Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 9905 comments So I found that I wasn't currently being challenged enough, and I wanted to see what I would have to raise my goal to be only a book or so ahead or behind so apparently I have to be at 700 books to be on track-ish. O.o

So my new goal for the day/week/month is 700.

I almost certainly won't stay at that but it's nice to know how much I could possibly aim for next year. :D

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Yikes, I can't imagine ever reading 700 books in a year! But I guess you read lots of manga and such, which you get through very quickly. I go for books that are more in the 500-1000 page range, haha.

Yup. I rarely read books that are over 500 pages so I can read most books pretty quickly. I'm also very motivated with all the challenges and trying to find spots for my A-Z Challenge books. :)

message 56: by Emily (new)

Emily Anna | 14 comments A little late with my goals, I'll need to catch up a lot on my reading. I read about 300 to 400 pages long books, so I'm trying to aim for about 100 - 150 books this year.

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Good luck, Emily!

How many books do you normally read per year?

Thank you! I usually read around 70 books.

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments So 100 isn't a huge leap then. :) How many have you read so far this year?

Emily Anna | 14 comments C.P. wrote: "So 100 isn't a huge leap then. :) How many have you read so far this year?"

I'm having a pretty slow start this year, didn't really have that much time to read. I've read 5 books but joining goodreads has made me a lot more motivated to read so I've finally started making my book list for this year.

How far are you with reading?

message 61: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Glad goodreads is helping! It's a great place to connect with other readers. Do you plan out a lot of your reading?

I think I'm at 22 books for the year. Which is good. My goal is at least 50. But I'm sure I'll surpass that. I'm just tired of focusing on numbers, so I'm focusing on reading what I really want to read. :)

I usually plan out my reading, I spend a day writing a list so when I want to read, it doesn't take me hours to find a book I'd like.

I just look for books that would interest me, hopefully with poetic writing and a lot of metaphors, though it's rare to find those.

I'm usually guilty of reading to little or too much that I forget what I read in a week. Hard for me to find that balance, so the numbers help me recall what I've read.

message 63: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 9905 comments I'm still ahead of my goal but I'm slowly falling behind. I need to find a good long manga series to be me back ahead again.

@Emily. I also have difficulty remembering what I read and what it was about. That's what I love about Goodreads and why I usually write my reviews right after I read my books. Otherwise I completely forget what happened in my previous book once I've started my next one. :)

I guess I'll need to improve my reviews, I just write them in a minute, forgetting that I would need to read them one day.

I rarely read my reviews again after I've written them. But I have gotten a lot better at writing my reviews since I joined Goodreads. Before I never thought about what I read. I'd skip parts I didn't like or didn't find interesting and would speed through books like no tomorrow. I still read pretty fast but I now take my time and really try to understand what I'm reading and enjoy it. Before I could barely write a sentence about what I read now I'm up to several paragraphs. :)

I also used to skip the uninteresting parts especially if I knew it would take more than a day to read the book. Though I've learned to stick through even the most boring parts. But I still try to read a book in one day no matter how long it is, a little part of me dies inside if it takes 2 or more days to read a book.

I agree with the trying to stick through the boring parts. I love action and romance so when the author is setting the scene or if the author is overly descriptive I die a little inside. I think that's one of my main faults as a writer. I can't describe the scene and therefore no one knows what's going on. lol.

I don't mind taking a while to read a book but it has to be one of the only books I'm reading at the time or I can't have gotten more than 10% or I've completely forgotten what happened and have to start over. :/

When I write I don't describe the scenes enough but the characters clothes, walking, etc. I describe too much. I guess I'll need to edit a lot.

I have the same issue. lol. :)

message 70: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Goodreads is definitely a great way to keep track of what you've read.

I like making lists as well. This year I set my goal of ten books, so that helps. I also have some favorite authors and a bunch of books I already own, so I include those on a seperate list. It's rarely hard for me to pick a new book.

