I Read Comic Books discussion
Introduce Yourself

Hi Katie, welcome to the group! What kind of stories do you like to read in general?
A couple books that I would recommend regardless are I Kill Giants and Preludes & Nocturnes.

I'm Kadia! I live in North Carolina. I've been reading comics since I was old enough to read and I have been enjoying all the sweet comic book merch in women's sizes tha..."
I want to say "Bitch Planet" but they come out so infrequently that I'm going to have to go with "Descender" . My heart is literally in my throat every time I read a new issue. Lol!

I currently live in Denver, CO and I have been reading comics since I was 10! I started collecting when I was 13 and had the chance to meet Darwyn Cooke- a real game changer for younger me!
I have so many favorites so I guess I'll make two lists... My favorite current/recently ended titles would have to be Mister Miracle, Batman, Transformers: Lost Light, Motor Crush, Deathstroke, Green Arrow, Lemire's Moon Knight run, and Transformers: Till All Are One.
A few of my favorite comics that have really made me passionate for the medium include: The Vision, Batman: Year One, The New Frontier, Sheriff of Babylon, Batman: Hush, Red Hood: Lost Days, Transformers: More That Meets the Eye, Batman: Ego, Kirby's first Mister Miracle run, Green Arrow: Long Bow Hunters, and Batman: Long Halloween.
I look forward to being able to have some discussion and some recommendations on things that I wouldn't typically go for!
Welcome to IRCB Finny! Man, you named a lot of great stuff. The Vision and Sheriff of Babylon are two of my favorites as well. Have you tried King's Batman run?

Hi Kate! I have it's one of my favorite current titles! He is killing it with the bat/cat proposal!

Awesome! SOO glad this series has become so popular, I have always loved Transformers but the IDW comics have been such a game changer and MTMTE/ Lost Light has been my favorite by far!
Have you read the Wreckers series yet? If not I highly suggest those :) If you ever want to chat TF drop me a message!

I live in Chicago, I read a ton of Valiant, Image and Dark Horse. I'm the hugest fan of anything Mignolaverse. Of late I've also been trying to go back and read older stuff as they make omnibus editions. I've just recently got the Fourth World books and I love them.
Hi Ryan, welcome to IRCB! I am forever intending to check out more Valiant. What is your favorite series from them?

Oh boy, the only Transformers comics I've read are MTMTE. Totally changed the way I looked at those comics. I love the intrigue that book offers.
Got a link to the Wreckers? I'd be willing to check it out...

Hey! I will send you a message :)

I’m pretty mainstream with my comic reading with lots of the big two and indie (image/darkhorse).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Live in Silicon Valley, California. Started reading and collecting comics as a kid in Cambridge, MA, circa 1978 (Million Year Picnic, anyone?). Stopped buying/reading comics in college (no money) and didn't pick it up again until 2015. Variant covers? Events? Popular indy books? Two Spidermans? $4.99 per issue!!? I'm totally sucked back in.
Loving the podcast, and now, the Goodreads group.
Thanks for listening and welcome to the group Robert! What was your favorite comic as a kid, and what is the best comic you've read since getting back into them?

Started out as a big DC fan, loving silver age Legion of Superheroes. Then, in jr. high became a big X-Men fan during Claremont/Byrne run.
Since then, I considered myself a Marvel fanboy. I even loved the 2015 Secret Wars event. But have been disappointed with most of Marvel's events, gimmicks, and stories since then.
As for the best comic I've read since rediscovering comics, I'd say Tom King.
Hey everyone! My name is Adam and I live in southeast Minnesota. I've always been a fan of comics, but I've only really been able to get into them about a year and a half ago (when I first got a full time job). I started out as a big Marvel fan when I was a kid, but started drifting more towards DC when I started collecting (especially the less popular characters - The Question, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, etc). Now I've been shifting away from big 2 super hero stuff and more towards classic Vertigo and indie stuff.
I pretty much just read DC and Image at the moment. I'd be reading stuff from smaller publishers as well, but my LCS unfortunately only carries the big 2 and Image. It might be both a blessing and a curse, as my pull list would probably be twice as big as it is now. I did, however, pre-order a couple of Dark Horse books through them (The Seeds and Black Hammer: Age of Doom).

I was a big fan of Claremont/Byrne X-Men... (not so happy with Claremont sans Byrne), and Frank Miller's Daredevil.
I was pretty much out of comics after Watchmen- missed the 90s.
Recently I have been reading comics on my Kindle Fire, and my library also has a big graphic novels collection (including superheros).
Happy to discuss golden age, silver age, bronze age and get some tips on whose works to look out for now.

I'm in Dallas, Texas. The first comic book I ever read was a Calvin & Hobbs anthology my big brother had when we were kids. Now I read more comics published by Image than anything else. I also really like Gaurdians of the Galaxy and Hawkeye (especially Kate Bishop, which is about to end : (
And I work at a comic book shop part-time.

