Someone in my Facebook world posted her status a few weeks ago: "If you are a feminist, what kind of feminist are you, and why?" Like many of her commenters, my first thought was... "There are different kinds?"
Then, at work in my HR department, I was tasked to lead a new project for my company: To build an Employee Resource Group initiative that allowed for minority voices to be heard and strengthened in the workplace.
Wow.
So, I set my reading goal for 2017: To only read books written by women and/or minority authors.
I can't tell you how excited I am.
Last year, I set my goal at 40 - which is actually quite a bit lower than goals met in years past. Despite the underwhelming number chosen, I failed to reach my goal.
So, for 2017, I set my goal lower: only 30 to strive for. I hope I surpass it with flying colors.
Here are my "to-reads" so far for the year. Please, please - please! Recommend any others.
Thank you, Heather
"in Search of Our Mothers' Gardens" by Alice Walker "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin "Native Son" by Richard Wright 'Mules and Men" by Zora Neale Hurston "Jane Eyre" "Little Women" Louisa Mae Alcott To Kill A Mockingbird (this is a perennial re-read, actually - but why break with a great tradition?) Yes, Please - by Amy Poehler The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo - by Amy Shumer The Gilded Years by Karin Tanabe Ghandi's "Quit India" speech Any and all MLK, Jr. The Color Purple (because I am so much loving Alice Walker) "Cane" by Jean Toomer More Flannery O'Connor than I have in the past... "Vindication of the Rights of Women" by Mary Wollstonecraft
This is a very preliminary list- I look forward to all the feedback!!
