A book represents a country if at least two of the following are true:
A) Author is born in the country
B) Author's nationality is of the country
C) Book takes place primarily in the country (at least 75%)
Choose your books based on the countries that border these Waterways of the World. You can use either the links here to see those countries or use this spreadsheet.
1. Pacific Ocean
2. Atlantic Ocean
3. Caribbean Sea
4. Mediterranean Sea
5. Indian Ocean (countries in right side panel)
6. South China Sea
7. Baltic Sea (Border countries, not drainage countries)
8. Black Sea (countries in right side panel)
9. Philippine Sea
10. Amazon basin (countries in right side panel)
11. Rhine River Basin (countries in right side panel)
12. The Nile River Basin (countries in right side panel)
13. The Yellow Sea (see map on right)
14. The Sea of Japan (see map on right)
15. Adriatic Sea (countries in right side panel)
16. North Sea (countries in right side panel)
Each waterway can only be used once. When a country borders more than one waterway, it will be used only for the one you designate and does not use up one of your options for the other(s).
Books may be read in any order.
You can complete Waters of the World twice, but no country may be used more than once.
Scoring:
15.1-15.6: 15 points
15.7-15.8: 25 points (or 10 point bonus)
15.9-15.10: 35 points (or 20 point bonus)
Bonuses:
100 point for completing Waters of the World
25 point bonus if all books were originally written in languages other than English
50 point bonus if all books originally published in 1991 or earlier
While not required, you may feel free to post and share your plan in the Itinerary Folder.
A few notes:
I. You cannot claim regular style points for any book you read for Waters of the World (nor do the WotW tasks count as combo style points for Reading with Style's 10 and 20 point tasks).
II. All books read for this sub-challenge must be at least 100 pages, based on the most popular English-language print edition.
III. Please be aware that cookbooks, illustrated guides, and graphic novels are not allowed for the sub-challenge. Also, books designated as "YA", "Assignment", or "Juv" by the Brooklyn Public Library with a Lexile score less than 800 are not allowed.
