message 9: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Downer (kristindowner) I find it very hard to keep up with the threads. It seems people are adding topics, many for nothing to do with the purpose of this group, and it's unorganized. Wouldn't it be better for there to be set topics only by moderators or Emma to control the number of threads? I can't even find the conversations that have to do with the book.

It's just a bit frustrating that some can't enjoy the purpose of this club because of the openness for posting to threads and the sheer amount of threads there are.

Ash | 155 comments Kristin wrote: "Wouldn't it be better for there to be set topics only by moderators or Emma to control the number of threads? "

Just imagine what would these threads, created by moderators or Emma, turned into. If there would be no another place for someone to say something they want to say, nothing could stop them from saying it in the wrong place. So our very few topics will immediately become a mess with no possibility to discuss anything.

Anyway, this is the policy of Goodreads: everyone inside of the group can create a topic. So it seems like we just can't restrict an access to this functionality. But in the end, this is a good thing.

The Librarian OT (thelibrarianot) | 35 comments Hello, you moderators are doing a seriously awesome job and I'm loving that this book club page is becoming much more organised.

I recently started a new post about sharing blogs. I posted in the 'helpful resources' section but for some reason it's not there and instead in the 'general' section. Anyway you guys can shift it over for me?

Peace, Tara

message 22: by Hallie (last edited Jan 27, 2016 07:45AM) (new)

Hallie (inkyhallie) I'm pleased with the hard-work, but if you don't mind, I'll just suggest a few things.

Personally, I found it rather overwhelming to post and interact in this group. The number of members and the number of threads are not letting me break my shell. I suggest a couple of ice breakers to get started.

I'd also like to suggest a 'Group Directory' for organisation. Whilst it would be hard to maintain and update every thread every single day, it might help reduce the number of duplicate threads. I suggest making such a directory by allowing volunteers to make one post with a particular folder assigned to each. They can update their post when they are free. (I'm not very good at explaining, but here is an example, albeit I haven't allowed different members to do it.) Each post can be for a particular folder, and each time new topics are made in a particular folder, that particular post must be updated. I can elucidate this further if it isn't clear enough.

However, I'm not sure how pragmatic it is, but I'm hoping it will help.

message 23: by Lene (new)

Lene Does this mean that "Announcements" is where I will find out which book is next? Or is there a list of books and months somewhere else?

We don't yet have a pre-determined schedule of books that we will be reading, and this is still in process as far as how books will be chosen and when. This group has grown so fast, and there are nearly 1,000 books suggested by our members (and counting!). Most likely, the next book will be announced in the Announcements section :)

message 25: by Lene (new)

Lene Thank you, Katelyn!

message 26: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaashlee) It would be nice to have some notice of what the next book will be. I see the current book is supposed to be completed tomorrow. Then we would have some time to get the next book.

Thanks,

message 27: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelleturnerismyname) | 28 comments Should we expect books to be announced the first day of a new month? Or around then? I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement for the second book. I've probably checked the announcements like 5 times a day for the past 4 days.

Also, will there be more formal discussions for other books? With this first one the group sort of just ran with it, which has been awesome, and some very lively and interesting thoughts/opinions and debates have occurred, but the way the group is described, it sounded like a more formal discussion would be posted or something. However this free forum has given power to the people, which is cool.

I totally understand this group has blown up and it has been a lot to manage. I am just curious about where it is going and what is coming next. Cheers!

message 28: by Mika (new)

Mika | 3 comments I have the same question as Michelle: when will the February book be announced? I've been checking the group every day for the last few days hoping to see an update. Thanks!

message 29: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaashlee) Is Emma choosing the next book?

wooop okay!

message 34: by Roxy (new)

Roxy (bookishplanss) | 6 comments the changes are great! can there be a topic on each month's new book? I'm not sure which book we're reading for February.

message 35: by Kressel (new)

Kressel Housman | 436 comments I don't know if this is the place to make suggestions, but I want to say that today I attended an OSS meet-up in NYC, and I had a wonderful time, but before I got there, I happened to be talking to a mother of a third grade girl and told her where I was going. She was interested and said her daughter is a big Emma Watson fan. She also said that her own mother started a book club at her daughter's school for those kids who were more inclined to sit alone reading during lunch rather than playing tag or whatever. The club is so popular, it's twice a week instead of once, and its members are both girls and boys.

Could OSS create a children's division? One of my other Goodreads clubs has a children's plus an adult read every month, so why not here? It may be too late for a March book, but how about April?

I've noted your suggestion Kressel, I'll make sure it is discussed.

message 37: by Kressel (new)

Kressel Housman | 436 comments Thanks. Of course, not every parent lets her kid on the Internet, including the mother with whom I had this idea, so that's going to be a hurdle to work around.

Kressel Housman | 436 comments Unless you create a mother/child thread or mentor/mentee thread and we read the books along with the kids.

message 39: by Elena (new)

Elena (helen2u) I'm not a mod but I have to point it out. Remember! Stop removing the books from the Bookclub's bookshelf.

If you started reading The color purple today don't modify the book's rating and info from the bookclub's shelf. It's the end of the month, and the book is considered to have been read by the majority. That for all books that are and will be picked as book of the month.

Obviously that the January and February picks are staying marked as ''READ'', and so on throughout the year.

If you read Gloria Steinem's MY LIFE ON THE ROAD or THE COLOR PURPLE by Alice Walker, add their status and progress on your profile. If you need help to figure things out message anyone, a mod, and all help out.

Until the next book is announced, The Color Purple should remain on the "Currently Reading" shelf. It will move to the "Read" shelf when it is replaced by the March pick.
