This thread is where you can chat about all things PIFM, ask questions and once books have been read, review your selected reads. A complete free for all.

PLEASE NOTE:

PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Thanks.

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments @Patricia....All favourite authors of mine in your choices thus month! You simply can't go wrong with that line up. I will have to figure out which one to vote for. Tough choice.

message 3: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) @Amy --- I have to agree with @Melanie. If you read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, you're going to have to slog through the first 100-150 page before it starts to read like a thriller.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Kirsten - fist I thought easy one, of course A Tale of Two Cities, but than I thought let's check out those I don't know and now I can't decide between three books since Cry, the Beloved Country & The Story of Edgar Sawtelle seam to be great too, grrrr. And what now ;-)

Amy - you're not making it easier ;-) I still love Victor (The Killer) and The Runaway Jury. "A" is for Alibi is one of these books I wish I already had and could sink my teeth into it :-) A really tough choice.

Melanie - that was most likely the issue. I gave too early up on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo :-) Perhaps I'll give it another go - sometimes ;-)

message 5: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Mandy - I already started to fear the books on your list are so not my cup of tea since I didn't like the first three a little bit. Hope came with #4 but the last one (Kill For Me) was the best - I love the series.
Currently I'm one book behind our group schedule from the RS-group series read - but it's not really an issue. This month is the little novella planned and I was toying with the idea to push this one anyway into May to count it against the Folk in Uniform challange from a different group. I even hope to pull the next one from June into this month too :-)

message 6: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Melanie, can you ever have too many reading challenges? Let's start a challenges addicts thread - I'm sure we can trade some challenge ideas ;-)

message 7: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 313 comments I'm Daisy and I'm a challenges addict too. I won't even go into details but I have an elaborate system for keeping my challenges ordered.

message 8: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) You won't even believe how many challenges I'm doing! It's scary.

Hey, do we have 2 Danas in the PIFM?

message 9: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) You can go here to pick at my status of challenges: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I think I have a good shot at getting the PopSugar done this year. I'm so glad I found that we have a group on Goodreads that just focuses on it.

I agree absolutely! I stuck with this one because it was so popular ...

Wow...I think a challenges thread is a GREAT idea. I currently have one going elsewhere simply because that group had a discussion thread committed to challenges...it made it easy for me to keep, them in one place, but I am flipping between that group and this one as really there is not enough time for me to commit to many groups

So glad I'm not alone. I was saying to Agnieszka that I have an actual dedicated thread to "Melanie D's 2016 Challenges"

Here is the link if you are interested:

@Kirsten, I loved checking out your challenges too!

I've just noticed the second Dana before I went to bed last night :-)

I can believe it with the challanges since I joined about 20 yearly challenges myself, anohter five till ten seasonal and each month up to 20 monthly challenges. I tried to manage these with a similar list Malanie posted in message 14 in one of my various challenge groups but ended up with excel-sheet and plety of locations in all the groups :-)

And I'm still wondering how I managed to read more than 120 books and 23,000 pages this year only - instead of cutting down. Each time I see all these fun challenges I just jump into and only then realise actually I don't have time for it - bummer - and still I'm not really sure I'm going to change it within the next six months :-)

I can hear you. That's the downside of all the fun challenges - you need time to keep them up to date - especially if you don't read in only one genre and accordingly are active member in several groups - most likely that's why an excel sheet is working best for me plus I'm loving excel and number so much I can't express it :-)

I use the Google Documents/Drive spreadsheet feature. That's because my computer died and I had to recreate it all over. (Not fun!) I love the cloud!

message 18: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments I love challenges also! But I think I may need to try your techniques... I can't remember where I posted all mine haha oops

Weird to have 2 Danas... I can be Dana M or I'm from Canada also :)

message 19: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments I almost put the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo down too but it does pick up. I liked the second one best because it focued the most on the GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, duh! The most interesting character, I mean her name's on the cover.

I salute you challenge masters! I'm in a few, but just casually. I'll be happy, for example, to see that a book I finished can fill in a category.

message 20: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale My 10 are posted.

BTW: I love Canada :-))))))

Daisy | 313 comments @Kirsten and Melanie, I looked at your challenges and saw some I have tried to do before. The ones with a specific type of book for eac step of the challenge are really tough for me. I have a hard time finding books I will actually read to finish the challenge.

I love the A-Z challenges and spell it out challenges. I have a lot of monthly challenges that I do, also.

I'm already looking forward to read it :-)

Me too! More and more, I'm thinking of becoming a refugee and asking for mercy from our northern neighbors.

message 28: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments See what happens after the election haha... I would be willing to sponsor your refugee status!

message 29: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) It'll be funny. It'll be like when the Central American children flowed over our southern border. The Canadians will put us all in vacant prisons until we're processed...

message 30: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I have a tie. One of them is After the King: Stories in Honor of J.R.R. Tolkien. It has 3 votes already.

message 31: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 2434 comments My list and my votes are posted. So many great books you've all put up!

Kirsten and Melanie, I'll be checking out your challenges. I'm new to challenges, other than the number of books for the year. I'm doing an A-Z and the challenge that Sean posted at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

message 32: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) @Brenda - I like challenges. They help clean out my backlog and they also diversify my reading.

message 33: by Amber (last edited May 14, 2016 09:04AM) (new)

Amber Martingale 1st place: The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories by Barbara M. Walker, Garth Williams (Illustrator) with 4 votes.

2nd place: After the King: Stories in Honor of J.R.R. Tolkien with 3 votes.

message 34: by Melanie (last edited May 14, 2016 03:41PM) (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments @Kirsten....don't worry, no empty prisons for you! I'm sure Dana, Myself and other Canadians will carve out some empty bedrooms, basements and recreation centres for you.
Without getting too political I must say the election to the south has certainly gotten our attention up here. Your "election season" is incredibly long compared to ours and the events that have occurred this time have been shall we say...unique?;)

I agree that challenges keep my reading experiences more diverse. I've loved goodreads. It's wonderful to see everyone's thoughts and the late night browsing that leads to new reads is unrivalled here.

While I don't agree with the parliamentary system, I certainly do wish we had election rules like yours. We might get more work out of our Congressmen that way.

It's not just you ... it's an international embarassment for us. The Republicans make it sound that Obama has ruined our reputation across the world... however, I think they have ruined our reputation far more.

message 37: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 634 comments Well I certainly have a close voting list this month!

Shadow Prey @ 3 votes
11/22/63. @ 4 votes
The Lake House @ 4 votes

I have started The Lake house for now and am enjoying it. It will be fun to see where the final votes land.
Thanks guys.

Amber Martingale The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories
by Barbara M. Walker, Garth Williams (Illustrator) is still in first place with 6 votes and After the King: Stories in Honor of J.R.R. Tolkien still in 2nd place, still with only 3 votes.

No worries, these are some of my challenge books (from various challenges) and I keep putting some of them off (not sure if they are my cup of tea either) but I will read them all before the end of the year one way or another lol :)

My first Stephen King was The Stand and then 'Salem's Lot. I just recently finally read The Shining. Oddly enough, I didn't find it as frightening as Salem's Lot. Of course, I read that in high school, I believe.

Another good one is one of his newer ones, Revival

The Shining and really a lot of his stories are more psychological thrillers?I'm not sure that's the right description. His stories are pretty tame but today's standards. I'm partial to prison stories and I thought he did a great job with Green Mile. Interestingly I liked the movie Shankshaw Redemption much more than his story!
