Jen | 1545 comments I have a suggestion. Admins can limit the number of topics seen on the homepage under each folder. Probably doesn't matter yet, but as people keep adding threads, the homepage will start to look really cluttered and will be hard to sort through. There is a setting where you can control the number of topics seen and folders seen on the homepage. For example, at 1001 we set that limit to 3 (that may be a bit low but we have lots more folders). Members can obviously still check those other topics but the people who visit the homepage would only see those topics that are in the top 5/10/etc of recently posted topics.

Also, you probably know this but you can lock topics to comments so if you won't want people post reviews or threads in certain places you can lock them.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Limiting the number of topics is already on our radar and we plan to limit them in the coming weeks. However, we decided to start with all of them showing as members come to the group and get associated with the structure and processes. I can already tell that the individual challenge folder will be quite unwieldy!

We do also know that we can lock threads, but are starting with them unlocked in case people have general thoughts, comments, or questions (especially at the beginning) and then if we have problems as we go along we can ratchet up the control. We seldom had to lock threads on Shelfari and are hoping to not have to do that here.

Thanks for the great suggestions! It is nice to know that we are at least aware of the options and are considering some of the same controls as other successful groups.

Keep the suggestions coming if there are more! We are all still learning and I know that I only know a portion of what is out there!

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments Jen and the admins probably already know this, but I thought it might be helpful to others. If all of the threads on the home page are too cluttered for you, you can click on the triangle next to the folders to hide the long list of threads in that folder and then click the triangle again to open it and see the threads when you are ready. This only changes it for you, not for everyone.

Great tip, Cora!

So, let's say I am not too interested in seeing the long list of footnotes threads on my PBT homepage, then I can click the arrow to hide them and simply go into the folder when there is new messages I want to read.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments Also ... at the top (same line as DISCUSSION BOARD on the far right you can click "UNREAD" and you'll get only those posts with a new/unread post. Then you can go through them one by one. If you aren't interested at all in a thread just ignore it and at the bottom of your "unread" list you'll see a link to "mark all as read"

BE CAREFUL ... you want to be sure you've looked at ALL the pages of new posts before you click that ... because "mark all as read" will clear ALL the posts, not just that page of posts.

Another excellent tip and suggestion!

We will need to restrict the number of topics and probably sooner rather than later, but we did want to people to see what was going on at first.

I like that BC and Cora are giving these tips on how to personalize what you see!

I like this option! Thank you for this!
