I enjoyed it for being dark and accurate in it's portrayal of the hard lives these women would have lived
I also like the way Nalo has mixed real historical figures into each of the stories.
Mackandal was a real figure in Saint Domingue/Haiti history.
I don't think the real one could turn into animals though ;-)
Obviously these links to the real people are likely to contain spoilers for the book.
François Mackandal
Jeanne Duvall was Charles Baudelaire's mistress.
Jeanne Duvall
Thais may have been a real person. It is spoilery to say who she is/may have been.

Oops. Thanks I corrected it now.
I linked to the wrong one. Easy mistake with the name and life being similar. Even Wikipedia had it wrong and had it attributed as being her in the "In Arts and Literature" section.

They are the same now.
I had followed the wrong link initially and posted that by mistake.

The matter of fact description of terrible cruelties almost broke my heart. As far as I know this is historically accurate.
I "spoiled myself" by looking at Haitis history and I am already really sad about what is going to happen.
So I can't say I am enjoying this book, but it gets me thinking.
