Jennifer Rodgers- Cabrera (jennyunscripted) | 2 comments There's a lot of comments here to go through so forgive me if this has already been addressed, but did anyone have to go back and re-read the phone call between Cadence and Taft the night before she got to the island summer seventeen? He knows the truth about Mirren and Cadence doesn't. I love how at first read it doesn't give the ending away, but once you know the ending, you go back and re-read and the truth is smacking you right in the face!

Hayley | 11 comments I really did enjoy this book! The author's writing was amazing. I am still trying to wrap my brain around this story! I read theories in part 2&3 about the cousins being dead, but if I had not read them this would have been a total shock to me because that is not where my mind went! Great book!

Amanda I'm still so sad about the ending. My heart breaks for Candace.

message 169: by Jane (new)

Jane | 1 comments I read it and I'm like "What? They're not… OMFG THEY ARE WHAT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I guess I should have paid more attention…..

Why did she freak out about the dogs so much? She complained that they were naughty and then basically felt like a murderer over the DOGS. Get over it. You murder them, but not Gat and Mirren and Johnny. They basically committed accidental suicide. I'm still trying to figure out why she had no clothes on the beach! Just so confused.

message 170: by Meimei (new)

Meimei The end wasn't that shocking but I wished so bad for another ending. The ending really hit me, made me cry, so tragic.

Toby Finke (tobyf) | 2 comments So, nobody knows if they are ghosts or hallucinations. I think they were hallucinations, but tell me what you feel about it

message 172: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (bdillardx) I predicted the ending (well, just the ghosts part, but to be fair I thought Cady was one too), but didn't actually believe in my prediction. Therefore, the ending still was a shock to me. Is it bad that I felt the worst when we found out the dogs died?

Honestly, thinking back through the book everything was there, but as a reader I dismissed a lot of the clues assuming they were just characterization or adding depth to the stories. How wrong I was - everything was there for a reason!

Probably not a re-read for me, and it definitely isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it!!

Fritzi (fritzipst) | 2 comments THIS BOOK! The ending was incredible, I wasn't expecting it and it blew me away. Beautiful book, so small but packed with feelings and emotions. The only problem, the title, why Liars?

message 177: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Holbert I was shocked by the end, I didn't even think that the characters were dead. When I got to the last part and I read the truth section I gasped and put the book down. I couldn't deal with it for like 5 minutes. I thought back and there were many clues in the story and even the title that I didn't even piece together until the end. I loved the writing, especially the story telling parts. This book is a 5/5 star rating for me.

Maggie .:*Adrian's Soulmate*:. | 3 comments I should have seen the ending coming, and my theory wasn't too far off, but I was shocked when I read the beginning of the truth part. I loved the whole book too and I loved the way it was written.

message 180: by Bernadette (new)

Bernadette Davis (godblessthenightowls) | 5 comments I was pretty sure Gat, Johnny, and Mirran died somehow in Summer 15 and they were figments of Cady's imagination. A way to cope with the tragedy. I stand by that theory. Cady was obviously not mentally stable. I don't mean anything hurtful when I say this next statement, so I apologize if it does offend anyone. People who self-harm are usually not the most stable people. As far as I am aware people who self-harm often times have a mental illness of sorts. I feel that Cady was depressed. That along with the pressure to be perfect placed on her by Mummy caused her to begin to break. Once the other liars died, she broke completely.

message 181: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (vrrbls) | 1 comments Halfway through the book I realized they were all dead. The end was still impactful though.

Maggie .:*Adrian's Soulmate*:. | 3 comments I don't think Cady self harmed.

message 183: by Tara (new)

Tara (spity368) | 6 comments I loved this book soo much. It broke my heart into a billion pieces i didn't see the ending coming at all! I fell in love with all of the liars just to find out that they had died. I freaking loved the writing style and this is my favorite contemporary book that I have ever read & honestly one of my favorite books ever. There is so much more to say about this book yet nothing more to say about it, that's how the book makes you feel.

message 184: by Ning (new)

Ning (dragonceres) | 3 comments Just finished today and I definitely shed some tears at the end! I didn't expect them to be dead! I thought that when Gat ignored Cady the summer she went to Europe, that he was dead, but then he and Johnny and Mirren showed up the next summer when Cady returned to the island. So was she just talking to ghosts? Maybe they were figments of her imagination trying to help her cope and remember. Either way, that threw me off so I was like phew, they weren't dead. Tricky tricky!

