Welcome to IRCB Peter! What's your favorite manga series? I don't read a lot of it, but ワンパンマン 1 Wanpanman 1 is great.

Meera | 6 comments Hello, I'm Meera from Massachusetts, US. I am an avid reader but haven't read too many graphic novels. Kate invited me a while back (thank you Kate!) but I didn't join because I didn't think I read enough graphic novels to join. Well, yesterday I picked up Saga, Vol. 1 and I was hooked! So here I am and will try some of the other novels you've already read.

So glad you joined Meera! Saga, Vol. 1 is the ultimate gateway comic. I know so many people who became comic readers because of it! I definitely think you'll enjoy this month's BotM The Spire if you enjoy Saga.

Welcome to the IRCB group and thank you for listening! It sounds like we have a lot of the same favorite writers and artists.

How is God Country? I read the first issue but haven't kept up with it. Is it worth looking for when it comes out in trade?

Nick | 39 comments Hey all,

I'm Nick, and I'm on the IRCB podcast semi-regularly. If you listen, chances are you've heard me in my de facto role as "Resident Valiant mouthpiece," or as a substitute host to Mike Rapin (with varying results). I'm from Michigan, which is apparently resplendent with natural beauty, but I wouldn't know.

What do I read:
DC (Blend of a few Batbooks like All-Star Batman and Supersons, alongside "weird stuff" like The Hellblazer and Future Quest),

Dark Horse (original titles like Matt Kindt's Dept. H and Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer, as well as franchise properties like Aliens: Defiance)

Image (Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's Descender, Greg Rucka's Lazarus, John Layman's Chew)

and of course, Valiant (there's just too many to name here, but The Valiant by Lemire/Kindt with Paolo Rivera on art, and Ninjak and Bloodshot Reborn are favs).

James Hahn | 38 comments Hi I'm James. I'm from Michigan, and I read mostly Image and Dark Horse, along with a ton of manga. Horror is my bread and butter, along with crazy indie stuff. I think I was even on the show once?

I met Mike in college; he gave me a few recommendations, and my obsessive collecting tendencies took it from there. I was a huge book reader so it didn't take much.

Been a huge fan of the show from the beginning, look forward to it every week. You guys give me great recommendations, I read almost all of them. Shoutout to Tia and Kate specifically for some sick picks that I wouldn't normally read, you guys rock! I also love listening to Mike's x-trash problems, sorry not sorry.

Keep up the good work!!!

What's your favorite horror comic?

message 121: by James (new)

James Hahn | 38 comments Kate wrote: "What's your favorite horror comic?"

Hmm well Junji Ito is my favorite manga creator, and his book Uzumaki is some truly disturbing stuff. But if we are staying in the realm of "true comics" I'd probably say Harrow County, even though its not exactly "scary" per se.

Joe Wilson (joewilson82) Hi I'm Joe. I'm from the Chicago suburbs. I collected comics as a child, and in the past few years I've regained my love for them as an adult. I read mostly Image & Marvel, but I'm willingly to give anything a go regardless of publisher.

Currently I'm enjoying- Saga, Descender, Kill or Be Killed, Deadly Class, Black Bolt, Iron Fist. I could name a bunch more, but felt I should keep this brief.

Recent books that ended that I liked- Moon Knight, Reborn, Nailbiter, God Country.

I really enjoy the podcast!

Chad | 3 comments Hello everyone, my name is Chad and I live in Virginia. When I was younger I spent a lot of time watchingX-men, DBZ, batman, Gundam, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, sooooo much more. But being so young I never really thought about reading comics, just wanted to watch the cartoons and expand my imagination.

I really didn't start to play close attention to comics/graphic novels until 2015, a year which I attended my first Comic Con. At this Comic Con I was introduced to Southern Bastards #1 and Saga, Vol. 1 and two years later my mind is still blown! I really am looking forward to being apart of this group and learning a lot more about the comic book world!

Hey Philip! Right now my favorite comic by far is Brian K. Vaughan's Saga, Vol. 1. This comic is so leftfield yet so relatable at times, I just love it! I also love Southern Bastards #1. As far as publishers go I really do like Marvel and what they've done with the "rebooting" of the Star Wars comics. If you have any suggestions please pass them along.

Definitely read more of Saga and Southern Bastards. Both are very good series. I also like The Private Eye and Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan. The new Star Wars comics have been fun to read, but I've only read a few of them so far.

Ed Maclaren (edmaclaren) | 14 comments Hi all! I'm Ed from Toronto and I was a big comic reader and collector back in the 80s - Marvel, DC and a lot of indie comics. Left it all behind in the early 90s after buying the multiple Todd McFarlane covers on his Spider-Man #1. Realized immediately that it was either have a life or have it consumed buying every variant of every comic known to man!

Strapped on my web shooters again a couple of years ago and started catching up on everything I've missed over the last 20 years. I mainly focus on digital trades now while buying old silver age floppies to fill in gaps in my collection.

Having a great time listening to the I Read Comic Books podcast especially the discussion portion of the show - interesting topics discussed by knowledgeable people.

Hoping to further expand my reading palette and further immerse myself in comic culture!

Ed Maclaren (edmaclaren) | 14 comments So much to choose from but the ones that immediately come to mind are Joss Whedon's time on Astonishing X-Men and Ed Brubaker's amazing Captain America run. Walking Dead has been a gateway into a bunch of other Image titles.

I share your ongoing "commitment" to all things X-Men and I'm up-to-date with most of the titles up to Marvel Now. Taking a break before I dig in to the next few years. Any tips on navigating are appreciated!

I actually found out about the show on Google Play. Was looking for a good comic book podcast, did a search, subscribed to a ton of them and unsubscribed just as fast until I got to your show. I enjoy the knowledge level you guys have and your in-depth focus on interesting aspects of comic culture. I'm already digging through your back catalog - loads of great material! Thanks!

Welcome to IRCB Bruce! I really like Saga too.

If you like standalone Image series, I'd recommend Lazarus, Vol. 1: Family and Revival, Vol. 1: You're Among Friends. Both are great sci-fi series, though they take place on earth instead of space.

If you'd rather stick to other planets, Bendis's Guardians of the Galaxy run (starting with Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 1: Cosmic Avengers) is a great read.

IRCB's 2017 Recommended Reading Challenge is another place to find lots of great comics. Whatever you read, be sure to let us know what you think of it over on our monthly "What are you reading this month?" threads!

Kadia Scott Hey Everyone!
I'm Kadia! I live in North Carolina. I've been reading comics since I was old enough to read and I have been enjoying all the sweet comic book merch in women's sizes that now exists because being a nerd is cool now. Lol!

My favorite writers right now are Brian K Vaughn, Kieron Gillen, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Chip Zdarsky... Basically if any of those people are writing it, I'm reading it.

I just finished Locke and Key which was really spooky, super depressing and really well written.

I'm a Marvel girl. Kind of... I still read Marvel occasionally but they are canceling my favorite books left and right so we'll see how long that last. I started my love of comics on X-men and Batman and I am loyal so they are my favs til I die.

I'm excited to talk comics with you all!
