message 1: by Elodie (new)

Elodie | 32 comments Hi,
I'm working on my first novel and I'm not an English native so I have a little issue with a specific word. My book (scifi romance) is about people who are provided a cure for their illnesses from an institution and I need an "umbrella term" for them. I can't call them "patients" in my case because I need something more fictional that makes them different from the rest of the "normal population". I've already considered "patients" but it seems not specific enough.
For now, I called them simply "Receivers" in lack of a better term but if you have suggestions I'd be glad to hear them!

Are they marked in anyway or have anything that makes them stand out to other people? Or do they just look like people?
Does the vaccination/treatment do anything to control them or anything different like that?
Is there a name for your treatment?
Otherwise, P.D. has some pretty good ones, in my opinion. Simple and to the point.

Elodie | 32 comments @ P.D.: have to agree with Riley, simple and to the point, I will definitely choose one of them
@ Riley: would answer your questions but as you said, P.D. already did the job for me :D
thank you guys so much!!!

Jane Jago | 888 comments I like PDs suggestions.

Here are a couple more.

Possibly Guinea Pigs - although that would imply that they are being experimented on.

The Recovered maybe.

message 6: by Elodie (new)

Elodie | 32 comments that's also a very good one - oh no, now I need to choose ^^

John Hooker | 90 comments "recipients" might be what you were going after with "receivers"

Elodie | 32 comments but just to take in every kind of option, here some further info: they receive the cure on a regular basis. as soon as they stop taking it, they die. so if I think about it, "the Cured" or something like that isn't quite right because they depend on it.
@ Riley. They look like the rest of the population and the vaccine doesn't control them. I simply call it "the Cure"

Elodie | 32 comments @John: I already considered "the Recipients" but I wasn't sure if it that was a term only use in the communicative sense, you know if someone sits in front of the TV he's a recipient or something like that...

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) | 629 comments The Dependents? No, this sounds awful!! Hahaha!!

Personally, I dig "The Recipients". Sounds sci-fi-ey to me. Of course, it's totally outta my realm so I have no idea LOL

No, a recipient is just a person who receives something:

"the recipients of the form letter"; "the recipient of the organ transplant"; "the recipient of the prize" and so on.

Elodie | 32 comments @ Annie: I totally agree, the Recipients is perfect I think.
Thank you all!!!

W. Boutwell | 157 comments The current enthusiasm is to call everyone "Clients" as in "The Client was found guilty by a jury of his peers and sentenced to 2 to 5."

I was going to suggest Clients as well. Even in nursing school we more often call people "clients" than "patients" because we don't always treat sick people, or only in a clinical setting.... :-k

I am suggesting

The treated.

message 17: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Callens | 193 comments For stuff like that, I like to look back at latin and greek roots. For Recipient, the greek equivelent is "paralíptis". I think that something like The Paraliptis sounds futuristic and pretty cool.