I really liked the beginning, but I did get bored in the middle when Cady was trying to regain her memories, at when she first returned to the island. I just couldn't see where the story was going, but by the time she started to remember bits by bits I was hooked. I also loved all the fairy tales that reflected their perfect Sinclair life.

The ending was shocking and I think the author's writing style just made it that much more impactful and impressive. In the end, I liked that this story also touched on the family greed that caused the Liars to do what they did, their feeling of teenage invisibility, their drunkenness when they did and everything fell apart, and how the family became tighter due to tragedy. A lot of things happened in this book and I may go back to reread it now that I know the ending to see all the clues.

Jennifer C. Caroline wrote: "For anyone who is wondering, I think they are called the liars because they are not real, and Cady and the other liars are lying to her throughout the book by thinking that they are real."

I agree with this. I think that they are called liars because their existance is a lie. Cady is lying to herself as a coping mechanism and all the things they discuss when she comes back to the island are lies.

message 191: by Jennifer C. (new)

Jennifer C. I do have one question. The fairy tale story at the end of the 4th part really bothered me. It made it seem like Cady was the witch in that story and she killed them on purpose because she was jealous. The way Cady ended up remembering it made it seem like it was truly an accident. A really stupid accident, but an accident all the same. I thought that it was going to be revealed that something happened and she arrainged it so that she was on the first floor on purpose and wanted them to die, but I really don't think that was the case. What was the point of that fairy tale? All of the other one's made sense with what was actually happening with the family. That is the only one that I keep coming back to because it just doesn't fit right.

What do you think?

message 192: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella (gabybooks) | 3 comments I honestly think that the friends were hallucinations and when they left it was as though her mind had healed and no longer needed to fabricate them any longer. As much as I loved the ending and didn't see it coming, I've read another young adult book that I won't name to avoid spoiling it and the same thing happened at the end which made it lose it's lustre for a surprise ellement, though I still appreciated it.

I think the writing is what I loved the most, the emotions, metaphors, symbolism, literary devices. This would be a great novel to teach in schools. Also, I see most people say they aren't sure why they are called liars but I think that their whole life is a lie.

message 195: by Devyn (new)

Devyn | 1 comments I really enjoyed the story, and the ending surprised me! I would definitely re-read this in the future. I thought that all of the other Liars were hallucinations, giving a darker element to the book as a whole.

message 196: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Stroh (strifford) | 1 comments It's midnight and I just finished the book and I'm sitting here in the fetal position struggling to type.

Holy cow. The ending. I literally didn't see it coming at all? I thought her "accident" happened because of something totally different! When she first describes it towards the beginning of the book she mentions being able to see the base of the island (or at least I think she says that) and when she jumps off that cliff she mentions again that she sees the base of the island, and since Mirren was sobbing for her to get down, I thought maybe she felt guilty because they did that at night and that's how she hurt herself?

Now that I have read the ending I see the clues the author left for us; the aunt wandering around at night (mourning the loss for her boy), penny always wanting cady to hang out with the littles, the liars never being around the adults, unanswered emails.

I'm not sure if the liars were hallucinations or ghosts? That is what really messes with my mind.

Unlike the others, I actually didn't mind Cady. She wasn't all there and she was a bit selfish but honestly I would be the same. When I'm in pain and I'm alone I feel sorry for myself. I thought it was refreshing to see a main character who was a bit messed up for reasons other than anxiety and stuff, and so interesting to see how her being sad and different clashes between the perfection that was the Sinclairs. I also really felt for the other liars even before I found out they were dead. Maybe not because I connected with them but Because I got to know their aspirations in life whether it was just build a Lego taxidermy fish, find love, or read the top 100 best novels... They had a future.

Reading about this prestige family really interested me because it's so different from the family's here on Kauai and how money really controls people and to me it was so interesting to see that dark side of that.

I've loved E. Lockhart since I stumbled upon The Boyfriend List in my local library, but this took my love to a whole new level. The way she wrote... Although sometimes it was fragments, sometimes that is all our mind can manage to croak out.

This novel... Wow. I can't form into words how hauntingly beautiful this is.

The only thing that slightly bothered me was how dramatic she was? When she mentioned in the beginning that her dad shot her and her heart rolled out I thought she was serious for a few moments (because she mentioned "the accident") so I had to read that a few times and all the references to her bleeding??

Also... Why were the liars called "the liars"? I know they lied some but i can't remember anything they did that was bad enough to actually be dubbed "the liar" minus the fire but she called them that way before the fire happened.

Still so uncertain about whether the liars were ghosts or hallucinations!!! AHHHH I REALLY NEED TO SLEEP hahahah
