Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I'm about halfway into The Dark but I'm not liking it much. Are there any Herbert novels you've liked better that I should try?

I haven't yet read the sequels, but I do have them.

I liked The Fog as well.

I'm pretty sure I have a copy of Sepulchre actually. I'll have to dig it out.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks :)

For my first by him I have reserved The Secret of Crickley Hall, because I think it sounds good and creepy.

David Haynes | 3257 comments My first James Herbert was Magic Cottage. I thought it was great. Ghosts of Sleath is good too. The Secret of Crickley Hall is also one if my favourites.

Kyle Scott | 17 comments I gotta recommend The Ghosts of Sleath. Absolutely love that book. The Magic Cottage drips with atmosphere, too.
On a more hardcore front, The Fog and The Rats Trilogy are pretty nasty.
You can't really go wrong with Herbert, although his last book, Ash, does sadly test the patience a little bit imho
