Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Matilda is a children's novel by British writer Roald Dahl. It was published in 1988 by Jonathan Cape in London, with 232 pages and illustrations by Quentin Blake.
In 2012 Matilda was ranked number 30 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal.

Deadly Corvid I'll join too. Love Roald Dahl, have been meaning to read this one for a while.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Would be my first book by Roald Dahl :)

martin eden How is that possible Gorab?! You must read his short stories for adults! They are all little jewels!

Horus I will read it

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments @martin - relatively new to reading and have read very less authors... GR is helping a lot to expand the horizon :)

martin eden Gorab wrote: "@martin - relatively new to reading and have read very less authors... GR is helping a lot to expand the horizon :)"

I completely agree about GR!
I'm eager to know what you think of Mathilda and Roald Dahl's writing style. (after Matilda, you should have a shot at his short stories like Lamb to the slaughter or Skin (my favorite one I think).

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Sure thing. Matilda will be the initiation into the world of Dahl.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Great book to start 2017 with.

Snehil Santhalia This will be my first Group Activity here on Goodreads. Hope that I enjoy it. (BTW I just joined this group)

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Have started it and within two Chapters am in love with it already!
Among that list of classics by Dickens and others that Matilda read, have read only a couple max.
And this lovely book sort of inspires to read much more :)

Monica Shastri (nicafictionalfandoms) | 2 comments Would be my first book of Dahl. Purchased this book today.
Excited to Read.
Have always wanted to read his short stories.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I had a 6 hr boring bus journey, therefore I decided to read a little. I got away with the flow, and completed the book. Sorry guys, but it was really unputdownable :)

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Manasa, can I dissapear now? ;)
Just kidding, I won't.

(view spoiler)

Horus Is there anyone reading the illustrated edition?

martin eden I read the illustrated edition. You cannot seperate Roald Dahl from Quentin Blake I think. They were close friends and they managed to work in harmony.

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments @Arpit: glad to see how you utilised that boring journey :)

This is a fast paced fun read and at 25% enjoying it very much.
Though kids might get some ideas to get back at their parents :P
And may be that's the reason his father insists to watch TV instead ;)

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Nishith wrote: "Is there anyone reading the illustrated edition?"
Me!
Yeah that adds to the fun factor :)

Sinéad, somehow there weren't any Dahl or Tolkien in my childhood like in yours or Matilda's, but I'm making for it now, reading a lot of children's book :)
It's my first Dahl, and definately would not be the last.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I didnt like the way Matilda's took revenge with her parents. They were rude, but not cruel. What do you guys think?

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't worry Matilda, even we, adults, don't understand many things Hemingway uncle says. It's perfectly normal :)

martin eden @Arpit: I think it was just meant to be funny. And Roald Dahl loves to be cruel with cruel people. He is showing what we could do if we had magical super powers... :P

I was planning to suggest it to my son but then stopped myself exactly for the above mentioned reason. At 50% and it is going smoothly.

My daughter read it (she is 10 years old) and she loved it. Roald Dahl is one of her favorite writers.

Oh! Really? That is good. Maybe I will suggest it to mine though frankly speaking he does not require Dahl's help in getting his point to me.

Horus I am halfway through... And enjoying it :)

When I was in 1st standard, I had an English teacher just like Trunchbull. Everyone was afraid of her. I remember a bad experience with her. During final examination, I forgot to write roll no. On the answer sheet. She called me and slapped me in front of all the students in class, for not writing the Roll no. She was the only awful teacher I have ever come across to. Rest of all teachers were like Miss Honey.

Does any one have such experiences during school life?

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Ha ha ha :D
I forget many things in life but never forgot to write roll number :P
Sorry to say this, but I think you deserved it :D :D

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments That conversation between Ms Honey and the parents! :D :D :D

Horus Gorab wrote: "That conversation between Ms Honey and the parents! :D :D :D"

Books and looks :D

Horus Gorab wrote: "Ha ha ha :D

I was in 1st standard and instead of writing it on 2 places given on the answer sheet, I wrote it once. So it was not a big issue but as I said she was a Trunchbull type of teacher and she enjoyed scolding students over petty issues. :p

Rebecca | 89 comments I am waiting to see the Matilda vs Trunchbull match...

One of my teachers was like that. Students were so afraid that they could piss themselves! That teacher had to drive in front of our house. And one day, my mother decided to stop him, to talk to him. And she told him: "if you ever touch one of my kids, I break you!" (she was holding a broomstick!). He never touched us, but he was still frightening!

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3110 comments Really??
Wow! Should have been smooth for you!
Had it been my parents, they would have said - "If ever he's upto any mischief, break him!"

Any parents approach you for special instructions regarding their kids?

Ha ha....Gorab, same with my parents!!

Funny it was, and I didn't take it seriously too, but as Gorab said, it might give kids ideas :P

My mother was a lioness!
As for the parents I have to face today, they are quite cool!

I think it was one of Dahl's goals!
