Fishface | 18861 comments This is Gary Krist:

He's rather famous for burying Barbara Jane Mackle alive in a box as part of a super-odd kidnapping scheme. He's also the author of a book, Life: The Man Who Kidnapped Barbara Mackle.

This is Gary Krist:

He's the author of multiple history books on all kinds of interesting subjects, like Empire of Sin: A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans and The White Cascade: The Great Northern Railway Disaster and America's Deadliest Avalanche.

They look kind of alike, enough to make me wonder if they are the same person. Does anyone know what became of the first Gary Krist? He should have been out of prison long ago...

Here one with the "criminal" Gary with a beard. Looks even more like the other Gary.

Found this of an older "criminal" Gary. Very different looking aren't they? Darn.

Couldn't seem to get this one to post so I have the link. On murderpedia there is another shot of when he is older.

Fishface | 18861 comments Gary the kidnapper's face seems to change a great deal over time. Blunt nose, sharp nose; flappy ears, tucked ears. Light-brown hair, dark-brown hair. Light eyes, dark eyes. And here's the thing: the prominent-author Gary Krist, while not as wildly variable, always stays in the same visual ballpark as the kidnapper. And in some photos he appears to have black eyes, but in a different light they are clearly blue.

Fishface | 18861 comments They have the same kind of forehead wrinkles, too.

Shelley | 1225 comments I noticed that about the forehead too! Same pattern of wrinkles.

Fishface | 18861 comments OK, I looked at Murderpedia -- could not imagine why he would be listed there! -- and WTF do I see? He confessed to killing several people but didn't get charged???? So was he lying? He sure doesn't look like the prominent author Gary Krist any more, so that clears that up.

But who are these people he claims to have killed? Maybe I'm too hot-blooded on this subject, but why would they not prosecute? Oh, I know, I know < grumpus > probably not enough evidence. < /grumpus >

Shelley | 1225 comments He was paroled after serving 10 years. Krist was granted a pardon so that he could become a physician. He practiced medicine in Chrisney, Indiana until his medical license was revoked in 2003.

Imagine that! Obviously smart enough to be the author.

Then he got caught drug smuggling and jailed. Then in 2012 they revoked Krist's supervised release for violation of his probation. He had left the country without permission, sailing to Cuba and South America on his sailboat. Judge Granade sentenced Krist to 40 months imprisonment.

So he must be in prison now.

I take it this was before there were laws about making profits from your crimes

Fishface | 18861 comments Yes, this kidnapping was almost 10 years before anyone had thought up the Son of Sam law.
