Who do you think is the most sympathetic character in the novel and why?

I think Claudia and her sister were the most sympathetic characters in regards to Pecola. They had compassion for her and were the only ones who were trying to help her.

I think the most sympathetic character is Claudia because she truly cared and loved Pecola.

Claudia and her sister are certainly the characters with the most reason and gentleness in their souls. The character that elicited the most sympathy from me is Percola. I wanted to swoop her up and take her home.

I felt the most sympathy for Pecola. This poor child never knew love and lived a lonely life. Adults were all around her and no one stooped in to help her in her situation. It is just so sad and tragic.

Claudia (and her sister), especially because we hear Claudia's viewpoint and therefore can accept both her good and bad choices.

I definitely felt sorry for Pecola, but because she wasn't speaking for herself as a narrator, and because she chose the creepy blue eyes over trying to survive/thrive as herself, I lost some of my sympathy for her.

I agree, Claudia and Frieda were the most sympathetic characters.
