Starting up the discussion on the Kite Runner - I actually have read this but years ago and kind of forget it so planning on rereading it. Hope you all can join!

Luella | 97 comments Excited for this one! I'm waiting for an e-copy from the library once that happens I'll jump right in on it.

message 3: by Melanie (new)

Melanie I haven't gotten a copy of this yet, but i am working on it.

Luella | 97 comments I'm still waiting for my e-copy. :( I'd drag my butt to the library to get a papercopy but I have a few too many books out right now as it is and I was hoping to have the electronic one so I could read it on the go kind of thing...

Brady Parkin It looks like you can read this one online for free at thehazeleyacademy.com so that is a thought if you want to try that.

Jackie When this book first came out, it was suggested at one of my book clubs to be read for the next meeting. I clearly remember thinking that I didn't want to read a book about 2 boys in Afghanistan. Now it is one of my all time favorite books! That has made me MUCH more open to reading books that I think I may not like. An important (to me) quote from the book is, "There is only one sin, and that is theft, ... when you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth." Hope you enjoy this book too!

I tried the link and a search for it but I couldn't find it. Do you have a direct link to that because I'd be game! I have two people in line in front of me on the e-copies from the library and its taking forever. :(

Ashley (anicholsb) | 24 comments I really loved this book and it's one that I think will stay with me for a very long time (I'm not sure whether that's a good thing!). There were so many emotions and so much pain which was passed along to the reader through amazing writing. I think that the mark of a great writer is their ability to make the reader feel and this author did that well.

“I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”

Thanks!

I totally agree, Ashley. I really felt something when I read this, and it seemed like I was looking through a window into a different world that's been so skimmed over in the media. That, I think, is why I was most moved by reading it.

Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the July 2021 Catch-up selection. This month we will be reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini for the 2nd time.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Is this a first-time read, or a re-read of an old favorite? What are your expectations in picking this book up?

I've had this book on my TBR shelf for years, so I'll be joining this group read. Such a popular book. High expectations!

Heather Milne | 12 comments Hi, I am new here and when I saw you were reading this book I knew I had to join in. This has been on my bookshelf for so long. I am really hoping it is as good as everyone says!

message 17: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary | 2 comments I must admit, the title of this group hooked me. I've been working on fixing the problem (read Les Miserables, most of Dickens in the last two years). I am ready to leap into more. It's never too late to grow up and see the value of good books, right? I, too, have had the Kite Runner on my bookshelf...collecting dust. I suppose the binding will crackle when I open it!

Kailin Lu | 1 comments I finally read The Kite Runner at 27! No idea how it never made it onto a school reading list when I was younger... it truly moved me in a special way that I wasnt expecting. I totally get the hype now. I read A Thousand Splendid Suns soon after and also loved it but still like TKR more. Excited for everyone here to experience it!!

Alana | 1 comments Hello! Newbie here. Found this on sale today and grabbed it. I've wanted to read it for awhile, so excited to jump in.

message 20: by Mary-Faith (new)

Mary-Faith | 85 comments I'm a little late, but planning on starting the book this week! And hopefully finishing by the end of the month. :) I've been hearing good things about The Kite Runner for years and actually picked it up at a used book sale about two years ago, so this is the perfect motivation for me to finally read it.

Mary | 2 comments I finished today and am glad for this group suggesting it. The timing of this story with current events is perfect. I don't think I would have enjoyed the book as much had a I read it years ago.
