Growing up I have always been aware of this smaller, less important figure some men have of women and some women have of themselves. I used to get touchy about any gender discrimination - even in primary school - that occurred and would often find myself less popular with any boys and some girls just because I liked ICT and Math (which were apparently male subjects). I've been lucky enough to be put on Girls into Engineering and hope to pursue Software Engineering/It Consultancy, the industry is dominated by males at over 90%.
As I got older I became more aware of the feminist community - my sister being a feminist and Amnesty International fundraiser. And although some people think feminism doesn't exist in the UK anymore, it does.
Everyday I see examples of gender inequality. Boys who expect girls to do things for them that they don't want to do. Girls being expected to send and post perfect photos of themselves in skimpy clothing and believe me it's happening to younger people every year. It's worrying.
When I heard about #heforshe I was very happy and the support it's had has been incredible. Gender Equality must be achieved everywhere, it's not fair, females have just a much right as males.
This is why I'm a feminist and I want to do something about gender inequality, thank you Emma for working with UN Women to create this feminist book club which I look forward to engaging in.
In the past I have read some great books on feminism Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism - my favourite being ain't i a woman. It is more about civil rights than modern feminism but I still think that it represents the rights we have.
If anyone has any views they would like to express about gender inequality in teens and students I would love to talk about it, as I would love to launch a campaign within my school.
Thank you for reading.
