Hope (eclectisismincarnate) | 49 comments Looking for suggestions, just not for books. Lol.

For those who tackle the word list challenges, what sort of system do you use? Do you only look for a few words at a time, or look for the whole list? How do you keep track of them (if you look for the whole list at once)?

Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

message 54: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 31, 2018 02:18AM) (new)

I do the whole list at once.

Usually I start my month with an e-book, with that I can search the book with the list and don't have to remember all of them first.

After one or two e-books usually the list is down for me to a managable level to remember, and for the first times, I re-read my list every time before I open my book.

But I do concentrate on words (or dismiss some of them) if I read a book where some of them are most likely (not) to be found... like, in a historical book the chances of finding "lord" is more likley than finding "spacecraft" or something like that :)

(and with the really hard words to find, they get stuck in my head so bad that I once got really excited when I saw wheelbarrow. standing next to my parent's garden shed, lol)

edit: and for keeping track - with an e-book, I sit down at the computer and search and add all the words at once. with a physical book I make a note (on my phone) with the word an page and when I've finished my book I update my challenge.

I used to use a piece of paper with my missing words as bookmark where I've added the page number when I found a word, but I kept loosing it so I dismissed that.

Do you think the search option makes that much of a difference? I really only read paper books, so am wondering if it's still worth trying.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Are you from the US? I think on amazon there's an option to search the books for words, but I don't know because we don't have it. I think it's easier, because I don't have to think about the words while reading, I just let the device search for me.

But I know some people think of it as cheating because it's easy. I don't know *shrug* I've still read the book and the words, so for me it's just a simplification

Yes on amazon and sometimes in google books, you can search for the words. In amazon you have to use a paper book edition to search.

They do count in this group. Many groups do not allow them.

Just to let y'all know:
If you are close to finishing a challenge and time has run out, I will not make you to abandon the challenge. Go ahead and finish it!

With the exception of the monthly challenges, the duration is "suggested".

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

JoAnne, sorry for laughing, but for a moment I had a vision of you, coming in our houses and confiscate the books that would fit not-finished tasks of challenges that had ended :D

I feel bad when some people get to the end of 3 months and they need just 1 book... read the book and finish - this is not real life, it's just a game!

Young At Heart Reader | 100 comments Quick Question, it is possible to use one book for two scavenger hunt challenges and one monthly challenge

Yes, you may use books for more than one challenge.

Young At Heart Reader | 100 comments I'm trying to see if these two books look alike enough for the Beatles challenge

Between the Blade and the Heart (Valkyrie, #1) by Amanda Hocking Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore

I'll accept it.

Tanya | 38 comments For the May Clean It Out challenge, the "a book you bought but haven't read" option. Does it need to be a book you bought new (full price) for or are used books and/or ebooks you paid for also okay? Thanks!

Daniel Hanson-Brown (dozerpup711) | 2717 comments So, I have a few books in my TBR pile that start with numbers and just wanted clarification that of how they are handled in A-Z and Spell Out challenges. I assume that they would count for the letter with which the spelled out number starts (1Q84 = O, 52 Sleepless Nights = F) Is that correct thinking?

Jodi (jari-chan) Hello :)
I just wanted to ask, since I read most of my books in German (goes faster) - do I use the German title or the English one? What if there's no English translation (yet)? Same goes for the few book in Danish I've got on my TBR.

Use the edition that you have read or one that's close.

Angie (angiemarie78) I’m seeing a number after given the option to read a series. For example: read a series #4....what does the number signify?

Angie wrote: "I’m seeing a number after given the option to read a series. For example: read a series #4....what does the number signify?"

It means the place (installment) of the book in a special series, like, in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, the #4 in this series would be Four to Score. Usually you can see a book's place in a series on goodreads between this brackets*( ) next to the book's name and/or written in grey below the name of the book

* I don't know how this ( ) symbols are called in English, and I'm not sure if I picked the right word from the dictionary, sorry XD

Thanks Rosa!! :)

They are parentheses. (9)

(parentheses)
a pair of round brackets ( ) used to mark off a parenthetical word or phrase.

Thank you!

I'm not sure if I will remember this word, though. Maybe if I think of the ( ) as the parents, at least that will bring me to "this parent-thingies above the 8 and the 9" :D

message 91: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 24, 2019 07:36AM) (new)

Can somebody help me with this task:

2. Read a book where the first letter of every word of the title (3 word minimum, include A, An and The) AND the author's initials (first and last name only) can be found in Everett AquaSox

(every letter can just be used once, page minimum 150)

I wont read historical fiction, christian fiction or things that are sad or very gory (and nothing from Victor Hugo) but besides that... I'm desperate, lol

(edit, books from Victor Hugo wouldn't work of course, but nevertheless)

thought it would be easier to ask here then in all the a-z challenges separately

In the a-z character challenges can you use part names or does it have to be full.
for example Newt in the maze runner series has no surname. would just using newt be ok

I read a lot of books where they only go by first name or they lie about surname.

Helen | 1255 comments Hi,

I noticed that the Notre Dame Tribute challenge disappeared overnight.

Do some have time limits, but you just don't list them?
