Said Marriage.)
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway (10.20.09). Not too bad a book and I'm finding that I enjoy Hemingway as an adult for some odd reason. I'd swore in high school that I'd never read another Hemingway book, even in college, if I could help it, after having read the Old Man and the Sea. I read some short stories in college and still didn't like his works. It's good after doing the challenge to actually find I have changed my mind.
Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay (10.22.09). Oh I think I enjoyed this second Dexter book even moreso than the first. I can't wait to read the next Dexter book. Not sure it'll fit into the challenge though.

• In Your Post Please Be Sure To State The Relationship Between The Authors.
Jeff Lindsay is married to Hilary Hemingway (also an author), who is the neice to Ernest Hemingway. That would make Lindsay a nephew-in-law to Hemingway.

And tomorrow, I'm all excited to go see The Vampire's Assistant to see how much of the first and second book in the Cirque du Freak series is in it. Then I can claim that task.
