Old Books, New Readers discussion

Hey all.

I was thinking of keeping this catch up challenge going as a yearly thing.

Would anyone be interested in doing a catch up challenge next year? Only the books read before December 31st would be eligible. (The last one would be Anna Karenina)

For people who have read most of the club books I could consult with other mods in coming up with an alternate challenge. What do you all think?

I definitely like the idea of a 2017 Catch Up Challenge. I, for one, am still behind in the numerous prior BOTM selections. I have already read many of them, but in most cases it is long after my first read. My experience is that a second read always equips the reader with both new eyes and new perspectives.

With an earlier start, the 2017 Catch Up Challenge should be for at least 12 books.

Sounds good. I'm still way behind on the group reads.

Yes, I think I want to continue. Did not get to all do mine - I take my time with it because I want to read other books than classics, too!

Hey Jon,

I like your suggestion, I had thought about upping the number but because the group read some chunksters (i.e. Moby Dick) I thought I'd stick to 10 so that if someone wants to take that on they don't have to do it in a month to stay on schedule. They can just read it and enjoy it with a month or two to spare. :)

I'm still giving away 3 prizes next year too.

I would like to participate. I have been reading the rules from last year and if I understand them correctly, I can go through the old group reads through the end of 2016 and select, read and comment on these books. Do I have to decide which books up front or can I choose one book at a time? I was thinking of starting with the first book, skipping any book I have read and recorded on Goodreads, though there may be books I skip because they just cannot hold my attention.

Hey Brit that's pretty much the idea. You can pick books as you go along no need to pick a fixed list at the start of the year. :)

Last year we started doing themes and we got all kinds of interesting recommendations. I'm excited to see what our new team of mods comes up with this year. :)

I would like to join in with this challenge as well - as a newbie member of this group I know I've missed some good books and would like a catch up.

I just joined the Old Books New Readers group today and would love to be part of the 2017 Catch Up Challenge. It would be a great New Years Resolution!

I, too, would like to join the catch-up group.

I'd love to do this challenge again. I think I'm now at the point where I've read all the BOTM except one, but many of them were read years ago and I'd love to read them again. :)
