It's time to start thinking about fun tasks for the Spring Challenge. The bonus theme is "A Year of Art: Pop Art"

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of spring. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes, they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10, and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until February 11. Spring tasks will begin to be posted on February 11. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Daphne (daphnesm) | 486 comments My mind actually misread pop art as pop tart...

...so I came up with this one.

Read a book that has one of the words from the The 27 Best Pop-Tart Flavors list. The word can be found in the title, sub-title, or series name.

Sam F | 205 comments What about 2 books that have complementary colours either both in the title or both on the cover? Complementary colours are ones that are opposite each other on the colour wheel - like red/green or blue/orange - colours that pop!

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3682 comments We almost have to have a "read a book by an author whose initials can be found in ANDY WARHOL!

Also, not sure how to do it, but for a group of ten, why not somehow use the names of the top ten artists or the names of some of their works. This list ranks the artists, and also mentions two or three paintings for each. http://www.ranker.com/list/famous-pop...

Also, maybe covers with spring flowers on? Or the name of a spring flower (crocus, daffodil, tulip, snowdrop, narcissus, bluebell, etc) in the title.

6th March is Mother's day in the UK. I think it's 8th May in some other countries, but both would fit in this challenge.

Towel day, 25th May, celebrates Douglas Adams. Maybe either a book with the genre Science Fiction or Fantasy; or author initials in DOUGLAS ADAMS or DON'T PANIC, or even find a cover with a towel on it!

St George's Day, 23rd April - maybe Fantasy genre, or covers with knights or dragons on or titles with Knight (and Dame) or Dragon in.

Paula S (paula_s) | 642 comments Some pop artists were inspired by comic books. Read a comic book or graphic novel. Alternative: read a book with a cover inspired by comic books.

A Debut Novel

Meg (megscl) | 2469 comments A lot of pop art references politics and/or advertisements; read a book with business or politics as genre.

Similar to Daphne's pop tart idea (which I love) - one of the most famous pop paintings is Warhol's Soup, read a book with a word from one of Campbell's soup flavours https://www.campbells.com/campbell-so...

I also think there must be a way to use goodreads POPular feature - e.g. books most read this week

Taking another meaning of 'pop artist' read a book by an author who shares a name with one of the top 100 pop music artists http://www.billboard.com/artists/top-...

message 8: by Catie (new)

Catie | 185 comments A task to remember David Bowie, surely?

..and while we're at it, one for Alan Rickman?

message 9: by Marcene (new)

Marcene (mj13) | 92 comments A task that plays off the saying "April showers bring May flowers".
Maybe a cover with rain showers or flowers

Or "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb" Maybe a title that contains the word lion or lamb.

message 10: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments I second the David Bowie and Alan Rickman tribute tasks. Those two were life changers, so I hope we can do something with their memories.

The version I know adds March winds to the beginning of that, so perhaps add covers with storm clouds, or wind in the title.

message 12: by Whitnie (new)

Whitnie | 280 comments March 20 is the vernal equinox where the earth and the Sun appear to cross the celestial equator, heading northward. To some people this is also known as Ostara which is a celebration of spring, life, fertility, and the return of new growth. In celebration of this holiday read a book by an author that is totally new to you or a self-help book.

message 13: by Lola (last edited Feb 03, 2016 02:40PM) (new)

Lola | 283 comments Andy Warhol can inspire so many tasks! In addition to those mentioned above, here a few more ideas:

Cover task: Andy Warhol was famous for his works with repeated images. Read a book with a cover that shows repeated images.

Andy Warhol produced and managed the rock band The Velvet Underground. Read a book about a musician or band famous during that same time period (mid 60s-mid 70s) when The Velvet Underground was active. Note: the musician/band can still be active today but must have been part of the music scene during the stated time period.

Andy Warhol is the man behind the quote, "In the future, everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame"
Read a book written by or about a reality TV star

Andy Warhol's studio was called The Factory. Read a book, either fiction or non-fiction, featuring a factory or the manufacturing of a product.

message 14: by Lola (new)

Lola | 283 comments In the early 1960s, Roy Lichtenstein, one of the most famous artists of the Pop Art period, reproduced masterpieces by Cézanne, Mondrian and Picasso Lichtenstein continued to revisit this theme later in his career with works such as Bedroom at Arles that derived from Vincent van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles.

Taking a cue from Lichtenstein, read a book that is a retelling of classic. Include a link to the classic book that inspired the retelling that you chose.

message 15: by Lola (new)

Lola | 283 comments The Romans did not use sequential numbers for calendar dates. Instead, they counted back from three fixed points of the month: the Nones (5th or 7th, depending on the length of the month), the Ides (13th or 15th), and the Kalends (1st of the following month). The Ides occurred near the midpoint, on the 13th for most months, but on the 15th for March, May, July, and October. In honor of the Ides of March, choose a book that was published in a year ending in one of these fixed points eg 1965, 1997, 2015

message 16: by Oceane (new)

Oceane Montanea | 121 comments Read a book where a character has the name of a flower. (Rose, Daisy, etc)

Read a book with butterflies or bees on the cover.

Read a book containing all the letters of SPRING on the title.

message 17: by Whitnie (new)

Whitnie | 280 comments Beltane is a festival held on May 1 to celebrate the beginning of summer. Rituals were performed to protect the crops and the cattle and special protective bonfires were held. Read a book with the word FIRE in the title.

message 18: by Tammy AZ (new)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 1211 comments Keith Haring was a pop artist whose work is associated with the AIDS movement. Mr. Haring died of the disease. Read a book about AIDS or some other epidemic or a book with a character who is battling the disease.

Jasper Jones is known for his flag art. Read a book with a flag on the cover.

The pop art movement started in the 1950s and took off on the 1960s. Read a book published in one of those decades or a book set in one of those decades.

message 19: by Whitnie (new)

Whitnie | 280 comments A couple people mentioned task ideas related to Alan Rickman and David Bowie...what a great idea!

Alan Rickman is an incredible actor who is know for many roles but in particular roles in which his is the villain like the Sheriff of Nottingham, Severus Snape, and Hans Gruber. Read a book where the Villain is the protagonist.

David Bowie had an alter ego known is Ziggy Stardust. Read a book where the first letter of each word in the title can be found in Ziggy Stardust.

message 20: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 486 comments If we do a David Bowie one, I'd love for it to be from Bowie's list of 100 favorite books. I can't think of a better way to remember and honor him and his love of literature and learning.

Pam (bluegrasspam) Spring is the time when animals come out of hibernation. Read a book with an animal on the cover or in the title.

message 27: by Paige (new)

Paige (paigeawesome) | 39 comments Pop surrealism is a popular subgenre of pop art (Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose magazines are dedicated to it)--maybe a book that lists "surrealism/surrealist/surreal" in its genre?

message 28: by Terri FL (new)

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments Andy Warhol painted so many interesting subjects. Here seems to be a complete list. How about a book about one of the things he painted.

message 29: by Whitnie (new)

Whitnie | 280 comments To build in the idea of spring being the time animals come out of hibernation. A task could be to read a book where an animal (real or mythical) has an important role or relationship with the main character.

message 30: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4448 comments Both Easter and Passover fall during this time period. Read a book with a main page genre RELIGION

message 31: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) For college basketball fans, Spring means March Madness! Read a book with alliteration in the title (consecutive words) or author's first & last name.

message 32: by Nick (last edited Feb 11, 2016 09:24AM) (new)

Nick (doily) | 3397 comments Spring is a magical time of year, but it is not the spooky surreality of autumn. Rather, it is the reality of the renewal of life. So read a book with "Magical Realism" as a GR genre.

message 33: by Lola (last edited Feb 29, 2016 08:49PM) (new)

Lola | 283 comments March 14 is Pi Day.
A few ideas:

Read a book with "pi" or "pie" in the title, either standing alone or as part of a word. If part of a word, letters must appear in order.

Read a book where 3, 1 or 4 can be found in the publication year or number of pages

March 14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday. He won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921 and was known for his work in physics and philosophy. In honor of Einstein, read a book with the genre or subgenre of physics, science, engineering or philosophy or read a book by a Nobel Prize winner.
