Chuck Conversion by Katherine Howe
#6 Conversion by Katherine Howe

" It’s senior year at St. Joan’s Academy, and school is a pressure cooker. College applications, the battle for valedictorian, deciphering boys’ texts: Through it all, Colleen Rowley and her friends are expected to keep it together. Until they can’t. First it’s the school’s queen bee, Clara Rutherford, who suddenly falls into uncontrollable tics in the middle of class. Her mystery illness quickly spreads to her closest clique of friends, then more students and symptoms follow: seizures, hair loss, violent coughing fits. St. Joan’s buzzes with rumor; rumor blossoms into full-blown panic. Soon the media descends on Danvers, Massachusetts, as everyone scrambles to find something, or someone, to blame. Pollution? Stress? Or are the girls faking? Only Colleen—who’s been reading The Crucible for extra credit—comes to realize what nobody else has: Danvers was once Salem Village, where another group of girls suffered from a similarly bizarre epidemic three centuries ago."

Jen Wow! This one sounds super tricky. I am up for this. Also involved in a few other book clubs though so I will progress as I can.

I'm going to start with a book that intimidates me, which is One Hundred Years of Solitude

Unless it is so horrible I can't get past the first 50 pages, and then I suppose I will have to find something else intimidating. LOL. I make it a rule never to waste time reading terrible books.

message 16: by Jen (new)

Jen Well, I made it through 100 pages of solitude, but 100 years is gonna be a bit much. Reading this has made me think about cultural bias in reading though. I have a degree in Asian Studies (along with my English degree); I started studying Chinese in high school, switched to Japanese mid-way through college, and have never managed to make any sense of any European languages, although I have made stabs at French and Spanish at various points in my life. And it occurs to me that if this novel was set in China during the Opium wars and the main characters were called LiQing, YiQing, and XiQing instead of Jose Arcadio, Arcadio, and Aureliano, I'd have no problem following along with the action, but as it is, I find myself constantly confused by who the heck the author is talking about at any given moment. Is it the big guy with the big penis or the old guy who's losing his mind or the little guy? I don't know. (And what is it with Garcia Marquez and the size of a guy's penis anyway? Conversation for another time, I suppose.) Anyway, time to find something that is intimidating, but not so intimidating that I can't finish it.

Unfortunately, the book that intimidated me turned out to be so intimidating that I couldn't finish it! I tried two different ones from my list and they were both just TERRIBLE! Like, I couldn't get through even 25 pages without falling asleep. And life is just too short. So I seem to be stuck at 11 books. Sigh. If I think I can finish "Jane Eyre" by the 31st, maybe I can get to all 12.
