How are the Quint Chronicles connected?

Many readers have written to ask me about the connection between the various "Quint Chronicles"-- what, they want to know, does The Small Fortune of Dorothea Q (SMFODQ) has to do with the other two? I'll try to answer here.
"Dorothea Quint" was published before the other two. Winnie Quint appears in it, but much later on her life -- when she is a grandmother. Two of the sons from The Sugar Planter's Daughter are prominent (but not main) characters. The Dorothea Quint of the title is Winnie's daughter-in-law. So the book is set much later in life; part of it is actually in our own time. But even though you will find out about two of Winnie's sons, it's a completely different story, so you can read it without fear of spoilers.
