Kirsten (kmcripn) Recently in the news, it was revealed that Canadian police have been playing Nickelback as a punishment to prisoners in their jails.

NPR ran a poll on their site asking people what song they would use as a punishment:
http://www.npr.org/2016/12/04/5041601...

What do you think?

For me it would be any rap song, that horrible car alarm song by Whitney Houston, and music by Steve Reich or John Adams.

message 4: by Franky (new)

Franky | 230 comments Almost too many to list ,but I'll start with The Macarena.

message 5: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Everything by "Lady" GagGag and Justin(e) Beaver as well as all NWA songs and Alice Cooper's rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In3sA...

I love Cooper under normal circumstances, but this is just (bleeping) mega creepy.

message 6: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 557 comments This time of year, its that insipid 'So This Is Christmas' by John Lennon and equally insipid 'Wonderful Christmas Time' by Paul McCartney.

All rap music (Sorry, that's an oxymoron. Rap is not music. It's noise with a beat.).

Anything by Julian Lennon.

message 7: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Surprised you haven't said anything about the Alice Cooper rendition, Quillracer.

message 8: by G.J. (new)

G.J. (buch-wurm) | 89 comments Frank Zappa's Bobby Brown, I detest this song with a vengeance ! And of course some of the typically British daft Christmas songs !

Never heard it, Amber.

I rarely listen to the radio these days and, when I do, it's either country or 60's oldies.

message 10: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I posted the URL so you could listen to it, Quillracer.

Absolutely! Can't stand rap or hip-hop.

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Didn't think there was any difference between rap or hip-hop anymore.

message 13: by Erin (new)

Erin | 573 comments Anything by Taylor Swift or Coldplay.

Also I really can't stand male country singers. I don't know why?!?

message 14: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 557 comments The one song that really grates on my nerves is 'Don't worry; be happy'.

message 15: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Any rap song...

Amber Martingale Lean on Me is another that can ruin my whole day.

message 17: by HornFan2 (last edited Sep 22, 2017 10:05AM) (new)

HornFan2 (hornfan2) | 235 comments Most of what's on pop radio today, it's manufactured artists, who have teams of people behind them, most of it's done on computers, twisting knobs in the studio and just garbage. One top grossing artist made 43 million, after the team around them was paid and they cleared 16 million.

message 18: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 188 comments This song could ruin my day if I didn't immediately change radio stations: "Cat's in the Cradle." Biggest guilt trip song for parents ever, especially for single parents. Of course there were things that took time away from my child - like making a living.

message 19: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale The point behind the song is that you can't be so busy MAKING a living that you FORGET TO LIVE A LIFE.

I agree Scout - single parent guilt trip!

message 21: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 188 comments Thanks for that, Sandy.

message 22: by Marie (new)

Marie Space Cowboy - Steve Miller Band.

For some reason it grates on my nerves and it is worse if it comes on while I am driving in traffic, so I will turn it off! lol

message 23: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 188 comments Mine is "American Pie" - someone in my family listened to that over and over and over one summer - I am sick to death of it. It was a single and I was the one that had to flip the song over when it reached the end. I am telling my age now - but it was a 45 vinyl record and only half the song fit on one side.

message 24: by Carolyn (last edited Jun 10, 2019 06:43PM) (new)

Carolyn | 1613 comments I hate Yellow Submarine by the Beatles. My kids used to love singing it when they were little but now when I hear it, I catch myself singing or humming it off and on all day and I know it will be stuck in my head for ages - and it's such a silly song for people to catch you singing. Grrr!

message 25: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 188 comments I agree with you, Sandy, about "American Pie."

The first single I ever bought

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep

Number one in 1969- 1970

I loved the 70's glam rock

Now I listen to 50's and 60's music and jazz !!

Emily | 142 comments what does the fox say by ylvis. why was that song ever released I hate it.

message 36: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 557 comments Christmas songs that ruin my whole day:

Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney
So This is Christmas - John Lennon.

They have got to be the most insipid songs ever written.
