I know most of us have been in this group a long time, but we have some new members.

Let's take a minute to say hello and tell a few fun facts about yourself!

So I am, Lady Belleza (your fearless leader), also know as Bel, or Bella. I am single, live in NYC, no SO, children or pets, just an iPhone and a scary brain. I have a very warped sense of humor (some say, some say it's perfect).

message 3: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments I'm Eileen the True Crime Queen. If I had to choose between reading and breathing, I'd have to sit down and think it over. (And then I'd choose reading.) I, like Bel, am between SOs, but I have 3 cats and 3 hermit crabs. And many, many books and movies. My favorite movies are the kind with stupid-looking rubber monsters in them. But I am starting to collect true-crime movies as well.

Shelley | 1225 comments I live on the east coast of Canada on a lake with loons (I feel right at home) and joined this forum relatively recently. I have been married for a long time ... to the same guy. We have two daughters and two grandsons; fraternal twins now 3.5 years old

My interest in true crime came out of an interest in psychopathy and the psychology of "evil". I am fairly new to a lot of the villains and cases but I have been reading a lot of true crime recently. I have learned a lot on this forum and I have fun! My sense of humor can be a bit off beat at times too. :)

message 5: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments I'm Kathy - I go by K.A. on Goodreads because it's my author name. I DON'T write true crime.

I was a law enforcement officer and emergency medical technician for more than 20 years and retired nearly two years ago. I live in northern Colorado with now just one dog, a blue heeler named Carter who is one odd puppy. No SO, no kids. I like outdoor activities and travel, though the last time I combined the two I fell down a hill in Italy and broke my leg.

I first joined this particular group when it was a Shelfari group, then followed it here. I started reading true crime as a teen and then continued during my LEO years. I still prefer to read non-fiction of various types.

Hari Brandl (crochetbuddies) | 649 comments Hello,
My name is Hari (pronounced Ha-Re) and have been oddly interested in True Crime since my tweens. I am retired from emergency nursing (level 1 trauma center-type) and now have to divide my time between watching "Investigation Discovery"-type videos and knitting (which I can do at the same time), and reading, (to which I must devote full attention). A recent member, not as interested in interaction on social media as in finding out what is new and captivating in the genre.
I live with two cats, and close to my daughter and son-in-law but no longer have an SO. Life is good.

message 7: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments And what are you reading lately, Hari?

Hari Brandl (crochetbuddies) | 649 comments Hi, Fishface,
Just now I opened my Sunday edition of the Boston Globe and found the "Ideas" section is titled "The Issue of Crime" Ten short articles on interesting crimes committed in the greater Boston area. Serendipity...
Other than that, I am in the middle of "The Mad Sculptor: the maniac, the model, and the murder that shook the nation" by Harold Schechter. Next read will be "Son" by Jack Olsen.
Thanks for asking.

message 9: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments I LOVED Son. Not the guy -- the book about him.

Hi all; I didn't see an introductions thread....so thought I'd comment in here; hope that is okay. I'm new to the group...been on Goodreads for about 2 years but not very active and trying to change that this year. I read a lot of different genres, including true crime (mostly about serial killers). I'm currently making my way, slowly, through the book "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and his People" by Tim Reiterman. "

Erin | 376 comments Hi everyone! I'm Erin I'm from Northern Kentucky. Single with no kids. I work at my local library. I fell in love with TC when I was in middle school and had to miss a lot of school due to migraines. I spent a lot of time watching Court tv.

message 12: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments Aha, a librarian! No wonder you have over 11,000 books on your shelves...

message 13: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh Brooks | 104 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Ashleigh! I live in Alabama with my husband of 4 years, our two year old daughter, and our 3 year old Doberman. I'm studying to become a registered nurse and I'm a huge fan of horror movies/books and true crime (obviously). When I'm not reading or watching Investigation Discovery, I like to go on walks with my daughter or practice yoga. I joined this group because I'd like to interact and have discussions with people who also have an interest in true crime. (Because everyone else thinks my interest is "creepy")

Hi Ashleigh! We are all 'creepy' here. :-)

message 16: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments Hey Ashleigh! What TC are you reading at the moment, if any?

message 17: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh Brooks | 104 comments Thanks everyone!

