Emma | 25 comments Ok working on a story/ novel, possibly just for myself based on something that has happened to someone I know. Do I use real place names or make them up? This would include names of prisons etc

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments Just my opinion here, but I'd go ahead and fictionalize the name of the prison you're focusing on...you just never know. Best to come up with another name; and that way you can exercise your imagination, too.

I think leaving the names of locations or cities intact is fine.

Jenn Sternshein (bookdorkjenn) I would change the name and the location but pick a location and prison you know a lot about so everything is factual. you may have to research the location and prison. that way you don't have to ever worry about who reads it and gets mad that the book is about them, just adds a layer of confidentiality. I know you said it's probably just for yourself but you never know. Although, I don't know your situation and if the people its about want you to write this, this is just my opinion. Decide what seems right for you.
