Briar Rose | 152 comments Can anyone recommend some good audiobooks set in Norway, or about Norway? I'd love anything translated from Norwegian to English too!

HJ The first one I thought of is a Dick Francis thriller called Slay Ride. I don't think it's one of his best, but it's still good.

Louise | 48 comments Well these are all translated from Norwegian to English :-) I read them in Danish, but I found them all available on Audible in English.

Older Stuff:
there are various plays by Henrik Ibsen - I quite enjoy his plays, then there's Hunger by Knut Hamsun from 1890 by Hamsun, it's serious stuff, but one of the great classics.

Newer Stuff:
My Struggle Book 1 by Karl Ove Knausgård - Knausgård is one of the most talked about authors in Scandinavia because of his daring approach to society and literature. I think his books are very interesting.

Jostein Gaarder is an option Sophie's World A Novel about the History of Philosophy by Jostein Gaarder & The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder

Jo Nesbø is an option if you like crime fiction - I haven't read his books, but a lot of people like them.

Per Petterson is very popular, Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson and Ashes in My Mouth, Sand in My Shoes Stories by Per Petterson - I think he writes well, but his book are somewhat bleak.

Patricia (pjaye) | 447 comments The only one I know is Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller.
I bought this for my dad and he liked it, then to my surprise my mother read it as well and said she enjoyed it, but that was the paper version.
The audiobook is available at Audible, but I haven't listened to it.

PerfectCupOfTea | 2 comments I'm Norwegian, and pretty much any book translated from Norwegian has a Norwegian setting :)
What kind of genre are you looking for?

Janice (jamasc) | 1185 comments Any of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series are great. Unfortunately, not all of the books in the series are available on audible (at least in Canada they aren't). The first book that I listened to was The Snowman narrated by the great Robin Sachs which is book 7 of the series. I then listened to book 8, The Leopard. I went back to the beginning and filled in the rest of the series on ebook even though there were others in the series available.

Margaret | 316 comments I thought of one considered a classic, Kristin Lavensdatter by Sigurd Undset, Much to my surprise Audible doesn't have it but I bet Librivox does. I read it long ago at my husband's insistence. I think I thought it difficult but very worthwhile.

Margaret | 316 comments PS. It comes to mind because my best friend has just discovered it and is insisting that I read it again. My eyes are tired so I will be looking for an audio version.

Lee Howlett | 363 comments If you like thrillers/mysteries, I enjoyed The Hunting Dogs by Jørn Lier Horst and narrated by Saul Reichlin. It's one of the William Wisting series. I would definitely listen to another in the series.

Anything light. All my library seems to carry is bleak Norwegian crime fiction. I have no objection to reading it, but I'd like a bit of variety! :)

I'll second Kristin Lavrensdatter if you can find an audio version. I'm about a third of the way reading the tree book and love it.

Chrissie | 1529 comments The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck and Out Stealing Horses y Per Petterson are two. Both are good! Steinbeck's is very good. We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance is fantastic.

PerfectCupOfTea | 2 comments @ Briar Rose:

Yes, right now a vast majority of the books published here are either crime, how-to, biographies, or WWII-related books :'( Which is probably why we read so many translated books here.

I found this article on Norwegian authors: http://lithub.com/five-great-norwegia...

However, these are not avalable as audiobooks, I'm afraid. You can find some books/ebooks by Norwegian authors in English on Amazon,- Erlend Loe, Knut Nærum, Hanne Ørstavik, Bergljot Hobæk Haff, Per Petterson, Lars Saabye Christensen, Roy Jacobsen, Anne B. Ragde.

Sadly I can't find any translated books by Gert Nygårdshaug, Thure Erik Lund, nor Reidar Karlsen :/

Jostein Gaarder has only one book on Audible, even if he's written many wonderful books, including The Solitaire Mystery. I guess we just have to wait for more to come :/

Goodreads also has a list of popular books by authors you can browse: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Another possibility is Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller, on Audible (not Norwegian author, though).

My personal favorites are The shame by Bergljot Hobæk Haff, Gone with the Woman by Erlend Loe, and The Solitaire Mystery. I've also heard wonderful things about Gert Nygårdshaug's Mengele zoo and The Daughters of Egalia by Gerd Brantenberg :)

Good luck!!!

Thank you! What a great list. Thank you for figuring out what is available in audio. I'll see what I can get from the library and audible. It looks like I might have to venture into print to read some of the best though :)

Chrissie | 1529 comments Briar Rose, all those mentioned in my message 12 are available at Audible, except I cannot check which countries/member have access to them.