I just recently finished Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters by Peter Vronsky. It was very insightful and contained numerous case studies of killers I had never even heard of. At the moment, I have several unread books ( not TC) that I'm trying to finish so I can donate them. However, I found a book on torture killers at a thrift store that I'm hoping to start soon!

By any chance would that be Torture Killers edited by Rose Mandelsberg?

Kristin (savannahjan) | 62 comments I’m Kristin. I’m 36 years old, married for four years, no kids I’ve always been interested in True Crime. I watched Unsolved Mysteries religiously when I was 9. *laugh* my True Crime interest was rekindled a little over a year ago when I discovered podcasts. Though when ID first became a channel, I lost many, many hours of my life sucked in to those shows. I’ve been in the group about a year, I think?

message 22: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments Well, thanks for introducing yourself! What are you reading lately Kristin?

message 23: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (savannahjan) | 62 comments I’ve majorly stalled out. :( I started Harry Potter at the beginning of the year, book 1, and I still haven’t finished it. Because I’m also ready S. By J. J. Abrams. Except that book is so intimidating, I avoid reading it. But I need to read it because my best friend gave it to me and is awaiting my review. So.....that’s my sad little tale. *laugh*

I read The Girl in the Leaves recently, and it was so meh, I’m gunshy about picking my next TC. I’m sure this funk will end soon. At least I hope it does.

message 24: by Caitlin (last edited Jan 28, 2018 09:59AM) (new)

Caitlin (cmmcgee_writer92) | 210 comments I'm Caitlin, 25 years old and desperately trying to find my way and place in the world. No SO at the moment, actually just ended a friendship with my ex... things were going pretty great but for a number of reasons things just weren't going to work, but things got pretty nasty trying to stay friends and she turned out to be a narcissist with some lovely sociopathic tendencies and I let her emotionally abuse me and control me and gaslight me for several months before we had a huge blow out that ended with me finally blocking her so that I can finally work toward recovering. Soooo, taking a break from relationships while I sort out that mess in my head.

I've been interested in true crime for a while, especially when it comes to serial killers (much to the dismay of my dad he thinks my fascination with the psychology of serial killers and learning why they do what they do is some sort of sign that he should be worried about lol). I'm not really sure what really kicked off my interest in the genre.... I suppose maybe it started years ago with a long forgotten series that wasn't around for very long called "Close to Home." That kicked off my interest in criminal prosecution and I suppose it just sort of evolved from there until I watched From Hell which got me really into studying Jack the Ripper, and the horror flick Stay Alive which got me studying Bathory and others from there. I'm also a psych buff, I'm all for getting into people's heads and finding out what makes them tick, what's different about the anatomy of their brains and their psychology that drives to deviate from what's considered the "norm" or "accepted" behavior or to do incredibly sick and terrible things. I'm also a sucker for a good mystery and love sitting and trying to solve things. So, needless to say, unsolved serial killings are at the top of my true crime obsession list. I actually recently signed up for The Hunter a Killer subscription box, and while I took a break from True Crime for a while, my anticipation over jumping into this game (even though it's fiction based) sort of kicked me back into it again, and so here I am. :)

Fishface | 18881 comments And are you reading any TC at the moment? Your story reminds me of an old issue I have with the TC genre: there's not enough about the effects of mental battering and especially gaslighting. Those can be some pretty deep woods to find your way out of...having been gaslighted myself I know exactly what that's like.

Nothing at the moment, but I was at the library yesterday and found a bunch of stuff there that I'll have to check out once I return the ones I checked out for the magazine I do some work for (up and coming online mag for readers and writers called Books and Quills Magazine). And I picked up Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit while I was at target a couple days ago that I plan to start soon.

And yeah, I wish there were more books on that too. It's a tough thing to work through especially when it feels like there are so few resources out there. Might just have to see about contributing toward fixing that and writing something up myself lol.

message 27: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18881 comments I have never read Surviving Intimate Terrorism, but I believe that is a big part of the author's story. She didn't call the police on her partner when he was killing their daughter because he had her believing that if she did die, he would just bring her back from the dead.

message 28: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (cmmcgee_writer92) | 210 comments Will definitely have to add that to my to read list and check it out. That's intense and messed up on so many levels.
