Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments Welcome to 2016. Tell us what you're reading and why. Just listing the name of the book is a bit drab so be creative.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am starting The Nightingale for a buddy read.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same as Lisa for me :)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am carrying The Fiery Cross over into the new year with about 150 pages to go) but my Steve Martin book has gone onto my STARTED-BUT NOT FINISHED shelf for the time being. I am starting with Peggy and Lisa on The Nightingale today.

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have 2015 leftovers on the go - Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (kindle), The Bazaar of Bad Dreams (library book) and Revolution (audio). Making progress on them all but i need to get a move on as i have 3 buddy reads planned in for January. Eek. Will she do it? Hmmm.

message 6: by Marie (new)

Marie (eiram) | 26 comments Robert Galbraith: Career of Evil. I loved the two previous Cormoran´s very much, for some reason I cannot get into this one as fast - but I am on page 108 so it may well happen :)

message 7: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (missvirginia) | 96 comments I think I'll start the year with the shortest one I have planned, just to get a good start of the year: Le Petit Prince :)

message 8: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I just picked up A Discovery Of Witches from my shelf, I'll switch it off with another book, either A Monster Calls, or The Hawkline Monster for Hide an Seak challenge, and get back to it again.

message 9: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11266 comments I'm starting The Nightingale too, and I still have a couple more on the go.

Marie, I hope you get into Career of Evil soon. Many reviewers didn't like it so much as the other too, but in my opinion it was probably the best of them.

message 10: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm finishing up The Ship of Brides from 2015 and then have to decide what book to start in 2016.

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I am still reading Monster Hunter International,

message 13: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19171 comments I started too many books in 2015 that I did not have time to finish, so I am working on finishing those up before starting anything else. I am reading:
After You
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride
A Study in Scarlet
Uprooted
The Whole 30: The official 30-day guide to total health and food freedom

Looks like I'll be starting out 2016, by wrapping up 2015.

message 14: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I have maybe a couple hours left to complete my path through the paradisio of The Divine Comedy then maybe srart 2016 with something lighter

message 16: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments I am finishing up The Maze Runner for the buddy read and because I have always meant to read them and finally sat down to do it. Then I have two books to pick up at the library. January should be fruitful for reading I am hoping.

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Mariab wrote: "Esther wrote: "I am listening to Eat, Pray, Love for the monthly challenge."

yes I did. This book was one I keep telling myself I should read but keep putting it off. While gophering I realised it was in audio and available at my library so it won. :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Tasha wrote: "I'm finishing up The Ship of Brides from 2015 and then have to decide what book to start in 2016."

What do/did you think of it?

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments I have two books on the go that I'm carrying over from 2015 - The Lost Wife and A Sudden Light. I'm hoping to perhaps finish The Lost Wife today.

message 20: by Debra (last edited Jan 02, 2016 01:33AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm reading a new book in one of my favorite series, Agent Pendergast. I've been following this one for years, and have reread several. The book is Crimson Shore.

message 21: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm reading The Bees, it was for the white covers theme, I could not finish it.
But I'm thinking to drop it (momentarily) and to begin one of the group readings

message 22: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Peggy wrote: "Tasha wrote: "I'm finishing up The Ship of Brides from 2015 and then have to decide what book to start in 2016."

It was interesting but not amazing. I'm giving it 3*. I like stories aboard ships and this was an interesting storyline but I wasn't blown away by it.

message 23: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I started The Good Lord Bird last night for the Hide and Seek challenge. The writing starts off really strong so I have high hopes for this one.

message 24: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'll also be starting Oryx and Crake on audio but have the ebook for backup as well. Some authors I don't tend to do well with audio and Atwood is one of them. I'll try it to get started and see how it goes. This is for the monthly group read.

message 25: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I've picked up the audio of O&C, also, Tasha, I hope it works out, because I doubt I'll have the opportunity to actually read it.

message 26: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm downloading it now. I may get to start it this afternoon for a little bit.

Camilla | 2102 comments Debra wrote: "I'm reading a new book in one of my favorite series, Agent Pendergast. I've been following this one for years, and have reread several. The book is Crimson Shore."

What a coincidence, I'm also reading a book in the same series, Brimstone. Still have many books to go in the series, but I really like it too.

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments That's another series I have to get back to.

message 29: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2102 comments And I started A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson today, finding it hilarious! I'm using it for the geo challenge, due to the animals on cover.

message 30: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments I'm reading 1222 (Hanne Wilhelmsen, #8) by Anne Holt I've heard good things about it.

message 31: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments I finished The Lost Wife this afternoon. This is my 1st book of 2016 and my 1st five star read. What a great way to start the year. I didn't want this book to finish even though it was so heartbreaking.

I'll be starting Monster Hunter International in a bit. This is for my challenge read and a buddy read.

message 32: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments I just finished The Maze Runner which I wanted to read on my own and finally did thanks to the buddy read. I liked it and I am excited to see what others thought.

I have to wait until Tuesday to pick up two books awaiting me at the Library so for now, I think I will read a book of poetry. I am readingChasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter Series. I have seen some of his poems here and there on Pinterest and such, but I am excited to read a collection of them. I have immediately connected with some already.

message 33: by Marie (new)

Marie (eiram) | 26 comments I just finished Career of Evil

What a roller coaster! I first could not get really into it but after a while I hardly could put the book down ! It was very intense - some parts maybe too dark for me .... Amazing book!

message 34: by Lynda (last edited Jan 04, 2016 07:12PM) (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Just finished It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life of Love and War and it was an amazing story. 5 stars. As a photographer (but most certainly not a conflict photographer) it really resonated with me. I have a lot of admiration for what Lynsey Addario lens uncovers.

I'll now begin Black Swan Green for the monthly challenge.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World last night for the buddy read. Absolutely loved it. It was my first Murakami. Now on to another buddy read (and also counts for the monthly challenge) with Monster Hunter International

message 36: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments I finished Chasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter Series last night. I felt like I resonated with quite a few of the poems so I am glad that I read it.

Today I should be picking up my waiting books at the library! I plan to start The Sword of Summer first. Hopefully I can get it done by this weekend and start the other book.

message 37: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments I'm reading Promise of Blood it's a chunky book that I've been putting off for a while. It's so good already.

message 38: by Stephanie (last edited Jan 05, 2016 09:43AM) (new)

Stephanie I have a few books going at the moment. The Remnant, I am liking this series as it progresses.
The Kindness of Strangers, this book I am not liking so much. I did not realize it was part of a series, it is book #6. Maybe I would like it if I had read the other books, I don't know. The story is weird and there is so much jumping around between characters and their story lines, that I am like "what is going on" half of the time, lol.
Lives of the Monster Dogs, So far this book seems very odd. It is about these dogs that have human characteristics such as walking on two legs and they have human hands. I am not sure what to think yet and I am hoping the story gets better.

message 39: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I am apparently continuing being a serial killer this year (not intentionally though).

I'm reading (listening to) Evil at Heart by Chelsea Cain about a real (fictional) female serial killer. It is book 3 of the Gretchen Lowell/Archie Sherriden series. Even though I'm only about 1.5 hours into the audio, I'm really enjoying it.

I started and already finished Thorns, book two of The Frost Chronicles by Kate Avery Ellison. I think it is going to be a really good series which I plan to continue.

I won a GR giveaway copy of Six of Crows and started it last night. It is the first book in a new series by Leigh Bardugo. It came in a couple of weeks ago and I've been looking forward to starting it. I never win anything so I am doubly excited about it! LOL.

message 40: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Nightingale for the buddy read. I gave it 4 stars. It's not the best historical fiction/World War Two novel that I have ever read but it was very enjoyable all the same and a good book to kickoff a new year of reading.

Tomorrow I will start my first book for the Geocaching challenge, Doomsday Book.

Congrats on your giveaway win KimeyDiann! I hope you enjoy it.

message 42: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I finished a couple of 2015 carryovers, Vagabond and If You've Got It, Haunt It.

Vagabond is the second in the Grail Quest trilogy. I loved the first book, The Archer's Tale, but this one went slowly for me. I'll have to find the quote from another book that must explain why I read this one. I'll come back and add it.

I read Haunt It for another group. It's a cozy mystery that was ok, but had a few things that bothered me. Question - for those who drive a stick shift, do you put it in neutral and set the brake when you park? My answer is a big fat NO. Too much of a chance of it starting to roll when I start the car. I can't figure out why the MC did this, let alone why she kept telling us she was doing it.

message 43: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59924 comments I finished A Sudden Light and gave it 5 stars. I'm starting off 2016 with a bang. That's 2 for 2.

The urge to kill hasn't left me yet, so I've started One Foot in the Grave.

My husband has tried to teach me to drive a stick shift several times. I don't quite have the patience for it, but I know when starting the car he said you always press the brake and then the clutch at the same time so it doesn't roll.

Your question made me wonder though, so I asked him. He said he usually leaves it in gear and sets the parking brake in case the brake were to fail for some reason. But if you are on level ground, neutral would be fine as long as the parking break is set.

message 45: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Jan 06, 2016 08:19AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11266 comments My husband and I drive a stick shift car (that's how we learned actually) and I agree with Kimey's husband. That's how we do it. Neutral + parking break on level ground. Gear + parking break if not. I'd add that the first option is the most common in South America (where we learned to drive) and the second one is the choosen way here at the US.

message 46: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I always leave in gear. Never use parking brake unless it will be left running which is never done unless on flat ground. Most of the parking brakes are junk I've been around

message 47: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Leaving the car in gear is a habit for me now, and it's too uneven around here (WV) to not roll.

I'm listening to Uprooted and overall it's enjoyable. The narrator is ok, but not grabbing me and pulling me into the story. That makes the book seem too long, but I think I'd feel the same way about the written form. There are a lot of elements of the book I like, it's a fantasy wonderland :)

I was going to say, yes, I know a lot of people who do that... but Sandra beated me on the explanation...

The narrator reviews at audible were horrible or else I was gonna give it a go last month. I passed

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation for the month's challenge, and also Bloodsucking Fiends, which is hilarious!!!
(I followed Almeta's rec for the last one)