Yessssss! Kelly Sue Deconnick <3 Bitch Planet is one of my favorites. I'm going crazy waiting for them to continue the main story line.

Hi Adam! Welcome to the group! I am looking forward to The Seeds as well! Have you tried out Comixology.com for access to more digital books? I also read a lot of graphic novels from my local library. Hoopla is a great electronic resource for comics that a lot of library use.
What's your favorite Image comic? I don't read much DC myself, but my comics shelf is full of Image!

Hi Christopher! I am glad you decided to join the group! Amazon definitely carries a lot of digital comics, and I'm glad you've also discovered your library's collection! I have about 8 graphic novels out of the library right now myself.
Are you reading any ongoing series right now? I know X-Men put out a lot of new titles recently.

Hi Kelly! Welcome to the group! I also loved Cavin and Hobbes as a kid, and I think I may still have those books floating around somewhere.
I read a lot of Image as well! Reading the types of books Image puts out organically led me to reading a lot from Boom! Box as well. They have similarly diverse titles with an indy feel. Do you have a favorite ongoing series (besides Guardians and Hawkeye)?

I am catching up on a lot. I recently finished New X-Men, Volume 6: Planet X and thought it was great.

I really love Outcast. Saga finally came back yesterday! I've also been reading Monstress, and Kill or Be Killed. I just started The Family Trade and X-Men Red.
What boom! box titles do you recommend? They publish Lumberjanes, right?

Kill or Be Killed is so good. I honestly think it might be Brubaker/Phillips best work...though I'd wager there's a few Criminal fans that would disagree.
Have you read any of Lazarus or Roche Limit? Those have got to be two of my favorite series from Image Comics.

I am so very behind on Saga! I need to catch up. I also read the first arc of Monstress in single issues, and need to get ahold of the second arc in trade now.
Boom! Box publishes Lumberjanes, Giant Days, Backstagers, Tyson Hesse's Diesel, Heavy Vinyl, and Misfit City, and those are just the ones I've read! Boom! Studios also published Abbott, which I am collecting, but I'm not sure which imprint it's being printed under.
Lumberjanes is ongoing, but has a number of trades out that should be easy to find. Giant Days is also ongoing and has a few trades out. That one is about a trio of girls going through college and getting into shenanigans -- I highly recommend it. If you like those two series, then I would look into the others, which are all completed one-arc books (so far). Backstagers is a little niche -- it's about a high school tech crew with a supernatural tech room.

I really liked the first volume of Joyride, Volume 1, which is published by one of the Boom imprints. The story is fun. I loved how the book was presented visually though. It made use of the medium wonderfully.

I also like Calvin and Hobbs. My all time Favorites are Peanuts. Charlie Brown and Snoopy are timeless.

Love Peanuts. Used to have several of those old, paperback size collections when I was a kid, read 'em I don' t know how many times. Wonder what ever happened to those...
Gregory wrote: "I have a place in my heart for Peanuts. Even as an adult, they put a smile on my face."
Me too. It was the first comic I read as a kid (I read it in the newspaper) and my first collection.

I've been a fan of all things Superhero since I was a kid, and read my first X-Men comic in the 90s, no idea what the story was but always remember being captivated by Wolverine in it, and have been a Wolverine fan since then.
Reading and collecting comic books has only really become a hobby for me in the last few years.
I'm a big fan of all things Batman and started off mostly reading Batman stories, but over time I branched out and started picking random characters and stories.
Some of my favourites include Winick's Green Arrow, Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run, Marvel's cosmic stuff, Brubaker's Captain America and Daredevil and Transformers.
Looking forward to discussing comics with you guys and getting some recommendations.

Welcome to the group, Trevor! How do you get your comics in a small Irish town? Do you have a local comic shop, or visit a larger city, or read everything digitally?
I'm not big into cape stories myself, but Runaways Deluxe, Vol. 1 wraps into the Marvel universe a bit. It's about a group of kids who find out (spoilers) their parents are bad guys. They all have to figure out their abilities while also handling all the complications that come from just being teenagers. Their story involves a relative of The Vision, which also comes into play in the new arc by Rainbow Rowell. Check out The Vision, Volume 1: Little Worse Than A Man if you're interested in reading about The Vision trying to being a normal guy and have a family. I'm not hyping it well, but it's a really great book.

I have only read Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery and loved the D&D vibe. I have heard mixed reviews on the re-launch, but I'd like to read the rest of the trades.

Thanks Kait. I don't have a local comic shop unfortunately, wish I did. I usually order a couple of trade paperbacks online once a month, but I'm always on the lookout for a comic shop if I happen to be in a bigger city.
Cool, I'll check those out. I've heard good things about The Vision, and really liked King's Omega Men. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks Kate. I'll add that to the list, thanks.
My favourite is probably The Thanos Imperative.
Mostly because it was the first cosmic story I'd read and even though I really hadn't a clue what was going on, I just loved the art, the action and being introduced to some really cool characters I'd never even heard of before.
I've since been eager to read the Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest stories. Have you read them?
