just got this book thru interlibrary loan:

Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction

This description of rain... is as close to a definition of flash fiction as I can personally offer (p.xi, Masih)

a quite poetic--perhaps, imagistic--beginning.

i'll let you all know how i like it.

(next to it in the picture is Kabuki, Vol. 1: Circle of Blood--i was standing in the lobby of the library reading it and had to force myself to stop b/c i had to go take care of other errands)

Sounds rad. Flash fictions great way to combat writer's block, too.
