Govi (4g3dvan1lla) | 14 comments I just started reading 'The Atlantis Gene' by A. G. Riddle yesterday. I won't finish until this weekend. Can I count it, or should I have started the book in 2016? I know, I know. Too legalistic, right?

Benjamin Thomas | 104 comments I'm not sure but I have the same book on my list! Cant wait to read it!

Happy new year!

message 3: by Wombat (new)

Wombat easy way of dealing with this - start a goodreads challnge - read 100 books - and let the goodread's algorithms deal with the issue the same for everyone

(basically if you finish the book in 2016, it counts. Its not that much of a big deal as it only really gives you an extra couple of days... if its giving you more than that you wouldn't meet the 100 books anyway:) )

Yep, ditto what Kenny says. If you finish it in 2016, it counts. Doesn't matter if you read all but the last page today!

Govi (4g3dvan1lla) | 14 comments Thanks for the replies everyone.

@Benjamin: The book is fairly good so far. Not the best I've ever read by no means, but still fun to read and interesting.

Benjamin Thomas | 104 comments Is there any way of figuring out what's the word count of the book we're reading?

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) Go on Amazon.com and look up the book. Scroll down the page and in the books stats it will tell you the word count of the book.

message 9: by Govi (new)

Govi (4g3dvan1lla) | 14 comments If you don't have an electronic version, you'll have to rely on estimation. I've looked for an online database of book data like that and I haven't had any luck. However, I did do a quick study this week (probably for the same reasons as you) to determine how many pages of typed text my writing would amount to and how long it should take. Books on my shelves (fiction only) seem to range from 230 to 400 words per page. The easiest way to go about it is to count the words in 3-5 pages and get an average, then multiply that out for the actual number of pages in your book.
If you happen to have an electronic copy, you might be able to do the same thing by getting an average count per Kindle page, for example. Amazon only lists the page count for some reason.

message 10: by Govi (new)

Govi (4g3dvan1lla) | 14 comments The Atlantis Gene is 133,856 words in case you were wondering.

Cheers!

Timewarp | 6 comments Hi not sure I understand about the word count. Still figuring the site. Do I need to enter the word count some where. Please explain for a newbie

No, not at all. The word count question was a tangent. In order to compete in the reading challenge, all you have to do is mark each book you read as "completed" here on Goodreads.

Diana | 5 comments now that I've joined does that mean you can see the books I read (that I added through goodreads)? or do I need to report it? thanks.

message 17: by Wombat (new)

Wombat Odd addendum to this question - what do collection/anthology books count as? Do we count each of the short stories, or the whole book as one?

I would guess that it counts as one if they have only been published as one..

(question arose as I just finished The Colour of Magic which is actually 4 short stories linked by the same characters - similar to many books by Moorcock)

message 18: by Timewarp (new)

Timewarp | 6 comments Hi All: I have a question about a book I read in 2009. What do I do when I was sent an advanced copy and read it before it was in the stores? If I enter it into the system it looks funny because I read it before it came out. Also know I liked the book but I was wondering can I ever change my rating if I give it a 3 and later think it should be a 4?

That is what I would say, too. I have Mistletoe, Marriage, & Mayhem, which is a collection of shorts - published as one volume, that I will count as 1. I also bought a bundle - the complete Brothers Sinister by Courtney Milan, and I will count those individually as they were initially published individually. I just happened upon a bargain. And I'm a starving artist, so to speak.. :)

Wombat sound reasonable :)

No need to report (unless you want to, in order to discuss the book). Goodreads will silently record your tally throughout the year, then in December, if you've read 100, it will let you know in your year-end tally, which you can share at that time.

Depends how Goodreads tallies them. Usually, the anthology is considered a single book.

ARCs are understood and accepted, so it won't look weird. You can also comment that you were reading an advance copy. And, yes, you can change the rating at any time.

However, note that a book read in 2009 won't count for this year's reading challenge.

message 24: by Timewarp (new)

Timewarp | 6 comments Re Message 24:

I was not planning to count the 2009 book as part of my tally unless I actually read it again. I was just entering books I've read, want to read and are reading. If you would prefer I can hold off on entering books I've read before. Would you like me to not enter any other books?

Timewarp

I buy several multibook bundles. As I read each book in the bundle I enter that on Goodreads. I do not enter the bundle or omnibus title. If there are seven books in the bundle then I want credit for reading seven books, not just one.

No, not all re-reads are fine! Goodreads will update the finish date to this year, so it will count.

message 27: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Cornwell Do audiobooks count? I know Goodreads would count it, but I didn't know if they counted for this.

Yes! They count. Just plug in the print book version if you can't find the audio on Goodreads.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura Andrews | 2 comments OK, so I'm a total newb on Goodreads :D I'm wondering if I'm supposed to add the books I read only to my own personal bookshelf, or to the group bookshelf. HELP!

message 30: by Govi (new)

Govi (4g3dvan1lla) | 14 comments Welcome! You should only have to update your own bookshelf (i.e. 'currently reading' and 'read') and goodreads will keep track of the total for you.

OK. I made a special bookshelf just for this contest; is it fine if I use that one instead of the regular bookshelf?

Yep, just to your own personal bookshelf, so you can verify at year's end that you have 100.
