Firstly, thank you to Net Galley, The publishers and the author for a ARC copy for review.
Let me start by saying, halfway through this book, I would have given this book a three star, then reading the second half and the book becomes a four star, pace, suspense and gripping action and shocks, and a clear four star.
To escape the gut-churning violence of LAPD, Garrett Evans moves home to sleepy Artemis, West Virginia to take over his deceased father's position as Chief of Police. The peaceful environment helps him hide his struggle with PTSD-- Until Garrett kills a man and loses his job when his mental condition is questioned.
Things only get worse from there.
New York P.I. Chester LaSalle is searching for a missing girl last seen in Artemis. Working together, Garret and LaSalle dig up small town secrets best left buried behind the barn. It appears a serial killer has murdered transient prostitutes around Artemis for decades.
Telltale signs point to a suspect Garrett doesn't want to consider. No way Smiley Carmichael, the most respected man in Artemis, is a serial killer.
As if Garrett didn't have enough problems, LaSalle is hiding his own secret. He's not just seeking a missing girl. He's been hired to murder the person who made her disappear.
You cannot help but like the two main characters, Garrett and La Salle.
This book had a great second half, what was going to happen next, who would survive to the end...
A great surprise from an author I have not read before.

Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and of course Robert Bryndza for a copy of number 5th in the Erika Foster series..
One series of books I am up to date on, and read all of them !
A good start !
The suitcase was badly rusted, and took Erika several attempts, but it yielded and sagged open as she unzipped it. Nothing could prepare her for what she would find inside…
When a battered suitcase containing the dismembered body of a young man washes up on the shore of the river Thames, Detective Erika Foster is shocked. She’s worked on some terrifying cases but never seen anything like this before.
As Erika and her team set to work, she makes the link with another victim – the body of a young woman dumped in an identical suitcase two weeks ago.
Erika quickly realises she’s on the trail of a serial killer who’s already made their next move. Yet just as Erika starts to make headway with the investigation, she is the victim of a brutal attack.
But nothing will stop Erika. As the body count rises, the twin daughters of her colleague Commander Marsh are abducted, and the stakes are higher than ever before. Can Erika save the lives of two innocent children before it’s too late? She’s running out of time and about to make a disturbing discovery…there’s more than one killer.
She fell in love with a killer, now she’s one too.
Brilliantly gripping, Cold Blood will have you hooked from the first page and holding your breath to the heart-stopping and shocking ending.
Erika is a character, if you have read the series, you get to know her so well. A loner with few friends outside of work and a dedicated, stubborn, strong minded, powerful woman, who just does not know when to stop.
With memories that will always be in her head, some tough cases in the past...
Here she comes across one of the nastiest serial killers, with some gory and violent parts of the book. Erika has a tough case.
A great paced, as always, gritty, gory story, with shocks, violence, and as usual Erika with great support from Moss, Peterson, Marsh.
A great detective series. A clear four stars