Goodness, if I tried to finish all my books in one day I would go crazy! I used to do that more so, but I gave it up. Especially since I read quite a few long books. Reading 500+ pages in a day isn't always possible.

I'm trying to find a good balance with my writing. I love description, but it has to be done right. I'm not sure I pull it off.

Emily, have you read All the Light We Cannot See? That's a great one as far as writing goes, I think.

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4614 comments I absolutely love Goodreads! It has helped me meet so many new people and read more books. The challenges also help me stay on track and motivated. Plus, I've found books I would not otherwise have read or heard about.

message 72: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackiegirl02) | 4614 comments In an ideal world, I would love to read a book a day, but if I do I start feeling a bit rushed so I try and aim for a day and a half on breaks or a week during school.

Reality gets in the way of reading way too much lol. Sometimes I get more read than other times. And sometimes (like last night) I stay up way too late reading... The challenges sure help. :)

No, I have not. I looked it up and it isn't really the type I'm used to reading, but a little change would be good. For now, I put it in the back of my list for summer reading. Thanks for the suggestion!

message 78: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Well if you get to it I hope you enjoy! It was a great one. What do you like to read most?

message 79: by Emily (new)

Emily Anna | 14 comments C.P. wrote: "Well if you get to it I hope you enjoy! It was a great one. What do you like to read most?"

I'm recently into YA fiction and as usual, fantasy, trying to find cheerful books, getting tired of every book I read being depressive, probably because it's spring outside.

message 80: by Kylara (new)

Kylara Jensen | 437 comments My goals this year are to read a bunch of my owned books. I have a bunch of books, I am keeping just to read and then get rid of. I want to cut down on the amount of books I own, so I really want to read more owned books.

I also want to get my To-Read list down under 500. I went through it and deleted a bunch of poorly rated books. I also started at the beginning and have started reading the early books on my list. I'm definitely going through the fiction faster than the NF so I'd like to read more NF.

I also have several series I've been meaning to re-read but Idk if I'll get to that this year.

message 81: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Good luck, Kylara! I am wanting to read more of the books I own as well, that way I can weed out the ones that I don't want to keep. I already have a little stack I need to get rid of.

message 82: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 9905 comments I'm currently 12 books behind schedule and I'm not sure when I'll have time to read enough manga to get me ahead again. I really need to stop joining so many challenges. :/

message 83: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments I guess that would be an issue, since a lot of challenges in the groups don't use manga. Hope you can catch up though! Maybe you can take a month off from challenges or something.

I've tried to do that for the past three months but the challenges all look so good. I'm a self sabotager it seems. :(

I'll just have to make some time. :/

~Book Reviews by Trish~ (bookreviewsbytrish) I'm also behind don't be too hard on yourself :)

message 86: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments What is your reading goal, Trish?

Maybe you could do solo on the challenges or something, Bookbuyer. Then there wouldn't be as much pressure since you don't have a team.

message 89: by Kylara (new)

Kylara Jensen | 437 comments Eh, I'm doing ok. I'm keeping my to read list under 600, but I have been adding books as fast as I can read them.

And I haven't been able to read my owned books at all. Just library books.

But I am reading so yay.

Pretty good. I dropped down from 500 to 450 so I'm under 10 books behind. I'm still hoping to get to 500 but I'm not sure I'll be able to. :/

message 96: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 8238 comments Yeah. You'll probably have to just go to manga/graphic novels for a while to get there.

But this month is the only challenge where they count so I don't think I'll have much time. I guess I can try for November/December. They still won't count but I won't be on a team and therefore my team won't be counting on me. :/

message 98: by Felicia (new)

Felicia | 15003 comments I'm at 70/100. One book ahead of schedule. But TOD is proving to be a pain. I was having a lot of trouble getting through the beginning. So it's taken me longer to finish then I anticipated. Still one book ahead though. So I'm still doing good.

Felicia | 15003 comments It's picking up. So I've been reading for a few hours now. Without interruption. Which before I found myself looking for other things to do while attempting to read. So it's going good, I think. (:
