Stacie (stacie16) | 11 comments Hello! I'm seeking books to read and review with my children this summer. I have a son, age 6 and a daughter, age 8. They both enjoy adventure stories, stories about fantastical creatures, bugs/animals -- above all, they like to laugh. My son is a beginning reader -- my daughter, intermediate or middle grade level, but both enjoy picture and chapter books. I always read along with them and hope to support other indie authors by adding reviews to our readings!

Tara Woods Turner Hi,

I don't have any children's books but may I recommend my book for you? It is Beyond Good manners: How to Raise a Sophisticated Child and has an excellent chapter dedicated to the arts, including how to introduce your children to great literature and the joy of reading. There are also lots of fun, enriching activities and projects in the book that you and your children can enjoy this summer. Please check out the book and if you think you would like a copy just let me know and I'll be happy to send you one.

Thanks,
Tara

I personally do not have a children's line, but a friend of mine has a book series that entertains children and adults alike.

The first book is William Bradshaw, King of the Goblins by Arthur Daigle . It might be worth checking out for your reading time with the kids.

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 145 comments They're possibly a bit young for this series then, as there's a light love story, but there's plenty of fae creatures and it's packed full of excitement...

G.R. Paskoff (grpaskoff) | 64 comments I am working on YA story, but it's not quite ready for prime time. However, a good friend of mine and GR author has a two-book series that sounds like it's exactly what you're looking for: beautiful illustrations and fantastical creatures. You can find the first book here:

K.D. McQuain (kd_mcquain) | 97 comments The Book of Three is the first in a Newbery Award winning young reader series. The whole series is fantastic, short books full of adventure and magic.

The Prince in Waiting is another great series.

These were some of the books that turned me on to reading.

D.P. Hall | 10 comments Hi Stacie,

Can I recommend my first children's novel to you for the summer, called 'JAMIE POND IN RISE OF THE HERON'

Who is Jamie Pond? You may well ask.
Well, Jamie Pond just happens to be the world's greatest amphibian super spy, and section leader of a top-secret government organisation called the CFIA (Carp & Frog Intelligence Agency).
Jamie’s incredible adventures begin deep in the heart of a top-secret research base in Salisbury.
Jamie and his trusty pals Lola, a little tree frog from the CFIA and Flapper, a Canadian goose from the CGAF (Canadian Geese Air Force) encounter for the first time the Heron a deadly adversary of the CFIA.
The Heron and his evil partner in crime Frank an American bald eagle steal secret human technology called the Ripper a time displacement weapon designed to rid the world’s rubbish by sending it to another time & dimension or uninhabited planet.
The battle for the Ripper takes Jamie and the Heron back to Tilgate in Crawley the home of the CFIA.
Will Jamie, Lola, and Flapper save the CFIA?

It's an easy read and after donating two books to my son's junior school, I've had some pretty good reports back from the kids there.
The book is currently available in paperback and Ebook on Amazon. The ebook is only 99p until further notice.

All the best

Hello Stacie! I write and illustrate children's stories. You can find them here on my website http://catblog.catblountstories.com/c.... They're unique, fun, and they all come with a thoughtful lesson. Some lessons are more evident than others.

I hope all of you enjoy them!

Best,

KayeC Jones | 8 comments Hi Stacie!

Thank you so much for supporting indie authors. Many indie authors put their heart and soul into a work and it means a lot when someone decides to read what they've shared. I'm sure you know what I mean seeing you're a poet.

I'm a new children's book author that is lucky enough to work with my wonderful husband. We would love to share our work with you and your children.

We already have five published works and they are all different, from nonsensical to empowering. You can check them out on our brand new website: Cozy Bear Studio.

In any case, thanks again for seeking out books to read with your children and I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,
KayeC

Mark Parker | 20 comments Stacie,

Ditto to KayeC's comment on indie author support. I'd gladly send you the pdf of my middle grade novel, Shaky Man Shaky Man by Mark S. Parker , if you'll give me your email address.

STAY AWAY FROM SHAKY MAN! SHAKY MAN is the story of the unlikely friendship of two boys, one white, one black, growing up in Central Texas during the 1960's. They are brought together by their common love of laughter, baseball and Star Trek. They come to deal with the racism, intolerance and turbulence of the times. There is even a murder and a trial. And, of course, there is the mysterious Shaky Man. All the kids in Tonkaway, Texas say he killed his wife and kids, eats children and abuses his dogs.

"This book is so much fun, most readers won’t realize they are being taught compassion and respect for others while turning pages to find out how the story ends." Jo Ann Holt, Dallas Focus Daily News

Please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,
Mark

Deborah Baldwin (goodreadscomdeborah_baldwin) | 25 comments Hi Stacie,
First, thank you for your interest in Indie authors. My award winning book, Bumbling Bea, is suited for kids a bit older than yours, but I'd be happy to send you a PDF copy to you anyway. Here's a short synopsis: Beatrice thinks she has no talent, but that doesn’t stop her from auditioning for the annual middle school play. Easy! Except Michiko, a new girl from Japan, shows up and ruins everything. So begins Beatrice’s humorous and diabolical plan to scare away Michiko. But Michiko has goals of her own with no plans to leave soon. Then there’s that “other” girl, Bumbling Bea, who is such a blabbermouth. What’s a girl to do? Plenty.
Thanks.

Thanks for your support

Patrice Smith (realfoodisrealgood) | 12 comments Hello Stacie,
I would love to suggest my book The Struggle: Mom and the Summertime Blues I think your children would love it.

BLURB: The story of four sisters:
Diamond
Shelia
Crystal
Felicity
who dread their summer break because of their mom. A timely and hilarious read told through the eyes and voice of adolescent authors about their perspective of Mom's summertime "fun".

Young readers will empathize with the youthful perspective of parents and "their ways".

Parents will enjoy reading about the feelings of the four girls in the story, nodding in agreement from the beginning to the end.

The entire family will enjoy this book. Instead of those great summer trips and long lazy days of summer, the four sisters complain about having to eat healthy and exercise, do homework and chores, and more. Throughout the book the girls tell of important life lessons taught by their parents. These lessons are told in a comical way.

Please let me know what format you would like if interested.

Alma J. Wilson (almajwilson) | 9 comments Hi Stacie! And thanks for offering to review. I've got 2 children's books you and the kids might like.

This one is pretty heavy. Actually, I think it's a must-read for those dealing with abusive relationships. But it does have a very happy ending.

This one is a bedtime story, offering help for those pesky monsters in the closet.

Tanya Preminger | 1 comments Hey Stacie,
My book is a great choice for beginner readers. You can hook them with the soccer/sports angle, but the book is a great tool to talk about tough emotions like shyness, fear, frustration and uplifting ones like confidence, kindness and persistence. Great for facilitating a discussion about role models too.

Stacie (stacie16) | 11 comments Hi all - We are in our 5th week of summer and reading/reviewing is coming along! The kids enjoy getting a "say" in how the book will be reviewed, and we even had fun sharing some books via video. Thanks for all the suggestions - I think we have enough to keep us busy through July! Happy Summer Reading!

Paul Charbonneau | 2 comments Hi Stacie! I recently released a children's/YA book called Scariton. Scariton by Paul Charbonneau
It is about a nine year old boy who gets transported to a strange land with fantastical creatures. I originally wrote it for my son but, after much encouragement from him, I published it for all to enjoy. Take a gander and see if it is something your kiddos would enjoy. Have a great summer!

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments Stacie,

I don't have a book of my own to hawk to you. Instead I'll suggest several by established authors:
-John Bowers' Joseph Lexxus and the Drug Runners of Altair (none of his other books, however since they're very adult oriented)
-Early books by Robert Heinlein that are aimed at kids such as:
.Red Planet
.Starman Jones
.The Rolling Stones
.The Star Beast (one of my favs when I was a kid)
Use discretion with his other books. His late works often got pretty "adult".

Your children might like my series of mystery adventure stories for children. They are available as paperbacks or on kindle at very reasonable prices. They are first chapter reads for ages 7 and over. The Summer Fete Mystery (The Jess Mystery Series, Book 4) by Nina Levison The Summer Fete Mystery This is the fourth book in the series, but they are all stand alone stories with the same characters.
