Aislinn So just in case anyone is interested, last night I uploaded my final copy of my preorder. Amazon sent me an email saying 'Thanks for uploading your final copy'. So, despite not differentiating between a draft and a final copy, they can still tell the difference. Presumably because I have a Table of Contents and copyright page, etc.

India Adams (indiaradams) | 66 comments How far in advance of your release date can you start the preorder now? Has that changed also? I know the big dogs got many more months than us but maybe it's changed? For the good?

I think it's still 90 days?

What I figured. Thank you!

Valia Lind (valialind) I tried pre-order for my latest book (it's a third in a trilogy so I thought this would be a good time) and now I'm all nervous about everything. Haha. I guess that's normal with books coming out, but still. I hope nothing messes up for me before it goes live Dec. 7th!

C.L. Lynch (cllynchauthor) | 316 comments So, when I originally uploaded I had the "draft" option and I got the 10 day warning. But that has since updated. When I went to upload my final version the draft part had disappeared and their confirmation email reminded me to be sure I had my final version uploaded by the publication date.

Marie Silk | 611 comments Oh geez, this is literally the fourth time that KDP pre-order has changed for me since I began setting up this book lol. Now it does not say anything about a draft or final version, nothing about 3 days or 10 days, just to upload a manuscript containing interior content.

Does this mean I can upload a "draft" and not be too worried about it? Or should I be extra worried about it? *rubs chin thoughtfully*

Erica Stinson (goodreadscomerica_r_stinson) | 139 comments This pre-order thing kicked my tail with my last book. I was sweating bullets trying to get it in TEN days before it was due lol. Never again.....or maybe...I dunno. I am still working on my current novel and hope to have a pre-order copy ready at least by the end of December...but I will not announce that pre-order until I have a novel fully ready to go. The other thing that drove me nuts was that they wouldn't let you change anything even though there was plenty of time....I might have to watch for a while and see if I will do this or not.....(standing by......)

Erica;-)

C.L. Lynch (cllynchauthor) | 316 comments Another update - it shut down my ability to upload new files or make changes 3 days before the publication date. It's okay, I was just looking to fix a comma splice that I noted at the last minute, but FYI!

message 60: by Annie (new)

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) | 629 comments Head's up, everyone.

Just to 2nd Miss C.L.'s warning, take the 3-day warning very seriously!! I had uploaded a dummy file to check what formatting looked like and that sucker got "locked in" AND released to everyone who preordered. Even the KDP support team couldn't change it for it. The system just freezes all changes from being made. So yeah...

Don't do what I did LOL

Hugs,
Ann

Oh no! That's like my worst nightmare. I hope it turned out OK.

message 62: by Annie (new)

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) | 629 comments Haha nope. A whackload of people have no idea there's an update and have read/are reading the dummy file. Lots of them are super confused haha *sobs* hahaha *sobs more*

Lesson learned ^_~

I'm so sorry!

At least now we know?

C.L. Lynch (cllynchauthor) | 316 comments Yipes, Annie! Sorry to hear that!

message 65: by Annie (new)

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) | 629 comments Awww, thanks, ladies!

It's alright, though. I mean, I have no one to blame but myself, right? LOL I just feel bad for messing up cuz it gave my readers a really bad experience...

*cringes*

But it's honestly all good. They've been impossibly understanding. Plus, I'm making a look-at-my-puppy-dog-eyes-and-forgive-me-please gift for them next week haha! I like making extra gifts for those awesome possums XD

Hugs,
Ann

Amanda Siegrist (amandasiegrist) | 190 comments So, it's been a while since anyone commented in this thread and I just wanted to give an update. I recently did a preorder, like a few days ago, and there is now a nice little timer at the top that tells you how long you have until you can't upload anything anymore. It reminded me of a little time bomb waiting to go off. hahaha. Just wanted to share.

Rebecca Winkler (goodreadscomrebecca_winkler) | 3 comments I just came off of the preorder countdown, and book is released. I thought it was coolest thing.

message 68: by Marie Silk (new)

Marie Silk | 611 comments Thank you for the updates, Amanda and Rebecca! I chickened out on the pre-order this time around since I did not have the final file ready and was worried the pre-order would somehow mess up.

message 69: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Beck (kristina_beck) | 8 comments Hi there. I was just approved for pre-order but I don't see the countdown/timer you are talking about. Where do you see it?

What a surreal thing to see my first book on Amazon. Crazy!

message 70: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Beck (kristina_beck) | 8 comments Sorry. Found it. ;o)

message 71: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Siegrist (amandasiegrist) | 190 comments Congrats, Kristina! It is always so cool to see your book up there:)

And you're welcome, Marie!

T.S. Adrian (shadyia) | 11 comments Wow! I am glad saw this thread.

WARNING!!

I learned this the hard way.

Do not cancel a pre-order. If you do, the system will put you on a one-year "pre-order" ban. About 3 days from your release, you will not be able to change your M/S. Buuuuut after your release, you can change it every day. If the change is JUUUUUGE (to quote our future Twitter-in-Chief) they will inform all your loyals who bought it and they can DL the upgrade for free.

Do you know what it considered as "huge" changes?

message 74: by T.S. (new)

T.S. Adrian (shadyia) | 11 comments Good question. I think that's up to you. I made some huge changes (deleted an entire prologue that was too much back-story for the short-attention span of today's readers).

But I didn't see that as enough of a change to warrant a "get new version now!" call nor did Amazon ask me.

I hope that's an answer.

message 75: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 790 comments Should everyone make their books available for pre order or only if they have a strong following and solid email list?

message 76: by T.S. (new)

T.S. Adrian (shadyia) | 11 comments The idea, as I understand it, is to make a pre-order and try and get the word out as much as possible. When your book goes live, the rush of orders will look good.

So it's a marketing thing. Take that as you will.

message 77: by D. (new)

D. Thrush | 187 comments I made a pre-order available while I was writing the last book in a series when the first one went on sale. BUT I had the same experience as Annie. I had uploaded a partial version and when I went to upload the finished book 4 days before release date, it had locked me out. Amazon said they couldn't do anything about it. At least, in my paranoia, I had added a last line in the uploaded version that the finished book would be available on 12/30/16. When I was able to upload the final version and let Amazon know so they could contact the pre-order buyers, they said they had to review it and it could take up to 7 days to send the email. What? I will never do a pre-order again!

Hiya! *waves* I hope it's alright to say...

But preorders actually boost your rank when they're placed. Like, your ranking will increase as ppl preorder copies so while you see a rush of orders go through on your KDP dashboard when it goes live, nobody else will see it since it doesn't affect your rank all at once (unless you have a ton of ppl order all at once haha). What you will see, though, is money for all those preorders *grins*

Anyhoo, I don't even know if that made sense LOL

Group hugs,
Ann
